About this Mardin vlog:
I flew down to southeastern Türkiye to visit Mardin. I knew it was very different from the western part of the country. It was amazing to stand in Mesopotamia and see the cradle of civilization. I had great travel adventures exploring the ancient streets, looking for garbage donkeys. Along the way, I also saw:
- Mardin Castle
- Zinciriye Medresesi
- Syrian border
- Mardin Old Town
- Mardin market
I ate some local Mardin cuisine also. I stopped at Sultan Sofrasi for Mardin Tabağı and Harirê. I also went to an Assyrian wine house and drank Assyrian wine made from Boğazkere grapes. The next day, I went to a restaurant for some more local Middle Eastern food and ordered the traditional breakfast, or Serpme Kahvaltısı. The amount of food that came out was crazy!
About the culture of Mardin, Türkiye:
Mardin, a historical city in southeastern Türkiye, stands as a striking example of a cultural melting pot. About Mardin’s history:
Mardin, a city steeped in history in southeastern Turkey, has been a crossroads of civilizations for millennia. The city's history can be traced back to the Assyrian Empire, around 4000 BCE, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in the world. Over the centuries, Mardin was ruled by various empires including the Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Seljuks, and Ottomans. Each left their mark on the city, contributing to its architectural, linguistic, and cultural diversity.
Mardin is particularly known for its distinctive Artuqid architecture, dating from the 12th to 15th centuries, which blends Islamic and Christian influences. Its Old City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site candidate, famed for its sandstone buildings, narrow alleys, and ancient religious structures, including the impressive Deyrulzafaran Monastery and the Great Mosque.

The history of Mardin is so great that Kurds and Turks live here together, there are also Arabs who have been living for over 100 years and we really get along well with each other... I am grateful for you sharing this beautiful video with us, it is very enjoyable to watch😊

Thank you for your presentation. It would have been great if you had included the nightlife in your video shoot for Mardin. Because the city has a very different atmosphere at night, I'm sure you would have liked it too.

Nice vlog. Love Mardin's eclectic mix. Lemon, citrus hand colognes are very old refreshments of hosptality. They are not meant for sanitizing, but at the same time, they do sanitize, since they have already have alcohol in them. People put the lemon cologne in their faces and for a quick refreshing feeling. This tradition is much less in big cities now. Citrus groves 🍋🍊 are found in all Mediterranean basin. That scent is nothing to do with Middle East. It is more like Mediterranean scent. Türkiye is a Eurasian country, NOT Middle Eastern. But close to Syrian and Iraqi borders, some cities and settlements have more culture mix from those countries.
Mardin was the first place I’d experienced that so I didn’t know, but yeah, later when I went to Antalya they used it also.
I like and following your vlogs. Yiu share nice videos. I wanna clarify that eau de cologne has came from Europe, city of Cologne in Germany. In other words, this is Kölnish Wasser in German. Its origin has dated back to the 17th century in Europe. At first this was used as antiseptic. Eau de cologne has been introduced and presented by Jane Marie Farina to the Sultan Abdulhamid II in Istanbul in 1882. In reality this fresh smell is a European tradition at the beginning and has been adopted to Turkish culture and been admired by Turkish people for years. For the time being various types of eau de cologne (lemon, mandarin, cherry blossom, lavender,tobacco,etc.) have been produced in Turkey and consumed by Turkish people. We pour out this to our guests' hands at our homes, restaurants or elsewhere to show our hospitality. We also get used to use this for sanitary purposes, also during pandemi times it has became very important for maintaning personal hygiene. Additionally it smells so nice and indispensable cosmetic product for the centuries.

Citrus groves smell heavenly, phenomenally intoxicating. I used to walk to school through lemon and orange groves. It is impossible to capture that smell in eau de cologne but even a hint of it takes me back to the orange/lemon groves of my childhood. It is kind of olfactory semiotics: it is not the kolonya itself, it is where it takes me mentally that I love.

Yes, the kurdish hospitality is on a different level. Kurdish people are amazing. Mardins majority is kurdish. Turks do not live in Mardin, the few Turks in Mardin working in Mardin as teacher, imam or belonging to the military

Another great video TLOT. I have never been in Mardin but always heard great things about it. The Mardin cuisine is very famous. Your excitement about the donkeys is so cute 😊 Glad you saw them. The hand cologne reminded of me my childhood memories so thank you for that. There is nothing like Turkish breakfast either. So I searched and I found a few places in Virginia where I live that solely serve Turkish breakfast.

Fun fact: Isa is the Muslim pronunciation of the name of the Jesus. You could practically interpret the name of the school as "Sultan Jesus School". Isa is also a common name used by people of the region.

I wish you had gone to Midyat while you were in Mardin..it is 1 hour far away from Mardin..and incredible abbeys are there. And they are all protected..

I am very glad that you came to our country. 🇹🇷 Cologne is the name of that lemony thing. I can say that we have it outside, in restaurants, in our homes. In our country, it is served after meals or to guests and is often seen at celebrations. It's not because you're dirty, don't get me wrong, it's used to make it smell better or instead of wet wipes after a meal.

What they offered you is lemon cologne it is tradition it’s just to freshen up also for sanitation. What a great idea the restaurants here in London should adopt the idea.

İsn't it basically like wet wipes, without the single-use wipes? What bothers me about it beyond its strong scent us when they pour it into your hands lots of it drips all over. It's a bleaching agent, no? Lemon alcohol? So having it drip onto the carpets or your jeans or the couch you're sitting on--that frustrates me. Luckily they don't do it as much as they used to 30 years ago...

They gave you kolanyagi all the time because it is tradition. It has a history. When Spanish flue spread, kolanyagi used as sanitizer in 1927. It has 80 percent alcohol. So people start using it. Then it become a tradition since 1927. Today when people visit relatives or friends in their house first think they give you this kolanyagi. When covid 19 hit I realize that what a great tradition it became.

Yeah it was!
Lemon cologne is a very old tradition. Its smell may bother you now, but now softer scents are preferred. But in the past, when hygiene was not much known, this tradition kept everyone healthy. When Covid broke out, everyone was washing their hands with alcohol, and this is its old vermilion scented version. I hope you can understand their logic, especially for travelers. Of course, this has now turned into a method of attracting tourists :) Traditional Turkish breakfast is not made alone, it is made with all your family and friends, and that crowded conversation makes what you eat more delicious. You can snack and taste something in between the conversation. When you are alone, it turns into breakfast and the abundance of options can bore you.
The scent didn’t bother me at all! I liked it! I also liked the breakfast!
Martin was part of Syria. Boarders moved making Martin part of Turkey. Many many Christians emmigrated to Canada before the border change. Some of my relatives were from there when it was part of Syria

That is lemon cologne. Offering it to guests, whether in a restaurant, or barber shop or to people who visit your home, is a very Turkish tradition. It is meant to refresh people. You'll come across it all over Türkiye. There are other scents as well, but lemon is the most common and traditional one. It is 80 degrees, so it does also serve as a good hand disinfectant.
That was the first place I encountered it but then I saw it a lot more in the southern areas and along the Mediterranean later on
In fact, we call the liquid they pour into your hands "Cologne" and it is an aroma that is mostly used to entertain guests, of course you can use it for different purposes, but people don't usually use it to clean, so it's not like French perfume.

what they put on your hands is high concentration cologne. It is derived from a german fragrance called 4711. It has been used for around 100+ years in Turkey. The smell is not a middle eastern smell, it is a 4711, early cologne smell - which has been carried on .

that cologne was life savior for Turks during covid lol as most of them have 80 degree alcohol in it that kills the virus..it's a long time tradition like when you're a guest somewhere, you are offered lemon cologne so that you clean your hands from all the dirt and germs coming from outside.. though now it's only offered at restaurants..
That citrusy hand sanitizer is "Limon kolonyasi"; you can't escape it in Turkey.

I snorted multiple times at the donkey obsession, and it was not something I had ever heard of. I think the horses you saw before were maybe "taxis" for tourists who may not want to hike up to the top? maybe? They have horse-drawn carriages over here for Efes for people who want to park at the bottom of the city of Efes, take the horses to the top (from the outside of efes) and walk on down back to their cars. I'm guessng here about the horses you saw. They were either for tourists or maybe even wedding or other ceremonial carry-the-guest-of-honor type of deal. Sorry you got scammed with the breakfast. They have traditional breakfasts with that many types of cheese/jams/olives at single serving sizes. When I saw you got the eggs (sahanda yumurta) with the eggs with sauce (menemen) and knowing each one of those are add-ons to a regular single breakfast, I rolled my eyes in dismay. Also heard English in that breakfast scene. Lots of tourists over there? I've only ever been as far east as Artvin and that's at the most northen tip, havent been south of there. The donkeys made this the most entertaining video of yours I've seen so far!
The donkey thing was kind of a joke at first but I only had a day and a half in Mardin and spent so much time looking for one that the whole video depended on me finding one hahaha

Donkeys are used to collect rubbish in the streets that are to tiny for cars. Donkeys and horses are not used as taxis. Horses are decorated for tourists who pay to take photographs with them.

I recommend you to go to Urfa, the city of the prophets, and to see Erzurum, the capital of the Turks, the Seljuk state.

your map at beginning is wrong. northern cyprus isnt part of türkiye. its an independent country
Yeah I said this to previous comments too, but I to document the times I use the preferred map of the country I’m in. Borders always change and my videos can’t represent everything fairly. When I do India or China the maps I use will contradict each other etc.

Everyone know that Mardin is a kurdish city. In the ottoman era - Mardin was a very important kurdish City beside Diyarbakir and Erbil.
The few Turks WHO are living in Mardin assimilated Assyrians or teacher, solider or imams - their origine are from the west or central Anatolia. For thousend years ago - Mardin was also famous for their Armenians and Assyrians.

Is it safe? I know its close to the border with syria
I thought the city itself was very safe. The people were friendly and accepting. I was only there for two days though but I didn’t have any problems.
