Talking strictly about commun sense, why wouldn't a 14 year old have s3x with his 16 year old boyfriend?! The suposed age gap was on porpuse because everybody knows how boys tend to be more immature than girls! If they love each other and no one is forcing the other person, why not? I think it's early because they might not be ready for that but to think that they are "children" and that they don't think about "those things" it's extremely naive! Better to do it within a relationship than to get drunk and do it with a random person and get pregnant or get AIDS, Hepatitis, gonorrhea, sifilis, etc. "
People under 18 can't drink alcohol. It was under 16 until some years ago (probably 20 years?), and it's illegal to sell alcohol to people visibily drunk, to someone that apears to have some mental desorder or some intellectual handicap.
It's legal to change s3x but people need to go through psychotherapy for quite sometime to find if they don't have some issues (like trauma or some mental disorders) and even after that, they need to stay in psychotherapy for I think it's 3 years, regardless of their age, to guarantee that it's what they really want.

Casino Estoril is not only the biggest in Portugal, but also in Europe and was home of axis and allies espionage during the WWII, inspiring the James Bond saga
Yes! The episode that might probably have inspired Ian Fleming happened in the Estoril Casino indeed. You can read about it in "Spy, Counter Spy" by Dusko Popov, the British agent known as "tricycle". The episode was witnessed by Ian Fleming himself, that was the designated supervisor for a certain operation.
There's a few misconceptions, the age of consent although technically correct, being 14 and 15 in most contries of EU, Portugal's law states clearly "there can be no abuse of inexperience", this leaves room for interpretation. Trust me , don't come to Portugal thinking this is a sex tourism paradise, get involved with a 14 year old as an adult, only pursuing sexual gratification, and you'll get a few years behind bars. But France for example, has the age of consent at 15 without restrictions. So, don't think Portugal is like that, you try to only have sexual relationships with a 14 year old here, you will most likely get arrested for abusing his/her inexperience. Even if you date (no abuse of inexperience) its obviously highly frowned upon. For context, here is the law that states the age of consent (Use google translator at your own risk): Artigo 173.º do CP: 1 - Quem, sendo maior, praticar ato sexual de relevo com menor entre 14 e 16 anos, ou levar a que ele seja praticado por este com outrem, abusando da sua inexperiência, é punido com pena de prisão até 2 anos. There are exceptions, for example if the ADULT is a legal guardian, tutor, teacher, (anyone who has clear hierarchical power) then THE LEGAL AGE of the counterpart IS 18! Edit: If people want confirmation that a 38 year old can date a 16 year old, just search on google for the legal court decision document "RP20200422573/18.1JAAVR.P1" and the case absolves the accused of child po.... because the photos shared of her naked were in the context of a romantic relationship. On another case, "1779/13.5JAPRT.P1", a young man of 22/23, admits to having two relationships with two different girls of 14, without it being considered a crime, as it was in the context of a "gratifying emotional relationship" . Also, the drugs laws was almost correct, you can't carry 10 individual doses of any drug, you can carry a limit corresponding to 10 days of consumption, there's a table, its for example 2.5g of thc (usually corresponding to 25g of cannabis at 10% of THC , usually) , 1g of coke, 1g of MDMA, 1 tab of LSD, etc.) . If you respect these limits, you're off the hook with at most a fine of 150€ . But you can carry any amount as long as you can prove is for auto-consumption but this is more difficult and bureaucratic and time consuming (This law is pretty new, November of 2023). So yes, you can carry any amount now, as long as you can prove it is for auto-consumption for 10 days . Good luck trying that if caught with 100g of coke or weed.
@astos5533 No its not, you're absolutely wrong. There's technically no age gap limit. The age of consent IS 14, but read the law: Artigo 173.º do CP: 1 - Quem, sendo maior, praticar ato sexual de relevo com menor entre 14 e 16 anos, ou levar a que ele seja praticado por este com outrem, abusando da sua inexperiência, é punido com pena de prisão até 2 anos. This means anyone over 18 can have sexual relationships with a 14 year old (Except tutors, legal guardians or anyone with ascending power), BUT CANNOT abuse his/her's inexperience. So, its not illegal unless the adult abuses the inexperience, which is almost always the case. You are so wrong that this not even apply if one got 17 and the other is 14, its not a crime AT ALL in this situation, no matter if there's proven abuse of inexperience.
@@brunobastos5533 it's not illegal if the parents consent to the relationship. I know a case that blowed my mind completely but is legal because of the parents 🤮

@@trailoffiends This! Unless making some mess of it... anyone can be drunk (any time of day) that police wont bother. I know this because I have a couple of friends that are cops.
Being visibly drunk is part of portuguese culture. It's how we ascertain our absolute drinking dominance over every european country west of Poland. In case of dire need, Portugal can represent the EU in a drinking game, and Ti Manel will outdrink even the most experienced slav. The matabixo in the morning since he was 14 and started plowing the fields, a moonshine "remedy" whenever he has a nose drip, a 375mL wine bottle each main meal, a digestive at the end of the meal, a "scent" in each of the minimum 4 daily espressos, the whiskey or rum added onto his chocolate mousse, and the nightcap to sleep better... Sometimes I wonder if the asian martial style of the drunken fist wasnt simply inspired by portuguese sailors fighting in their normal averagely drunk state. PS: is also a precious source of comedic content and memes.
We won the war on drugs more than twenty years ago and that was wonderful, but I think we are currently starting to lose. Lately we have seen some consumption on the streets that we didn't see 5 years ago, I don't know if it was because of the pandemic, but it is getting worrying.
They changed the law recently, it used to be ilegal to consume in the streets. These Ocos of the PS are making some pretty irresponsably laws in these last years
As a portuguese person, I never saw any cop care about someone drinking in public here. Or looking extremely drunk. Its one of those laws that probably are there but are never enforced. People just laugh at the sight of a funny drunken fella, even cops
In the heavy drunken state, you can get a fine. Usually its not a problem, but if cop doesn't like you and you're way too drunk, you can and will get fined. Im also portuguese and while it hasn't happened to me, it happened several times to some friends (while i was around)
Which is the proper response. Drug use and addiction are medical, not criminal probems. Treating them as such is much more effect that throwing people in jail. It is also less expensive.
In the US, Portland tried that and it made everything worse. I wonder (sincerely!) why it worked in Portugal and not in Portland? (Again--not being sarcastic)

Regarding the being drunk on the street situation, I must say, I highly doubt you get in trouble for doing that, since I was a kid I always saw that kind of stuff and never heard of anyone having problems with the law because of that. Note: I am from a small/interior city, that may affect my experience
Basically this law is for police to have something to pick up if you are drunk and you mess up and get violent. Before, hooligans were coming getting drunk and break everithing and police couldn’t do more than free them after.
@@vitorcandido100 but destroying private or public property is a different crime. Just because you are drunk and on the street, doesn't mean you're gonna disturb someone, destroy something, etc
You're right. Not only in small towns, but in the big cities too. Unless the drunk guy is causing a scene, or disturbing other people, or being a nuissance of some kind, nobody cares. The authorities won't do anything if you are just being a happy drunkard. As it should be, in my opinion. If you are not disturbing and not harming anyone, I don't see why the police should intervene. Like other laws, as throwing garbage or cigarrette buts to the ground, spit on the street, cross a road not on a crosswalk or at a red signal... All that is not allowed and we see people doing it every day. As well as leaving your dog's poop on the street!!!! This one is very anoying.
Yeah I was going to say, as someone who grew up on bigger cities: you wont be having any trouble for being drunk on the street as long as you arent doing anything else that is a crime. If you dont damage property or be too loud then the police arent going to bother you at all and you could be literally stumbling down the street in from of them 😂
@@renatopereira2315Not only that but, in fact, if you're drunk and unable to reach home, you can flag down a police car, politely, and ask to be taken home, in small towns, always work (i was told that there was an actual law about it but i've never found it).
Wild camping is not allowed in Portugal… don’t confuse between wild camping and parking RV’s. You can park an RV in any street and sleep inside as you can in any other vehicle but you can’t use any more public space other than the RV itself. So you can’t put chairs, tables barbecues etc outside your RV. You can only do that in camping parks… also you can’t use camping tents…
Our law about RVs is completely stupid. You cannot park and sleep inside a RV in any Natura 2000 areas from 10pm to 7am. But if it's not a RV or similar then there's no problem. More, in Natura 2000 parking lots it's almost impossible to park a RV even if you just want to go to a restaurant or take a walk. Those parking lots have forbidding signs exclusively for RVs. Regarding the "14 is the age of consent", it's must be said there is an important caveat: the age of the other person. 14 is only the age of consent if the other person is underage (i.e. 17 or younger). So, a 14 year old may consent into sex with someone under 18. But if the other person is legally an adult (i.e. 18 or older), then being 16 is required for the consent to be admissible. It's still lower then 18, but it's not as low as 14.

@@rubiskelterI'm sorry, but I don't see how that contradicts what I said. The statute you just quotes says, *in line with what I said,* that an adult (i.e. 18 or older) having sex with someone between 14 and 16 is punishable with up to 2 years of prison - which means the adult *cannot invoke* the fact that the minor gave his/he *consent.* Which means the age of consent is not 14 if the other person is an adult. Slight correction about drinking in public: IIRC, you can drink anywhere you want, but consumption is curtailed at the supply level, much like in other countries in Europe; at least here in Lisbon, commercial establishments face a series of restrictions related to sale of drinks, especially in glass containers, for hygiene and safety reasons, but if you bring your own with you and don’t create a mess, you should be fine (you might, however, inadvertently cause trouble to the nearby establishments by raising suspicions they’re selling past the legal time, so doing it as far away as possible from those is advisable).
It may be in "some law", but you hardly see little girls getting married at 14 years old. For us in Portugal it is not normal behaviour. Women here usually marry at around 20 to 30 years of age. As for what the kids do after class in their spare time, I guess, everyone will experiment "kissing" at a very early age. This happens in ANY country in the world, including the USA. But one interesting thing I do notice, because I have doctors in the family, is that teenage pregnancy is not a problem here or out of control , as in some other countries. Kids here are very well educated in all things.

No one is getting married at 14 . It's just not happening. I should note that it's the same in several US states too. And most of the EU... 14 is not a child. I joined the military at 16. Had an apartment and driver's license at 14, worked and no issues.

The age of consent is 14, but it is not as straightforward as it was explained. It depends on the parents to have a word as well, and the age difference can't be bigger than 3 years if you have a girlfriend till you are 18, etc. so basically, if you are 21 you can't have a girlfriend with 17 in theory of you are having sexual relations.
And one more thing you didn't say and I believe it's at least curious : The maximum prison sentence is 25 years and with good behavior it can be reduced by half...
its kinda expected that people will be reformed after a quarter of a century, instantly do something minor and get put back, or get dealt with by other inmates. from memory there isn't much of a history with maximum sentence criminals being let out and causing trouble
The age of consent grants adolescents the opportunity to take decisions concerning their body, their health and their beliefs. It is specially important from a medical point of view. For example, in cases where the parents might oppose a life-saving treatment because it is against their religious beliefs. If the person is 14 or older they are legally entitled to decide for themselves in this situation.
It's like in Canada, it used to be 14 and they changed it to 16 in 2008 but with conditions, basically the same as in Portugal, depends on the age of both parties involved and circumstances

Excellent video! Very useful for most of us who made Portugal our home. I was shocked by the age of consent part but it is not exactly like that. I don't think a boy or girl aged 14 know what they are doing. We were wild camping in Alentejo and the police came and told us we couldn't stay... Then one of the ladies told them we were only there for a few hours and we would all sleep inside our cars (Not RVs and she had a large van). Coolio, they said and left. Hi Dave. Even if for entertaining purposes only, I think talking about the law should take a bit more care than a simple google search. Age of consent in Portugal is indeed 14, but someone of legal age (18 or older) can commit a crime if having relevant sexual acts with a minor under 16. No legal problem with a 17 yo having relevant sexual acts with a 14 yo tough. The consumption of drugs is still prohibited... although it's not a crime it's still a "contra ordenação" (administrative offense) - just like driving over the speed limits, for instance. Also, fully wrong about alcohol consumption. There's no law what so ever against being publicly inebriated or publicly consuming alcohol at whatever hour of the day... I enjoy your videos whenever I spot them in my feed. Abraço
Just adding a bit of context/nuance regarding the drug thing, there is a very blur line regarding this and how was described on the video is half-right. To clarify, the act of selling, TRANSPORTING is still A CRIME, no if you've "10 doses of X drug" on you, no you will get it confiscate and pay a fine bare minimum so THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT to be known since people think "you can have with you to consume" so yeah if its mine i'm fine.... DON'T. What is true on this law is solely the fact if you're caught CONSUMING, you will not be commiting a crime. Thats all. This reason for this law was to make people who were addicted to not be afraid of seeking help because it could lead to legal issues but ever since if you got too deep "in the hole" you can seek help without feel like a criminal. TLDR: Sell, Transporting = still a crime, Act of Consuming = not a crime.
One thing to add about the prostitution thing... It's illegal to do it in certain locations, such as near a school or some other place where children might be.
they exist but aren't common, mosquitoes and flies are as much of a pest as anywhere else, and the worst bugs you'll get are centipedes and wasps, nothing that'll kill you allergies aside
Portuguese person here, weed lover as well. It's not considered a first degree crime to hold weed ( or hash ) but it is considered 2nd degree crime, and you will be submitted to a fine and psychological treatment from professionals. This is on legal terms. In illegal terms, as a holder I must advise to always fear the police for they will fuck you even if you have a miserable amount. Welcome to Portugal, and if you're going to stay, make an effort to understand the traditions and learn the language as you would do in any other country. Cheers caralho
It will make you paranoid among other side effects If you don't have any medical issues or strong anxiety don't use it. And if you have to use it, it would be better to do it under medical supervision to balance the components which would fit better for you and I'm not sure if there is any clinic that does that here in Portugal.
Age of consent is different in each state, currently 16 in most, not to long ago it was lower n some of those southern states. Also don't forget the southern states have now lowered the age of consent for employment to 14 in slaughter houses, fast food joints, and demolition crews. Dont be surprised if all consent laws are lowered. The difference I see here verses there (and I've lived here almost five years) is maturity.
Portugal The age of consent is 14 years old, lthough sex with minors between 14 and 16 years old can be punished if carried out "abusing the (...) inexperience" of the minor, according to Article 173 of the Penal Code. Article 173.º Sexual acts with teenagers 1 - Whoever, being an adult, carries out a significant sexual act with a minor between 14 and 16 years old, or causes the latter to be carried out with another, abusing their inexperience, is punished with a prison sentence of up to 2 years. 2 - If the significant sexual act consists of copulation, oral coitus, anal coitus or vaginal or anal insertion of parts of the body or objects, the offender is punished with a prison sentence of up to 3 years. 3 - The attempt is also punishable.
the age of consent thing is misleading because it is not black and white hearing lawyers talk about the issue there are some things that are always mentioned - age gap larger than 2 years (i.e. 19 and 16) - up to 16 years old it is still abuse regardless of consent - if sexual intercourse happened while both were still minors, let us say 17 and 14, and continued after the 17 year old became an adult, it generally does not lead to a criminal case, but the minor will still (hopefully) be monitored by mental health specialists either way the court will still require a mental health specialist to verify if the minor was fit to make the decision
In Portugal you can drink on the public streets at any time as long as you don't cause any trouble. And the age of sexual consent is 14 but that is between minors or with an age gap of up to 4 years (and if allowed by their parents/legal guardians)

Although drinking in public s forbidden in about 15 countries around the world, it is mostly not enforced and many countries let the local municipalities take care of it.
I have two friends who are now married for almost twenty years, and he was 24 when starting dating the girl which became his wife. She was 14 at the time and he was 24. Contrary to moral doomdsday predictions nothing bad ever happened and they remain a great couple to this day here in Portugal.
Regarding age of consent, as far as I know, it's not a blank slate post 14, I think there can only be up to a 4 year gap between them until the person reaches 18. And if it's found that the "inexperience" of the person was exploited by the adult, the adult can get jailed. The reason the law has been kept, is due to protests from the Romani communities that still have arranged marriages, and it was impossible at the time for the justice system to enforce the law if it was changed, due to them still being nomadic and the number of guns they possess. Kind of bad.
That shit about romains and the number of guns they possess is the dumbest thing ever. I'll explain why at the bottom. Your interpretation is wrong, there's no age gap limit, and the law of consent between adolescents of 14 to 16 ONLY applies to adults (Use the translator): Artigo 173.º do CP: 1 - Quem, sendo maior, praticar ato sexual de relevo com menor entre 14 e 16 anos, ou levar a que ele seja praticado por este com outrem, abusando da sua inexperiência, é punido com pena de prisão até 2 anos. If there's a diferente of up to 4 years minus one day and the older party is 17, there's no law applied, no matter if there was abuse of inexperience. The law applies only if the adolescent is 14 at minimum and the older party is an adult, no matter the age. Now, the gipsys have no say in the law, that is so ignorant it hurts . The problem with romanis is not even sexual relationships and consent, is the ARRANGED MARRIAGES where girls are around 12 or 13 when it happens!!! The laws are based on more complex things and have absolutely nothing to do with the gipsies , what a dumb thing to say.
That's why as a Portuguese I have some difficulty in explain to Americans on the Internet what a real democracy and freedom looks like... As they think their "glorious" US of A is the "Greatest" on those values...
As an American, I've been dreaming of moving to a real and true free democracy like Portugal for a very long time. Thanks to the internet, we can learn if we want to. Cheers!
The title must be changed "Legal in Portugal vs USA"... "Or legal in Portugal (and other european countries) in comparison to the USA" 🤷♂️ as law in Portugal are in certain way similar as the rest of the Europeans
In Louisiana, you can own a gun for hunting, target shooting and self-defense. You also can have a conceal carry. You can own as many different types of guns you want. Louisiana is considered a sportsman paradise. Can I transfer my gun owner license to Portugal? Will Portugal recognize me as a legal gun owner ? Can I bring my guns with me when I move to Portugal? Where do I fine this information on the internet?
Portuguese person here. The consent age one isn’t outdated and I do agree with it. What’s wrong with a 19 yo dating a 17 yo ? Are you telling me that’s comparable to a 40 yo that abuses a 12 yo child ? I don’t get the concept that American have that a 17 yo is absolutely a child but a 18 yo is absolutely an adult…
if memory serves me right most countries, the US included, have some laws for if the pair is close in age. what I find odd about their concept of adulthood is how they handle drinking and driving (separate things, don't do both at once): you can drive any car or motorcycle by 16, but can't drink any alcohol until you are 21, really quite odd
Its true the age of consent is 14 but..the law provides for a prison sentence of one to eight years for anyone who sexually abuses a minor aged 14 or under, according to the Penal Code. It also protects teenagers between 14 and 16 years old from situations in which an adult could “abuse their inexperience”.
14 Y Dude! Portuguese speaking here, age of consent minimum is 18 as well! Where did you read such a thing? The only that fits that idea, is the fact that minors of 18 between 17 and 14y can consent to have sex between themselves! If a 18y+ has sex with someone with 17y or lower is send to jaile! You can prostitute yourself, but NONE can ask that service from you! (AKA isnt really legal)
the drinkin thing like really i'm from coimbra and you can drink everywhere at everytime on the streets lmao you have to see it to understand why police doesn't really care about it (unless you're directly and intentionally bothering somebody)
The law of guns is not what you think, you cant have an AR, you can have hunting guns maximum, and its very expensive to maintain the license and guns. just an heads up if you think guns equals every gun
you can have an AR if its barrel is longer than 30cm and the gun it self is longer 60 cm. if its semiauto from the factory and you can only have 10 round mags for it
It's amazing how we (Portuguese) can be so progressive with certain laws and then, be so conservative for other issues. If only our administrative powers matched the laws we have, and corruption stopped, we could be soooo much better.
The age of consent in Portugal is 14 if the other party "doesn't abuse the other's inexperience". In fact, if you're less than 4 years older you should be ok but over that age difference abuse can be alegged.
Regarding firearms, the video is misleading. The easiest way to get a legal firearm is indeed by becoming a hunter. For this, however, you need to take an exam, which is difficult, especially if you aren't a hunter. It normally requires attending paid training courses. Then you need to take the exam, which costs money. If you pass, you have a hunter license. Now you need to request a copy of your criminal record and, I believe, a medical statement. With this you go to the police to request a firearm license. This license will allow you to own firearms and to carry/use them on hunting events. You cannot walk around the city with your rifle. This license maybe may not be granted. Once you have the license, you can purchase the firearm and shells, but you need to have a qualified safe and you can be audited at any time. Finally, the license needs to be renewed, as well as, the hunting license. There are so many "hunters" because long time ago the licenses were easy to obtain. But this is no longer the case. And the number of hunters is decreasing, because most don't pass the exame to renew their licenses. Having a gun for self defense is a no go. You may want tol join a shooting sports club. This is a route to firearms, too. But it is very restrictive in which guns you can own and how to store and handle them. I would say that most Portuguese don't own a gun, contrary to the videos statement.
Forgot to say that as a hunter you cannot just go out into the wild and hunt game. You need to follow the laws and seasons. These laws are one of the reason the exam is so hard. You need to know all the laws. Also, almost all the territory is decided into private hunting associations. To hunt you need to be a member and pay for hunting plus any game you shoot.
"...Which will leave Americans completely in shock where the age of consent is 18." Um...no. The age of consent is 18 in Arizona, California, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, North Dakota, Oregon, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Wisconsin and Wyoming. That's only 12 out of the 50 States. The rest are 16 or 17. The age of consent is also 16 in American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. I can't find anything definitive on the U.S. Virgin Islands in a short internet search. (Maybe that's why Geoffrey Epstein had his seraglio there.) Good thing you're not dispensing legal advice, you've got your facts wrong right off the bat.
Changing the gender on birth certificate must be such a headache. Parents IDs won't match anymore, DNA won't match their gender possibly causing trouble for a police investigation. And here in Portugal where bureaucracy is king. I can't imagine how many hours of phone and queues must that be.
No mass shootings around here and hardly any serious gun crimes. Although 1 in every 4 people own a gun here. Sometimes maybe 1 serious crime shooting per month between some gangs shooting a rival member, but this hardly happens and may show up on the news once every 2 or 3 months. So , it is very safe place to live or visit. It is very shocking to Europeans that the USA has some type of mass shootings and school shootings once every 2 weeks ! None of that in Portugal.

What might be forbidden ar certain hours is selling alcohol from a bar to be consumed in the streets. Drinking in public is absolutely legal - and forbid it would be clearly against the Constitution.
Correction about drug laws were implemented to stop people ging to prison for consuming hard drugs that were brought and still nowadays delievered by other coutries that use our coast as a gate of entrance to europe. that started in the 60s and 70s not 80s or 90s.. ^^
Selling alcohol to under age kids is something u can do in Portugal you can't do in most of other countries ... Just need to go to Algarve in the summer to witness that...👍
The age of consent in Portugal is 14 years old if the partner is a minor, that is, less than 18 years old. If it is with a person of legal age, this becomes 16 years old.
So in the same sentence you take the moral highroad about "drugs" but then call people having issues with alcohol "children", despite alcohol inherently being a dangerous drug. Wow.
This is very weird... don't tink that if you are an adult, people will be fine with that, dating a 14 year old is fine if you are around the same age. If you are a grown up looking for children, you need help or you might find yourself in jail where inmates will show you what's it like for child rapists. I found this information : Dating someone who is less than 14 years is fine in Portugal as long as you don’t involve in sexual activities with them. It is illegal to perform sexual activities with a minor in Portugal. Anyone who engages in a major sexual act with or under 14 years of age, or causes him/her to do it with another person, is punished with imprisonment from one to eight years. Whoever commits the sexual act for profit is punished with imprisonment for up to 5 years. Who, being of legal age, engages in a major sexual act between the ages of 14 and 16, or causes it to be practiced by him/her with others, abusing their inexperience, is punished with imprisonment for up to 2 years.
I'm glad abortion is finally legal in Portugal... "Not everyone is capable of thinking in real, concrete terms. Many seek refuge in religious beliefs. In their weakness, they place their trust in “relics,” awaiting salvation at the hands of one stronger than themselves. Anyone who claims to be a strong and knowledgeable authority for such people, and to be acting on their behalf, has the duty to be conscious of the appropriate facts. If they aren’t, if they ignore or neglect that duty, claiming instead that their palpable lack of information and their abstract conceptions of “life” are sanctioned by God and practiced in the name of humanity, they are acting against life, by misusing the weakness and trust of the faithful and dangerously confusing them. The injunction against abortion goes even further: Consciously or unconsciously, it represents support for cruelty against children and active complicity in the creation of unwanted existences, existences that can easily become a liability for the community at large. When I see the passion with which Catholic priests - men childless by choice - fight against abortion, I can’t help asking what it is that motivates them. Is it a desire to prove that unlived life, as perhaps their own destinies suggest, is more important and more valuable than lived life? Was that, perhaps, how the parents of those passionately committed to stopping abortion thought, though they expressed it in different ways? Or is it a case of seeing to it that others share the same fate as oneself? Both are possible. Both are dangerous, when people are driven to blind and destructive actions by the dead hand of their own repression. It is, in fact, not surprising to find that those who are both victims and apologist for the use of violence and severity against children are often those who most passionately proclaim their love of the unborn child, i.e., the kernel of life. Abortion can, indeed, be seen as the most powerful symbol of the psychic annihilation and mutilation practiced since time immemorial on children. But to combat this evil merely at the symbolic level deflects us from the reality we should not evade for a moment longer: the reality of the abused and humiliated child, which, as a result of its disavowed and unresolved injuries, will insidiously become, either openly or aided by hypocrisy, a danger to society. It is above all the children already born that have a right to life - a right to coexistence with adults in a world in which, with or without the help of the church, violence against children has been unequivocally outlawed. Until such legislation exists, talk of “the right to life” remains not only a mockery of humanity but a contribution to its destruction." Alice Miller
Adult with a minor (under 18) is a crime also. The only exception is if a person from 16-18 applies and obtains economic independence ('emancipação is the name') in order to get married.
The age of sexual consent in Portugal was 12 years old during the liberal monarchy, during Portugal's previous political regime. The current political regime, the Portuguese Republic, raised the age of sexual consent to 14 years old. Until roughly two centuries ago, Portugal had a traditional Catholic royalty. Sexual activity was licit only within the Sacrament of Sacred Matrimony. According to Catholic Doctrine, sexual activity must be conducive to creating new life. A girl had to ovulate, to have reached reproductive age, to marry. The liberal and republican revolutions, were masonic, were anticlerical, profane. They established ages of sexual consent and legalised and regulated prostitution. A girl had to have reached the age of sexual consent, 12 years old during the liberal monarchy, until roughly a century ago, to practice the world's oldest profession. The best known Portuguese prostitute, Maria Severa Onofriana, became a prostitute upon turning 12 years old. Portugal hasn't been a Catholic state for roughly two centuries. In Japan, the age of sexual consent is 13 years old.
If a guy over 18 dates a girl under 18 that is what you call statutory rape, or in Portuguese (to the letter) Sexual abuse of minor. Age of consent is not the same thing. Look it up.

Let me rephrase the Drug subject a bit better: Portugal changed the view of Drug Consumption from being a Crime to be a Social Health Problem
For context, here is the law that states the age of consent (Use google translator at your own risk):
Artigo 173.º do CP:
1 - Quem, sendo maior, praticar ato sexual de relevo com menor entre 14 e 16 anos, ou levar a que ele seja praticado por este com outrem, abusando da sua inexperiência, é punido com pena de prisão até 2 anos.
Good luck trying that if caught with 100g of coke or weed.
that age of consent to minors under 16, this mean that if one got 17 and other 14 is ilegal
@astos5533 No its not, you're absolutely wrong. There's technically no age gap limit.
The age of consent IS 14, but read the law:
Artigo 173.º do CP:
1 - Quem, sendo maior, praticar ato sexual de relevo com menor entre 14 e 16 anos, ou levar a que ele seja praticado por este com outrem, abusando da sua inexperiência, é punido com pena de prisão até 2 anos.
I was about to spend a dozen of minutes mentioning that. Thanks for saving me time
@@brunobastos5533 it's not illegal if the parents consent to the relationship. I know a case that blowed my mind completely but is legal because of the parents 🤮

Nope, you're giving wrong information.
IT IS 14:
Artigo 173.º do CP:
1 - Quem, sendo maior, praticar ato sexual de relevo com menor entre 14 e 16 anos, ou levar a que ele seja praticado por este com outrem, abusando da sua inexperiência, é punido com pena de prisão até 2 anos.
There are exceptions, where the older person CANNOT be a tutor, professor, guardian, etc, basically a person of influence in the younger counterpart.
I don't get it, why do people spread misinformation on the comments?
@@rubiskelterI'm sorry, but I don't see how that contradicts what I said. The statute you just quotes says, *in line with what I said,* that an adult (i.e. 18 or older) having sex with someone between 14 and 16 is punishable with up to 2 years of prison - which means the adult *cannot invoke* the fact that the minor gave his/he *consent.* Which means the age of consent is not 14 if the other person is an adult. Precisely has I said.
I don't get why people comment when they just don't understand what themselves quoted.
@@GazilionPT are you serious? You just ignored the "abusando da sua inexperiência" or translating "abusing his/her inexperience" statement in the law? This abuse of inexperience is not default, and has to be proven in court to exist, so yes, you are very, very, very wrong , and your statement contradicts what the law states , as usually in a romantic relationship in which is assumed the main interest is not sexual gratification, there is no crime as long as the older party is not legal guardian, tutor, teacher, etc.
I really don't get it why people are so dum.b , i'm really being honest , this was so easy to interpret and still you weren't able to.
As a lawyer, it really annoys me that common people aren't able to interpret the simplest of laws.
PS: It really is funny how you can't see how stupid your rationale is, because the law is absolutely not precisely as you said as having 16 years is not an enough of a condition, WITH 16 THERE STILL CAN'T BE ANY ABUSE OF INEXPERIENCE!!!!!
Enfim, o chico espertismo típico do tuga.

The only law that I'm not comfortable with, is the age consent! Everything else is fair game in this day and age.
This happens in
ANY country in the world, including the USA. But one interesting thing I do notice, because I have doctors in the family, is that
teenage pregnancy is not a problem here or out of control , as in some other countries. Kids here are very well educated in all things.
age of consent is 14 buuuuut still a minor till 18, so the age of consent m8 get some idiots arrested, age of consent works for people of same age but yeah 14 is low.

Thank you for the perspective and comment 🙏🏻

Excellent video! Very useful for most of us who made Portugal our home. I was shocked by the age of consent part but it is not exactly like that. I don't think a boy or girl aged 14 know what they are doing. We were wild camping in Alentejo and the police came and told us we couldn't stay... Then one of the ladies told them we were only there for a few hours and we would all sleep inside our cars (Not RVs and she had a large van). Coolio, they said and left. They did warn some other guys who were there and they had to remove their tents. I don't understand the law, perhaps it is just so people don't make it permanent?
Ha! Very entertaining and interesting video indeed. Thanks, Dave.

What are you talking about? Are you living in the north of Portugal? We are religious fanatics... I think it's changed MASSIVELY in the last few decades. But still in the 80ies it was HIGHLY religious, everywhere you turrned. Hell, girls couldn't even go out by themselves (I don't even mean alone) in the early evening in GOOD neighborhoods, w/o a brother or male relative. You just didn't do that, period.

Very interesting! Thank you
Just adding a bit of context/nuance regarding the drug thing, there is a very blur line regarding this and how was described on the video is half-right.

Portugal
The age of consent is 14 years old, lthough sex with minors between 14 and 16 years old can be punished if carried out "abusing the (...) inexperience" of the minor, according to Article 173 of the Penal Code.
Article 173.º
Sexual acts with teenagers
1 - Whoever, being an adult, carries out a significant sexual act with a minor between 14 and 16 years old, or causes the latter to be carried out with another, abusing their inexperience, is punished with a prison sentence of up to 2 years.
2 - If the significant sexual act consists of copulation, oral coitus, anal coitus or vaginal or anal insertion of parts of the body or objects, the offender is punished with a prison sentence of up to 3 years.
3 - The attempt is also punishable.
the age of consent thing is misleading because it is not black and white
hearing lawyers talk about the issue there are some things that are always mentioned
- age gap larger than 2 years (i.e. 19 and 16)
- up to 16 years old it is still abuse regardless of consent
- if sexual intercourse happened while both were still minors, let us say 17 and 14, and continued after the 17 year old became an adult, it generally does not lead to a criminal case, but the minor will still (hopefully) be monitored by mental health specialists
either way the court will still require a mental health specialist to verify if the minor was fit to make the decision
In Portugal you can drink on the public streets at any time as long as you don't cause any trouble.
And the age of sexual consent is 14 but that is between minors or with an age gap of up to 4 years (and if allowed by their parents/legal guardians)
Art 173 do código penal.
"1.Quem, sendo maior, praticar ato sexual de relevo com menor entre 14 e 16 anos, pu levar a que ele seja praticado por este com outrem, abusando da sua inexperiência, é punido com pena de prisão até 2 anos."
Tecnicamente ilegal não é, o acusante têm de provar q o acusado abusou da inexperiência do menor, se isso não acontecer tecnicamente é legal.
Mas obviamente vai depender do juiz, mas estou curioso sobre como o supremo ia avaliar uma situação dessas.

Your interpretation is wrong, there's no age gap limit, and the law of consent between adolescents of 14 to 16 ONLY applies to adults (Use the translator):
Artigo 173.º do CP:
1 - Quem, sendo maior, praticar ato sexual de relevo com menor entre 14 e 16 anos, ou levar a que ele seja praticado por este com outrem, abusando da sua inexperiência, é punido com pena de prisão até 2 anos.

It is very shocking to Europeans that the USA has some type of mass shootings and school shootings once every 2 weeks !
None of that in Portugal.
No mass shootings, like in the USA, just reckoning.
School shootings is a very american problem.
Now if only we can get laws around the widespread and disgusting animal abuse
Could you explain? I'm unaware of this.
What might be forbidden ar certain hours is selling alcohol from a bar to be consumed in the streets. Drinking in public is absolutely legal - and forbid it would be clearly against the Constitution.
not sure if it'd be against the constitution, but the people would definitely not be happy with it
Correction about drug laws were implemented to stop people ging to prison for consuming hard drugs that were brought and still nowadays delievered by other coutries that use our coast as a gate of entrance to europe. that started in the 60s and 70s not 80s or 90s.. ^^
Selling alcohol to under age kids is something u can do in Portugal you can't do in most of other countries ...
Just need to go to Algarve in the summer to witness that...👍
In my country, the laws look exactly the same
I'm from portugal
The age of consent in Portugal is 14 years old if the partner is a minor, that is, less than 18 years old. If it is with a person of legal age, this becomes 16 years old.
So in the same sentence you take the moral highroad about "drugs" but then call people having issues with alcohol "children", despite alcohol inherently being a dangerous drug. Wow.
DRIVERS DRUNKS..IS OK
STOLEN.. WORK MAN IS ..OK.
😂😂😂
This is very weird... don't tink that if you are an adult, people will be fine with that, dating a 14 year old is fine if you are around the same age. If you are a grown up looking for children, you need help or you might find yourself in jail where inmates will show you what's it like for child rapists. I found this information :
Dating someone who is less than 14 years is fine in Portugal as long as you don’t involve in sexual activities with them.
Who, being of legal age, engages in a major sexual act between the ages of 14 and 16, or causes it to be practiced by him/her with others, abusing their inexperience, is punished with imprisonment for up to 2 years.
thank you Dave....i wish my wife was i year older...lol ...texas y'all
The age of consent does not work like that. You will be prosecuted, thankfully
it has more nuance, but yeah, if anyone knows of you doing that you'll get seriously judgemental looks at the absolute minimum
You can drink publicly in Brazil too
correction, the age of consent is 16, at 14 it is allowed, but not adult with a child
Adult with a minor (under 18) is a crime also. The only exception is if a person from 16-18 applies and obtains economic independence ('emancipação is the name') in order to get married.
It’s amazing how you both are incorrect. The article is posted many times in these comments. The video is correct
Look it up.
