May 17 Lecture: Sir James MacMillan ~ A Composer Speaks

Sir James MacMillan, one of today’s most successful international Catholic composers and conductors, will present, “A Composer Speaks: Timotheus, Bacchus and Cecilia - the power of music celebrated in a new work for Cincinnati” on May 17 at 7:30 pm at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary & School of Theology (MTSM).
MacMillan is returning to MTSM in celebration of the world premiere of his new composition, Timotheus, Bacchus and Cecilia, which the May Festival has commissioned for its 150th anniversary. His lecture, co-sponsored by the Sacred Music Institute at MTSM and the May Festival, will discuss the theological and musical themes at work in his new piece, which sets a portion of John Dryden’s famous poem, Alexander’s Feast; or, the Power of Music.
MacMillan’s musical language is flooded with influences from his Scottish heritage, Catholic faith, social conscience, and close connection with Celtic folk music, blended with influences from Far Eastern, Scandinavian and Eastern European Music.
