Selle SMP TRK saddle, New Drone, Fell off the bike....OUCH broken/ cracked ribs

  • I was planning a 50 mile circular ride to test out my new SMP 4 Selle saddle to see if it was any more comfortable than my previous saddles. IT WAS.
I am really impressed with the comfort of this saddle sofar.
My 50 mile ride was cut back to 38 miles as I crashed on some slippery chalk falling hard on my ribs, it feels like I have cracked a rib or two!
At first I had no pain but as the ride continued the pain started to set in, I could also feel some cracking as I moved, so some damage has been done. I think it's just the ribs and there's nothing that can be done for those apart from taking it steady for a while.
I hope to be back out on the bike and out for a camp very soon:)
Music used in this video is all from the TH-cam audio library:

Thanks everyone. I finally decided to go to the hospital today 19th October as the pain wasn't getting any less. The Doctor had a good listen to my chest and is certain my vital organs are fine and decided to treat me with pain killing medications. He didn't think an x-ray was necessary as rib fractures generally are left to mend on their own.
As far as he was concerned the main thing was to get me deep breathing again (something that I haven't been able to do due to pain). The pain killers are working a like a charm and it won't be long before I'm back to normal.
He did say best not to cycle for the time being just incase I should fall off and injure myself further, but the action of cycling would help with the deep breathing that I need to do.
He said generally injuries like this can take upto 6 weeks to heal.
So it's just a matter of time before I heal up.
I shall not be riding my bike on slippery chalk again!

Wishing you a very speedy recovery. I tipped my motorcycle over while navigating a muddy section and landed with my chest on top of my on-edge mirror. The mirror shattered from the impact. So I can relate to your injury and sympathize with you.

Hi Sandy. So sorry to see you take that tumble, I thought at first that it had knocked the wind out of you but then realized that there was more going on. What a trooper, mounting your bike again and riding home. Many would have thrown in the towel and called home for a lift. I felt for you when you stopped and put your jacket on, it was a struggle for sure. Hopefully you don’t have a broken rib. I was looking forward to your ride through Avesbury as I’d just watched JP Lamoureux take a walk through where the stones are located, what a truly magical, beautiful place.

Hi Sandy, great video agn om, fb on the apple scrumping, hope ribs doing ok, did my ribs when i fell off Himi on mud then did em agn 2 wks later when i tripped on a bramble hiding in the grass. Anyhow as you know i did over 100k cycling to work and the best saddle i had was a Brooks leather hard looking shiny type, just kept doing it with Brooks proofhide and kept the leather tensioned with adjuster and 599 seat. 73ob. @@WiltshireMan I did the Great Western Way (NCR 4) from Bristol to Reading with an overnight campsite near Pewsey.
So basically on or shadowing the Kennet and Avon. Such a tranquil route, bar the major towns of course.
My friend who I met at the Campsite was based there for 4 days in his van doing day rides following 'lost lanes' routes. He came down the Greenway into Avebury on Saturday and said it was pretty treacherous, where you fell obviously.
I already have a Redshift Suspension stem and this months pay cheque purchase is their seatpost. I ummed and ahhhed between that and the Cane Creek but think I'll go with the Redshift as it seems to have more longevity according to the reviews. Both seem to be very good at their job but choosing between is really Elastomer vs Spring ultimately.

I know how painful broken ribs can be. I spent 20 years in the military with only an injured knee. In the 30 years since then I have broken six ribs and torn shoulder sinews in my adventures. The treatment ordered by the doctor was ibuprofen and let it them heal. They are going to hurt for a while, don't press your luck, let them heal. I love the bicycle and camping videos, keep on keeping on as long as you can, it heartens me to see you overcoming the things that life throws your way.

If I can give you a few tips about broken ribs in return - naproxen is useful as an anti-inflammatory / painkiller but speak to your doctor, give your ribs some support with a cushion of pillow when sleeping and also your hand when sneezing and coughing. That was a bugger falling off on the chalk. I've found wet chalk to be the slipperiest surface of all.
I agree about Lycra, normal clothing does me and the only cycling thing is a helmet. I know some don't like them but it's a personal choice.
England sure is a beautiful place. The one problem is the number of people at landmarks and well known places. Plenty of lesser known sites if you're prepared to walk or cycle.
I'm very interested in the saddle. I find it hard to get a comfortable one but you've no idea if it's right until you've bought it and rode
on it. Maybe someone should set up a saddle library where for a small fee you could try different ones.🤔

Get well soon Sandy. Might I suggest you get some Diclofenec / Voltarol / Movealat gel to put on your ribs?
I had a similar fall 6yrs ago and cracked a rib, then the next year fell and fractured my upper left humorous (the first ride back hurt like blazes as I’d not used the muscles for a couple of months, but the second ride felt much better).
I tried a Charge Spoon on my Brompton, every road imperfection made its presence felt 😮. But I soon changed to a Brooks B17 Flyer.
Have you considered getting a Peli case (or similar) to protect your cameras & drone?

Great news about the saddle. My MTB hybrid bike has been standing under a shredded tarp for over 5 yrs as I stopped riding mainly because by butt was not at all enjoying it. Might see if I can get it running again and invest in a saddler. Lord knows I need the exercise.

Get that bike back on the road, the saddle I'm sure will help you, it's not overly expensive either. Everyone needs to get a little exercise, a minimum of 3 times per week and you don't need to go crazy, just a few minutes of cardio will do you good
