I'm from California, too. Well, originally from Texas, but I grew up in Southern California since I was 3 years old. I've never lived in another country before, but my dad does work for United Airlines, so I've been to many places all over the world. It's a whole different experience living in another country, I would imagine. I think it's a great thing, it gives you a better perspective on life.

Try documenting a day in your life as a school going person; starting from getting ready in the morning, getting to school, what or how your school looks like etc (not sure if they will allow this), after school, evening and heading to bed. Have fun with your new life in SH, and the fastest way for me when I started learning Chinese, was to practice speaking it, even if you make a mistake. Watch some TV series with Eng subs to follow along, maybe some anime to start with.
As a teacher had taught me the amount of time spend on writing, spend the same amount of time in speaking. The reason why some Chinese would come up to a foreigner because they want to practice English speaking to get comfortable with the language. More often they are very good with writing but lack in speaking.
