- What can $300 a month get you in China? What kind of apartment can you rent for that price? Let's take a tour of my Chinese apartment and find out. We've rented this apartment here in China for $300 a month, which when compared to similar apartments in Beijing or Shanghai is a really good deal.
Hope this video can guide you on renting apartments in China. How does it compare to your rent currently?

I was really lucky to have the opportunity to live in Shenzhen for about 7 years. Oh yes, I bought all of my appliances through Taobao, fridge, washing machine, TV, toaster, microwave oven, etc...they were all cheaper than in the stores and came with free delivery to my doorstep. Life was really good....😅 Hopefully, I can visit my friends end of this year.
Thanks for sharing! Yessss the to the door delivery is so nice 😂
China in Deflation
According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics of the People's Republic of China, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for January 2024 fell by 0.8% year-on-year, a decline much larger than expected. This marks the fourth consecutive month of year-on-year decline and the largest monthly decline since 2009.
The Producer Price Index (PPI) also experienced a year-on-year decrease as businesses further lowered factory prices in search of buyers for their products. PPI has seen monthly declines throughout last year (2023).
There's a saying in economics that if inflation is likened to a severe cold, then deflation is akin to cancer. This illustrates the severity of deflation.
China's economy has entered a deflationary phase, which inflicts far greater damage than inflation. When things were supposed to get more expensive, they are now being discounted. If everything is discounted, who will make purchases? With reduced purchasing, the economy naturally contracts. As the economy contracts, layoffs follow, leading to people losing their incomes. Without income, there's no consumption, leading to a backlog of products, further exacerbating deflation. Thus, a vicious cycle ensues.
Over the past six months, housing prices have been declining, car prices are down, and even pork prices have been lingering at low levels.
To put it simply, deflation means people hoard money in banks because of fears about future uncertainty, thus refraining from spending. According to data from the People's Bank of China, in 2022, total renminbi deposits increased by 26.26 trillion yuan for the whole year, a year-on-year increase of 6.59 trillion yuan, with household deposits increasing by 17.84 trillion yuan. On July 11, 2023, the central bank released financial statistics for the first half of 2023, reporting that by the end of June, renminbi deposits totaled 278.62 trillion yuan, an 11% increase compared to the previous year. This indicates that people's inclination to save is far greater than their inclination to consume.

My son lived in NYC back in 2014 in a tiny unfurnished studio of less than 300 square feet for $1800 per month. He had to pay at least another one month rent to brokers. Don’t know how much the rent would be now for the same studio. His monthly income after tax was a little more than 3k. Great of you Lizzy to show us how inexpensive it is to live in China.
So So different from the US, the UK, EU, Canada, Australia, N.Z, Hong Kong and Singapore.
I think the Chinese and Japanese are incredibly smart for being able to house large amounts of people in comfortable and safe apartments.

Interesting and informative room tour, good job. Actually in China some apartments or condos do have bathrooms with shower area and toilet seperated, we call it 干湿分离(dry area and wet area seperated).
Very Nice view from the balcony, the street are very green lots of tree surrounding the apartment blocks.
Beautiful apartment,Thank you for sharing
Lizzy, you really so nice and telling the truths of China, I really attracted by it and I have to get myself in as soon as possible. Keep on exploring and share with us.
It looks spacious for one person, and it has everything you need. I like the views from both of your balcony. $300!!!
What is a little different is that renters pay the condo association fees in China, but probably just around $40/month, in the USA that would be $300 alone
China has no property tax, so that does not need to be added to the rent.
Landlord's homeowner's insurance is a low $80/year, in U.S that would be $800/year, all that added up is why U.S/Canada rent is $2400/month for a 2bd condo
Awesome 🤩 thanks for sharing 👏👏👏greetings from Hong Kong 😁
I like how you make things easy and simple but lovely in your rented house. Honestly, there are so many things we have are common because we bought them from taobao too especially the shelves and floor mats. The only big difference in Singapore here is the rent which is 10x or more for a unit like yours. I'm happy that you got to find a good place to settle down at your young age, Lizzy. Enjoy your life~ !
Kunming is nice. You can take the new train to Laos if you want a short break. Comfortable and not expensive. About 7.5 hours to Luang Prabang from Kunming nan station.

Hi Lizzy, it looks that the rents have come down. In 2003 I was paying 800 USD per month plus the utility bill, plus sat TV in Shanghai Pudong, close to Century park. It was brand new and had 2 bedrooms, 2 spacious balconies, living room, dining room, and enormous kitchen ( I looked 3 months for that ) and a large bathroom with shower and washmachine. There was also a lift.
It was in walking distance of the new Maglev station in Pudong. There was also a carrefour, decathlon and a Brico center. So I am surprised that the rent is so low now. Good for you !
1, Lizzy is living in Kunming, Yunnan Province. And I believe she is not living in a very center area. The rent is much lower there than Pudong, Shanghai.
2, I think I know which compound you had lived in.😁 It costed about RMB 6000~7000 to rent a 3 bedroom apartment there in 2010. I guess the USD 800 you had paid in 2003 was a little bit higher than the normal market level because you are a foreigner or the apartment is bigger or had better condition than others.
Rents in Shanghai and the immediate area have increased since 2003, it would be difficult to find that price these days, that's why I moved to a city 38 minutes away by high speed train and pay 2200 rmb a month for 3 beds and 2 baths.

In sharp contrast, most Americans are living paycheck-to-paycheck. It's getting more and more difficult to save money in the US, in other word, you'll never be able to retire, you have to work until you die.
*In sharp contrast*. Now show us the sharp contrast of average salaries in China compared to US.
@@FUZASHIII very hard to measure

@@Auzzzie82 every second American struggling to feed themselves? Are you talking about the obese ones ? 💀
@@FUZASHIII- there is little to no manufacturing in the US. Jobs went to China. For those who don’t have a technical job, most work in the service industry. With the cost of living in the US people are definitely struggling. Inflation is at a peak as well. Fuel for vehicles in the Midwest is on average $3.50-4.00/per gallon. Groceries are high, interest rates for homes are high. So it’s not just obese people. There are many struggling.
In Nigeria, we pay annually or bi-annually. Like you, I like this system because we don't have to worry about rent for at least a year once that has been sorted. Gives you peace of mind whenever there is an emergency because you know that no matter what, you have a place to call home.

Good on you to enjoy your life in China. The appreciation of what you found is so genuine. I agree, China is such a safe and friendly country, totally opposite to what the western media says about it. I am always asked by my friends, even family members whether I was followed or harrassed in China. I have never been harrassed in China but do not know whether I have ever been followed. But I have never felt uncomfortable travelling in China because I am just an ordinary individual unimportant to China or even my own country. So why should a big nation like China wastes its resources on me?! If I was China, I would not!
Where I live rent is more than 700euros and that's for "social" housing. Free market rent is way more.

I pay 2.5x that amount over in the English countryside but when I look out from my window I can see about 10 miles of countryside. I'm just on the edge of a small town. Like you were saying with the balcony, being able to go outside in the summer and have your own private space is very important. As for like for like, i think it is swings and roundabouts. We English like our large kitchens. That's an odd one. I'd suppose the Chinese were well into their cookery. I like your floors though.
