  • What can $300 a month get you in China? What kind of apartment can you rent for that price? Let's take a tour of my Chinese apartment and find out. We've rented this apartment here in China for $300 a month, which when compared to similar apartments in Beijing or Shanghai is a really good deal.
Hope this video can guide you on renting apartments in China. How does it compare to your rent currently?

I was really lucky to have the opportunity to live in Shenzhen for about 7 years. Oh yes, I bought all of my appliances through Taobao, fridge, washing machine, TV, toaster, microwave oven, etc...they were all cheaper than in the stores and came with free delivery to my doorstep. Life was really good....😅 Hopefully, I can visit my friends end of this year.

      China in Deflation
According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics of the People's Republic of China, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for January 2024 fell by 0.8% year-on-year, a decline much larger than expected. This marks the fourth consecutive month of year-on-year decline and the largest monthly decline since 2009.
The Producer Price Index (PPI) also experienced a year-on-year decrease as businesses further lowered factory prices in search of buyers for their products. PPI has seen monthly declines throughout last year (2023).
There's a saying in economics that if inflation is likened to a severe cold, then deflation is akin to cancer. This illustrates the severity of deflation.
China's economy has entered a deflationary phase, which inflicts far greater damage than inflation. When things were supposed to get more expensive, they are now being discounted. If everything is discounted, who will make purchases? With reduced purchasing, the economy naturally contracts. As the economy contracts, layoffs follow, leading to people losing their incomes. Without income, there's no consumption, leading to a backlog of products, further exacerbating deflation. Thus, a vicious cycle ensues.
Over the past six months, housing prices have been declining, car prices are down, and even pork prices have been lingering at low levels.
To put it simply, deflation means people hoard money in banks because of fears about future uncertainty, thus refraining from spending. According to data from the People's Bank of China, in 2022, total renminbi deposits increased by 26.26 trillion yuan for the whole year, a year-on-year increase of 6.59 trillion yuan, with household deposits increasing by 17.84 trillion yuan. On July 11, 2023, the central bank released financial statistics for the first half of 2023, reporting that by the end of June, renminbi deposits totaled 278.62 trillion yuan, an 11% increase compared to the previous year. This indicates that people's inclination to save is far greater than their inclination to consume.

What is a little different is that renters pay the condo association fees in China, but probably just around $40/month, in the USA that would be $300 alone
China has no property tax, so that does not need to be added to the rent.
Landlord's homeowner's insurance is a low $80/year, in U.S that would be $800/year, all that added up is why U.S/Canada rent is $2400/month for a 2bd condo

It was brand new and had 2 bedrooms, 2 spacious balconies, living room, dining room, and enormous kitchen ( I looked 3 months for that ) and a large bathroom with shower and washmachine. There was also a lift.
It was in walking distance of the new Maglev station in Pudong. There was also a carrefour, decathlon and a Brico center. So I am surprised that the rent is so low now. Good for you !

2, I think I know which compound you had lived in.😁 It costed about RMB 6000~7000 to rent a 3 bedroom apartment there in 2010. I guess the USD 800 you had paid in 2003 was a little bit higher than the normal market level because you are a foreigner or the apartment is bigger or had better condition than others.

Hiii! Yeah so when I go to see the doctor, to make an appointment is like 20rmb, and maybe medicine or a drip! Even when I had food poisoning, all the tests and stuff I got never exceeded 100rmb! When I go for a full medical check once a year(like everything, blood, body scans everything) I pay 400rmb

Would it be possible to rent such an apartment short term? It’ll be nice to be able to spend a couple of months in Kunming and get to travel around Yunnan.

Good on you to enjoy your life in China. The appreciation of what you found is so genuine. I agree, China is such a safe and friendly country, totally opposite to what the western media says about it. I am always asked by my friends, even family members whether I was followed or harrassed in China. I have never been harrassed in China but do not know whether I have ever been followed. But I have never felt uncomfortable travelling in China because I am just an ordinary individual unimportant to China or even my own country. So why should a big nation like China wastes its resources on me?! If I was China, I would not!

I pay 2.5x that amount over in the English countryside but when I look out from my window I can see about 10 miles of countryside. I'm just on the edge of a small town. Like you were saying with the balcony, being able to go outside in the summer and have your own private space is very important. As for like for like, i think it is swings and roundabouts. We English like our large kitchens. That's an odd one. I'd suppose the Chinese were well into their cookery. I like your floors though.

Meanwhile, what you rented was a 2 bedroom apartment, right?
But I think your apartment is quite cheap to rent for a 2 room apartment.

Thank you for the information regarding costs. But the realisation is that we are being ripped off in the West. We were informed via the Media in the UK this last week that we are all paying 37% in taxes, before we pay our rent etc etc. We pay 20% VAT on petrol and a Petrol Tax. I could go on. Enjoy the balcony.
