    Here we have a listening edition of Guitar Tone Tuesday! We compare 2 Dreadnaught acoustic guitars made by Yamaha. In the extremely affordable camp, we have a Yamaha F310 (the kind of guitar you could find in a multi pack with a tuner and gig bag at your favourite retail store). In the mid level solid top guitar camp we have a vintage FG365S (from 1980/1981).
    Lucas always recommends that people get an acoustic guitar with a solid top if they can afford it. Let us know if this video proves that point or not!

      Thanks my friend! Can’t tell you how much I appreciate that. I’ll be back to shut up and pluck it this Friday, and until then hope you have a great week and stay safe as well!

    Hey Lucas, the solid top guitar is the winner in this comparison. It sounds much fuller. But I think not every solid top guitar sounds better than any laminate top guitar. A solid top may be cut too thick to be resonant enough or have poor wood quality. So, no blind buys online please! This does not make it easy for an absolute beginner to choose a guitar. I think the laminated top guitars are good as campfire guitars that have to be cheap and robust but not for beginners. I would always advise any beginner to buy a good sounding mid-priced guitar with a solid top, nothing special or fancy, just something decent.

      I agree with you Thomas. If a solid top is cut too thick the guitar can sound either very thin or overly heavy in the low end. With acoustic guitars whether they are solid or laminate it’s all about trying multiple guitars, if possible multiples of the model you are interested in in a shop. The difference from Guitar to Guitar is quite astounding

    The solid top back and sides is much better. I have a FG830 which has a solid spruce top and laminate rosewood back and sides. Great guitar.

      Yes, those are great guitars. Good choice!

    Even a cheap guitar sound great in a good pair of hands, great playing.

    I like the solid top a little better. I don’t have a word for it, but it sings.

      I hear you Aaron, it just sings! Thanks for watching!

    I heard the difference less with the strumming, but definitely with the fingerstyle picking. Solid top was much more richer. My old 1988 laminate Yamaha F400 was a cheaper version of the 310 but fun to play (loved the neck profile), yet I couldn't wait to get a solid top and overdid it on my next purchase of an Australian solid top/body. The F400 remained a good 'beater' guitar in dry winter weather, on road trips etc which I eventually replaced with a 2007 FG730S (which is a cheaper version of this gorgeous FG365). The 730 is richer, more stable than the 400 but a little too dressy to be a beater like the 400 and the profile neck is a hint bigger. I enjoy all yamahas but a budget friendly solid top like the 730S or the 365 is an all-round great choice for all occasions! Great video!

      Great advice here and wonderful observations. Sounds like the Yamaha you have stuck with is certainly the right choice. Really enjoyed having this 365 around for a couple of days!

    The solid top certainly sounds livelier, although I believe you could make a First Act sound like a Martin

    • @LucasHaneman
      @LucasHaneman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is too funny. Personally I think first act is definitely pushing it. I’ve got some pretty funny stories about those guitars and students who purchased them, but suffice to say thanks for watching the video. I appreciate it as always!

      0:01 glad you like the video and happy to hear about your experience with Yamaha guitars! Not quite an FG 800 but I just featured a Yamaha FG 730 S on the show this week. The solid top definitely does make a big difference but for a laminate top guitar, Yamaha knows what they’re doing for sure!
