Mike Tyson also lost a daughter, and he has carried himself with strength and dignity. The man can't even talk about his little girl without weeping. Not only is Joe, a well educated man, among many different aspects, but he also shows why he got into this in the first place, with interviews like this! His capability to just sit back and listen and learn, is truly admiring!! Especially in Tucker and Tillis though, there was no real adversity for him to overcome, these were no wars. Frazier/Ali 3, Duran/Barkley, Gatti/Ward, Leonard/Hearn1, etc. etc. etc. These were fights where in each case the victor was in very deep waters and found a way out.

I remember watching this 3 years ago as a new Yorker who grew up idolizing tyson studying all the available training footage all his fights and him being the reason i started boxing and now after learning more about tyson and also understanding the things he did as well as the circumstances of his career, teddy atlas isnt wrong in this, you dont have to agree, but hes not wrong
The idea of judging athletes on how they perform when it really counts isn’t wrong. But to boil mike’s career down and say he has 0 wins and that essentially he lost every fight that really mattered is completely ignorant. There’s no accurate way to look at any of tyson’s wins and say definitively that he had to dig deep or not. It’s completely subjective and in no way measurable. You don’t always know what’s going on in these fighter’s lives at the time they’re in the ring. I guarantee you there were wins in tyson’s career where he had to dig deep. And i also guarantee you some of those wins he made look incredibly easy.
Teddy is wrong. Mike didn’t bite Evander to get out of the fight. He bit him because of the head butts and the repetitive low blows, and the referee doing absolutely nothing about it. It was frustration, not cowardice.

What Teddy is saying could hold true for the last part of Mike's career when he was only boxing for money and didn't have that hunger anymore. But life dealt him a bad hand man. From a boy who grew up on the streets and never knew any love from his parents to achieving something great in his career and being a good dad now. Mike Tyson has come a long way and he deserves all the credit for that.

He was adopted by a man who had already trained 2 World Champion fighters and shared with Mike the structure and discipline principles that make a successful person. He became successful and turned on 2 out of the 3 people most responsible for HELPING him. Mike achieved greatness, but he has a troubled soul , throughout his entire life he has been fighting his demons...the Cus Catskill environment helped him, but it never cured him of his inner problems.(he was fighting in school and touching girls even then,)..he recently beat up a guy on a plane for verbally pushing him to far....Mike is a good guy and we wish him the best.

Teddy is dead right though. I had a little league coach that told me the same thing. We won like 12 games, or whatever it was back then, with no losses one year. My coach told us, "we looked good but we didn't learn a damn thing about who we are!" As little kids, we had no idea at the time what he was talking about. Once I was in college and playing ball, it hit me like a ton of bricks, though. You learn nothing until you have to suffer, until you take a loss, get knocked down and have to get back up. That's when you learn what you're made of and who you really are, not from being victorious!

He never said he didn't...he merely pointed out the fact that the best win on Tyson's record is probably his win over a 38 year old Larry Holmes who had been retired for 2 years after 2 consecutive losses to a light heavyweight, and was all but paid to take a dive.

Teddy is spot on here. Tyson admitted this himself, not directly tho. There’s a podcast where mike tyson speaks of muhammad ali and gets emotional. Ali is the prime example of a fighter overcoming adversity; the george foreman fight. In the podcast Tyson says: “that’s the part where he overshines me” with that referring to the fighter’s mentality he then continued saying “he’s willing to die in there, I’m not willing to die in there”. It’s a really touching moment, highly recommend to watch that podcast.

I agree. The deaths of Cus and then Jimmy Jacobs in '88 were turning points. Both men and especially Cus were the only father figures in Mike's life. It was like he lost a father twice. At any age that's rough but especially if you're in your early 20s. People that disagree have probably never experienced that. Once he left Kevin Rooney it was pretty much all downhill from there sadly. Tyson will always be my favorite boxer of all time.

I always come back and listen to this clip and have two observations: 1). Teddy is speaking absolute truth here and gives a million dollars worth of insight on life. 2). Rogan is a master. Doesn’t cut Teddy off and let’s him go. There’s not another interviewer on the planet who would have been able to let someone talk without interjecting or sidetrack the conversation. He's talking about overcoming ring adversity in the moment, in the ring. He was right. Mike couldn't fight back once he got hurt. Look Ali, Frazier, Foreman against Lyle- , against Jimmy Young, Foreman got off the canvas against Lyle. These guys kept fighting in the ring. Mike no. Mike didn't comeback after getting punched.
Obviously now Mike is different and has changed for the better, what Teddy is talking about is about the past. And lets be objective, I believe everything Teddy said, if you looked at old vids of Tyson you would probably agree. I actually think Teddy is spot on here, as Mikes big turn around as a human being came after his fighting career. Go and analyze Mikes losses, he just got frustrated and outworked in his losses when his ways didn't work. He overcame that only after his active boxing career was over.

flyinglizards80 I’m sitting on a park bench, in Copley Sq in Boston one day, on my lunch break. I got my headphones on and AC/DC in my ears. I got a Boston Herald that I got at the CVS across the street and some Burger King. I’m just minding my own business. There’s a group of guys (4 or 5) from The Nation of Islam literally right behind me. So I turn down the music because I’m wondering what the hell they could be talking about. The conversation was about pigeons. I spun head around and there’s Mike Tyson telling these guys everything there is to know about pigeons. I remembered someone once showing him how he used to raise pigeons. This went on for minutes. The whole group of them starts to walk away. For some stupid reason, I don’t know why I say “Hey Mike thanks for the education, I come here every day on my lunch break and I’ve always wondered about the pigeons” (which was true there were thousands of them there) He turns and looks at me and I’m looking right into those eyes. My heart stopped, I’m thinking run, before I know it he’s rounded the park bench and was right in front of me and I got no place to go. He’s says calmly and politely says What’s your name”, so I answered (not in my best voice either). He says “You’re very lucky to have a place like this, it’s amazing”. Then stuck out his hand to shake mine. It was like shaking hands with someone that was wearing a catchers mitt. I said something like it was great to meet him. He walked away. I found out later he was in Boston for a mandatory psych evaluation after he bit Holyfield. Sorry for being long however there are 2 types of people in this world. Those that can teach and those that can’t. We can say a lot about Mike Tyson, I can safely say he can put on a clinic about everything you wanted to know about pigeons and do it well. I used to laugh when I heard him talk, since then I now just listen. Most of the time he’s actually saying some real good truths.

Dennis Moore Tyson fought a bunch of below average fighters in the 80s. When it comes to the best fighters of his generation like Holyfield and Lewis he lost. Once he knew he couldn’t knock em out he folded, like a bully getting punched back.

My father was a writer for many years with Sports Illustrated. He first met Cus in the 1950’s and became very good friends with him. They talked all the time. Shortly after Cus first got Mike into the ring , Cus called my dad and said that he has a 13 year old kid who will end up being the youngest heavyweight of all time. Cus was 100 percent convinced. Cus also thought that Mike could end up being the greatest of all time but he said that there were too many variables to make that claim. Here is my view on what happened with Mike. He loved and worshipped Cus. And Mike also liked and respected greatly his manager, Jimmy Jacobs. Mike ended up losing Cus and Jimmy at a young age (21). Jimmy and Cus (especially Cus) could tell Mike what to do and he would do it. Without either one of them around, the limit to which Mike would listen to his trainers diminished over time. To a degree he became uncontrollable and unteachable and that became his downfall. That does not mean I don’t respect what Mike achieved. But I do think that if Cus had lived a longer life Mike would have achieved even more.

Another additional point is that all the other champions at the time were able to watch Mike ascend to a heavyweight title. They could assimilate his style over the years and prepare to fight Mike by dissecting his style of success. Lennox Lewis was just waiting to dissect and utilize the strategy advantage that he clearly had with his size and skill. It’s possible no fighter was better prepared than Buster Douglas, physically and mentally, in his match against Mike in Japan. Lennox displayed a very similar strategy and skill later on. At 19 and 20 years old, Mike would have likely beat both of them. Mike showed flashes of previous greatness after jail. What could’ve been? Mike entrapped himself unfortunately. Mike missed out on 3 years of fighting and training at his best. Oh well, stuff happens. Mike has more than bounced back in life, “The Biggest Fight”. Those lost years were at the prime physical age of 25 to 28 years old, all that time lost out of the fight game. Problems, Court and stress , Mike lost more than 3 prime years. This IMO.
I agree. The original Tyson was invincible. So invincible, he took Douglas for granted. After leaving Kevin Rooney and teaming up with Don King and trainer Aaron Snow he took a downshift in his ability. Tyson no longer moved quite the same. After his prison sentence, Tyson, although a threat, was no longer the highly skilled somewhat smaller fighter he was in his prior reign. Tyson was still (somewhat) good in his muscle memory after prison, but he was not as great a fighter as he was in his initial appearance on the stage. Even though I have great respect for Hollyfield and Lennox Lewis, IMHO, the original Tyson would have defeated both of these fighters with KOs.

It's almost as if while watching Teddy talk you can see in his minds eye, in those moments he's not talking to Joe, he's talking directly to Tyson. He knows he's finally saying it publicly. I'm sure it's something Teddy tried really hard throughout those years to instill in Mike, in his own way, but never could. He was choosing his words really carefully. And it hit a serious nerve. Teddy wasn’t taking away from Mikes physical greatness as an athlete, but it takes more than having physical greatness to be a great champion. And Mike didn’t have the other part of what makes a great champion great, and that’s heart. What drove Mike was rage, not heart, rage only lasts so long. But I will say Mike has now become “that man” who has endured and overcome adversity not with rage but with heart. I admire Mike now more than I did watching him in his prime as a boxer. Mike now is a great champion in life! God bless him.

Especially in Tucker and Tillis though, there was no real adversity for him to overcome, these were no wars. Frazier/Ali 3, Duran/Barkley, Gatti/Ward, Leonard/Hearn1, etc. etc. etc. These were fights where in each case the victor was in very deep waters and found a way out.

I remember watching this 3 years ago as a new Yorker who grew up idolizing tyson studying all the available training footage all his fights and him being the reason i started boxing and now after learning more about tyson and also understanding the things he did as well as the circumstances of his career, teddy atlas isnt wrong in this, you dont have to agree, but hes not wrong
The idea of judging athletes on how they perform when it really counts isn’t wrong. But to boil mike’s career down and say he has 0 wins and that essentially he lost every fight that really mattered is completely ignorant. There’s no accurate way to look at any of tyson’s wins and say definitively that he had to dig deep or not. It’s completely subjective and in no way measurable. You don’t always know what’s going on in these fighter’s lives at the time they’re in the ring. I guarantee you there were wins in tyson’s career where he had to dig deep. And i also guarantee you some of those wins he made look incredibly easy.

What Teddy is saying could hold true for the last part of Mike's career when he was only boxing for money and didn't have that hunger anymore. But life dealt him a bad hand man. From a boy who grew up on the streets and never knew any love from his parents to achieving something great in his career and being a good dad now. Teddy is dead right though. I had a little league coach that told me the same thing. We won like 12 games, or whatever it was back then, with no losses one year. My coach told us, "we looked good but we didn't learn a damn thing about who we are!" As little kids, we had no idea at the time what he was talking about. Once I was in college and playing ball, it hit me like a ton of bricks, though. You learn nothing until you have to suffer, until you take a loss, get knocked down and have to get back up. That's when you learn what you're made of and who you really are, not from being victorious!

Teddy is spot on here. Tyson admitted this himself, not directly tho. There’s a podcast where mike tyson speaks of muhammad ali and gets emotional. Ali is the prime example of a fighter overcoming adversity; the george foreman fight. In the podcast Tyson says: “that’s the part where he overshines me” with that referring to the fighter’s mentality he then continued saying “he’s willing to die in there, I’m not willing to die in there”. It’s a really touching moment, highly recommend to watch that podcast.

He's talking about overcoming ring adversity in the moment, in the ring. He was right. Mike couldn't fight back once he got hurt. Look Ali, Frazier, Foreman against Lyle- , against Jimmy Young, Foreman got off the canvas against Lyle. These guys kept fighting in the ring. Mike no. Mike didn't comeback after getting punched.
Obviously now Mike is different and has changed for the better, what Teddy is talking about is about the past. There’s a group of guys (4 or 5) from The Nation of Islam literally right behind me. So I turn down the music because I’m wondering what the hell they could be talking about.
The conversation was about pigeons. I spun head around and there’s Mike Tyson telling these guys everything there is to know about pigeons. I remembered someone once showing him how he used to raise pigeons.
This went on for minutes. The whole group of them starts to walk away. For some stupid reason, I don’t know why I say “Hey Mike thanks for the education, I come here every day on my lunch break and I’ve always wondered about the pigeons” (which was true there were thousands of them there)
He turns and looks at me and I’m looking right into those eyes. My heart stopped, I’m thinking run, before I know it he’s rounded the park bench and was right in front of me and I got no place to go.
He’s says calmly and politely says What’s your name”, so I answered (not in my best voice either). He says “You’re very lucky to have a place like this, it’s amazing”. Then stuck out his hand to shake mine.
It was like shaking hands with someone that was wearing a catchers mitt. I said something like it was great to meet him.
He walked away. I found out later he was in Boston for a mandatory psych evaluation after he bit Holyfield.
Sorry for being long however there are 2 types of people in this world. Those that can teach and those that can’t. Yes Tyson did not handle the upper echelon of champions, ie Lewis, Holyfield. Yes Tyson destroyed 35 or 40 guys who were shaking in their boots.. But there was another smaller group maybe 5 or 6 guys who gave Tyson a competitive fight. And Tyson did not get frustrated, did not foul out of the fight, he went on to win those fights where the guy was putting up a bit of a challenge. Some of his decent wins against decent fighters are not given enough credit IMO. Thats basically what I am saying.

Dennis Moore Tyson fought a bunch of below average fighters in the 80s. When it comes to the best fighters of his generation like Holyfield and Lewis he lost. Once he knew he couldn’t knock em out he folded, like a bully getting punched back.

Granted Tyson wasn't at his best when he fought the but I believe they both could've beat him in his prime. He certainly wasn't unbeatable.

My father was a writer for many years with Sports Illustrated. He first met Cus in the 1950’s and became very good friends with him. They talked all the time. Shortly after Cus first got Mike into the ring , Cus called my dad and said that he has a 13 year old kid who will end up being the youngest heavyweight of all time. Cus was 100 percent convinced. Cus also thought that Mike could end up being the greatest of all time but he said that there were too many variables to make that claim.
Here is my view on what happened with Mike. He loved and worshipped Cus. And Mike also liked and respected greatly his manager, Jimmy Jacobs. Mike ended up losing Cus and Jimmy at a young age (21). Jimmy and Cus (especially Cus) could tell Mike what to do and he would do it. Without either one of them around, the limit to which Mike would listen to his trainers diminished over time. To a degree he became uncontrollable and unteachable and that became his downfall. That does not mean I don’t respect what Mike achieved. But I do think that if Cus had lived a longer life Mike would have achieved even more.

OK, Teddy duly noted and understood. It’s a well stated explanation from someone with experience. Another additional point is that all the other champions at the time were able to watch Mike ascend to a heavyweight title. They could assimilate his style over the years and prepare to fight Mike by dissecting his style of success. Lennox Lewis was just waiting to dissect and utilize the strategy advantage that he clearly had with his size and skill. It’s possible no fighter was better prepared than Buster Douglas, physically and mentally, in his match against Mike in Japan. Lennox displayed a very similar strategy and skill later on.
At 19 and 20 years old, Mike would have likely beat both of them. Mike showed flashes of previous greatness after jail. What could’ve been? Mike entrapped himself unfortunately. Mike missed out on 3 years of fighting and training at his best. Oh well, stuff happens. Mike has more than bounced back in life, “The Biggest Fight”. Those lost years were at the prime physical age of 25 to 28 years old, all that time lost out of the fight game. Problems, Court and stress , Mike lost more than 3 prime years. This IMO.
I agree. The original Tyson was invincible. So invincible, he took Douglas for granted. After leaving Kevin Rooney and teaming up with Don King and trainer Aaron Snow he took a downshift in his ability. Tyson no longer moved quite the same. After his prison sentence, Tyson, although a threat, was no longer the highly skilled somewhat smaller fighter he was in his prior reign. Tyson was still (somewhat) good in his muscle memory after prison, but he was not as great a fighter as he was in his initial appearance on the stage. Even though I have great respect for Hollyfield and Lennox Lewis, IMHO, the original Tyson would have defeated both of these fighters with KOs.
Those early Tyson fights, his speed, footwork, and defense were just on another level than any of his post 80's fights.

I respect how truthful and sincere Teddy is being here. I think Mike is the person now that he should have been before, but became it after it was too late.
And that's the tragedy of it...
It's almost as if while watching Teddy talk you can see in his minds eye, in those moments he's not talking to Joe, he's talking directly to Tyson. He knows he's finally saying it publicly. I'm sure it's something Teddy tried really hard throughout those years to instill in Mike, in his own way, but never could. He was choosing his words really carefully. And it hit a serious nerve. It also appears, Teddy and Cus, were at odds about this. Maybe Teddy wasn't ever given a real chance to instill it into Tyson as per Cus's fears that Tyson would quit and leave.
I think Mike Tyson became the man after his Boxing career. He is a living legend. He overcame his own faults.

Teddy is spot on when it came to Mikes career as a boxer. Teddy wasn’t taking away from Mikes physical greatness as an athlete, but it takes more than having physical greatness to be a great champion. And Mike didn’t have the other part of what makes a great champion great, and that’s heart. What drove Mike was rage, not heart, rage only lasts so long. But I will say Mike has now become “that man” who has endured and overcome adversity not with rage but with heart. I admire Mike now more than I did watching him in his prime as a boxer. Mike now is a great champion in life! God bless him.

Went bankrupt less than a year after his last win in the ring.
