Cassowary territorial rumbling.

- The cassowary makes many different displays and sounds of communication during its cycle of mating, parenting and maintaining distance with other birds.
This video shows a large young female bird letting others know this is it's territory. It gradually inflated its whole head, neck and wattles before bowing over as shown to force the air out making the long low vibrating sound. This sound can travel very long distances in the rainforest.
I have only seen females make this long continuous sound and usually when another female is in the vicinity although both males and females make the same sound broken up into series of three or four rumblings to alert other birds of the presence as they move around the landscape and to avoid aggressive interaction.
An amazing experience to witness. The sound is so low apparently some of the range is inaudible to humans. This recording on an iphone doesn't come anywhere near the actual sound but does show the effort put into making it.
This is clearly a dinosaur.
Theropods are birds, technically... hah...
Paradox Invader Then you would have to give a narrow definition of what a dinosaur actually was, instead of giving them to lay persons...
No solution at all other wise a common language with which people are used to communicating with each other
Nathan Bongertman Terms are established by way of accumulated scientific evidence-based theories which they themselves EVOLVED all the time...
Song Song nigga this started as a comedic statement. Stop bringing science
Imagine T-rex rumbling like this but 20 times louder
Look up Saurian Game Tyrannosaurus. It does this precisely
Well have you seen the article on how they figured out what they think Tyrannosaurus might have sounded like? It's very similar to this.
Tyrannosaurus most likely sounded like penguins
It's kinda weird
AS gamingHD nah
100 times dude...
Why does Australia need to continue supplying the earth with terrifying creatures?
Because we like it! It makes us feel bad*ss for surviving all the snakes and cassowaries and all dem cute critters
nah this animal also naturally exist in other country too
asdfghjkl zxcvbnm they are in Papua New Guinnea as well, but most of the population of cassowaries live in Queensland, Australia.
Yeah, especially those drop-bears. ;)
I am Australian mate so shut up. about our country ya jerk
That's insane how much bass comes from that bird.
You should listen to the T-Rex.
th-cam.com/video/SpO_ov2iWyI/w-d-xo.html
Closed mouth vocalization
The pitch of the Cassowary's call is around 23 Hertz, which is below my hearing range. If you're like me and can't hear anything, try playing the video back at double speed. This will increase the pitch and possibly make the call audible to you (it worked for me!)
EDIT: a few helpful commenters have said that TH-cam’s speed adjustment doesn’t affect audio pitch. Speeding up the video may still be helpful to you, as it makes the sound happen “faster” so it’s easier to pick out the long, low, drawn-out sound above the background noise. Of course, wearing good-quality earbuds can also help.
Joshua Cook thank you I thought I was going crazy seeing that everyone else heard it
Joshua fantastic suggestion thank you !!!
So *THAT'S* why everyone else says they hear it, but I can't hear anything in the video!
I tried it but it's not working for me. Am I just, like, deaf or something?
The Waffle Bunny yeah same here,i remember hearing the sound in this video a while back but now i can't anymore, maybe my hearing got fucked up over time
Shit sounds like it's charging up a spirit bomb
It's making that deep sound?! Yegads, that's freaking terrifying!
Lady, you can have whatever territory you want. Just don't kill me!
Isn’t that a male bird? Female birds don’t have such brightly colored hats
dougspidermanhappy you missed the point
dougspidermanhappy It’s a female. They are bigger and own the territories.
@@dougspidermanhappy no the juveniles are brown females are bigger and even brighter in color with taller crest and they are more territorial
@@dougspidermanhappy bro all cassowarries are that color
I love how we go from an ominous powerful rumble to clumsy licking and grooming noises
The rumbling coming from the cassowary is similar to what is thought the t-rex sounded like
Indeed. In fact it turns out the T rex didn't even roar nor did it open its mouth alot.
I can't think of a better sound for the T-rex😨
We will never know the truth.
But the Trex on TH-cam could emit a sound like that, But louder.
Omg what r u doing here I'm subscribed
For those having trouble hearing it, 0:55 has a low rumble. It isn’t an aircraft going overhead, that’s the Cassowary.
“Clever Girl”. 😍
That doesn’t look very scary! More like a six foot turkey. 😂

Amazing. Notice how the she took in so much air that her feathers protruded all over her body. After that haunting call, she preened to get her feathers put back in place neatly--must look nice when the male comes to call! Imagine hearing that call while you're camping, far from civilization--better than any ghost story around the camp fire! Thank you for sharing that!
The sound is VERY low. You cant hear it without headphones so i doubt humans will be able to hear it.
@@veinfish It's just about 3 hrtz above what we can hear. So just barely audible within our hearing range, it's just that our phone speakers can't go that low😂
@@veinfish u can feel the vibrations tho
Eventually by protruding their feather and vibrating at the same time they make their parasites fall ?
Her? I think she's a male
It took me awhile to realize THAT noise was coming from the bird and not some plane. Absolutely fascinating.
Yes. That's a dinosaur.
All birds are dinosaurs
@@pulquegc *looks down at fried chicken with gravy*
@@danielawesome36 xD
@@pulquegc not really. Most of the birds evolutionized, too. To be claimed the dinosaur-like the animal most be touched by evolution as little as possible
@@nikitazogas3676 i know, but birds are avian dinosaurs.
I put this on my 6 woofer surround sound system and woke up my roommate thinking there's an earthquake!
It has sense. Earthquake produce low frequencies like in the video
That sounds nothing like a bird. Terrifying.
It sounds exactly like a bird. Think about what sounds birds make. The larger the bird, the deeper the sound.
I mean if a baby elephant seal can sound like a full grown 86 year old man that mentally disabled then a bird can these sounds lol
@@KurNorock damn imagine the sound giant theropods
Terror bird
Dude, I wanna know what it sounds like but I can't hear anything even with everything at max volume, so weird
imagine walking in wilderness and hearing this sound on a dark night.

A sound like that, you could probably feel it too.

Absolutely incredible. I can't believe what I'm hearing.
Its amazing to watch TripedalTroductions. Their neck and wattles have lots of air sacks that they 'blow up' then force the air out to make this rumbling sound. Bit like playing the bagpipes. lol. This was taken on an iPhone which doesn't capture some of the low frequencies.
Can't believe what I can't hear...Jesus everyone can hear it but me
@@Carpatouille as other comments say the sound is at 23HZ. average minimum hearing range is 20HZ. Some of us are unable to hear it, me too. Others definetely heard it though.
@@monarchmeow9256 I tried listening with headphones and it worked, so you were right
@@Carpatouille Put headphones on and be absolutely flabbergasted. I'm sorry but how can we call this thing a BIRD after that? Like seriously...
No but seriously this is the most fucking terrifying sound I’ve ever heard from an animal. Can you imagine hearing this in the middle of a forest having no clue what the source was, only to see this fuckin’ massive bird. Oh my god I’d die
Even worse, this is similar to what they now believe t-rexs sounded like. More of a bellow than a roar. There are quite a few simulated audios out there and it’s awful. Imagine dying after hearing that sound.
That does sound like quite a terrifying scenario
@@madisonmorris7394 Yeah I've heard some of those accurate T-Rex sound recreations, and those are probably some of the most ominous and sinister sounds I've ever heard. Even more horrifying when you take into account that some dinosaurs had to be alone in a forest with that monster
At that low frequency, it sounds like the deepest thunder rolling in, incredible
These -birds- dinosaurs are equally fascinating and terrifying
I'm using earbuds, but I literally couldn't hear it unless I turned my sound all the way up and shoved my earbuds into my ear canals. Animals are amazing.
Did you try playing it at half speed? Creepy.
damn my hearing range is pretty good and even if I couldn't hear it I still feel the "atmosphere" change
I cranked up the bass on my sound system and I was like "I still don't hear anything!" then @00:48 happed.. 😱😱😱😱That was AWESOME!! lol what an incredible bird!!
Ah, yes, the tourist murder bird.
And thats the sound of T-Rex.
Considering how both birds and the T-Rex are therapods and thus very closely related it's not entirely unfeasible that the T-Rex could emit a similar sound. Just way louder and probably more terrifying.
@@Khenfu_Cake I would actually imagine it would be stronger, more potent so to speak. Like you could feel it in your bones....
@@wisemankugelmemicus1701 Most likely, yeah. Probably felt like thunder in the ground too.
@@Khenfu_Cake mhm
im highly supportive of the thought that dinos utilised closed mouth vocalization,,, this sound at 20(?)x volume (or at least being so low that you'd feel it in your bones) being emitted from a massive 9 ton carnivorous theropod is much more terrifying than the screamish roars and guttural growls we've had to grow up with
the more I learn about cassowaries the more they prove themselves to be modern day dinosaurs, like how this fella just imitated what the t-rex sounded like
WTF was that. I'm specifically classifying this animal as a dinosaur. That's a really scary sound.
It's pretty amazing to see Mictlantecuhtli, especially up close like this. They direct the sound to warn another bird in the vicinity. As you can see she walked passed me without any interest while I was filming. Mostly you can only hear this sound from a distance which is easily confused with general suburban noises. It sounds like a truck driving in the distance. This is how they communicate to move around the landscape avoiding altercation.
well, it really is a dinosaur. all birds are highly derived, modern theropod dinosaurs. or, for non-scientists, very specialized two-legged carnivorous dinosaurs like t-rex and velociraptor. :/
My Chemical Romance X
:/:\:/:\:
The sound it uses is called infrasound a sound you can't hear, but feel..
It is a dinosaur.
Run now! It's clever girl!
A Cassowary is practically a Dinosaur
its literally a Dinosaur, like all birds
this is probably the longest rumble i've heard so far. (also kinda neat as a bass test and scary at the same time)
although this is a dangerous bird, i really think we need to protect it at all costs.
i mean. this bird has lineage to dinos, like what!?
that rumbling is crazy. I can only just hear it and the last thing I would expect is that it would come from a bird of all animals that I can only imagine what it’d be like to hear in a forest. Truly an amazing creature.
Well, that´s absolutely scary, those extremely low rumbles...damn, I would have shat my pants
But it´s extremely interesting to see (and hear), thank you for the video
I heard no rumbling at all...Till I used headphones. Sounds like an earthquake. Creepy.
It sounds like what you expect a purring demon to sound like
fabulous vocalisation really appreciate the opportunity to hear this unusual bird, who is "doing it tough" due to fragmentation and destruction of it's habitat, thanks to mision beach cassowaries for their capture and efforts to help this amazing bird
I would have never imagined that a bird could emit such deep noises
0:44 for the people who are wondering when it makes the rumble
And if u still csnt hear it put it on 2× speed
@@tomatenkrabben i can still barely hear it lol
@@matt4280 You need to put headphones on.
I couldn't hear it at all but my dog freaked out when I played this.
Is nobody gonna talk about the weird sound it made right after when it had an itch 🤣🤣🤣
That weird sound is actually another bird Merciless Thunder.
Oh hell no... I just watched this wearing decent headphones and forgetting that my EQ was bass-boosted from watching Coachella live-stream... That was pretty damn intense lol
yess i heard that low deep voice too! Back then when im in the zoo, but my family doesnt believe that low bass sound come from her, such a beautiful creatures!
I can't hear a thing. I'll bet you can feel it standing that close though.
Put some headphones on. 0:52
It’s likely out of your hearing range, then. Try playing it back at 2x speed, it’ll increase the pitch.
That is so cool how you got up close to that cassowary, without getting killed.
It could be argued that large, predacious theropods used booming like this as there are many organisms that simply can't hear frequencies this low. It's sort of like a stealth call.
That's insane. That's some prehistoric sound right there.
0:47 here, volume all the way up,headphones and 2x speed,You can clearly hear it.
Oh My God cassowary HAVE SUBWOOFER 🔊 BASS
That was amazing!😮
coolest fucking bird ever
cassowary remind me of oviraptors.
mother nature and mother Earth never cease to amaze me always something new to learn about it I wish my ears could hear the real sound of that it's so low pitched it's hard to hear
I don't know which is more terrifying, the fact that humans will most likely be unable to hear that calling and never see it coming or the sound itself
I'm gonna have to rewatch this through some proper speakers it seems.
EDIT: haha wow - starts about 0:47 and ends about 1:05, just one long drone. You can even see its chest vibrating!
If you don't have some subs or good headphones, you will not hear it.
The world needs more Cassowaries. It just does.
You don't need to go back to prehistoric times to find dinosaurs. They're right here, and they're called cassowaries!
Astounding. Sounds like a silent engine.
I can't even hear it and that makes it infinitely more terrifying
holy hell, I had to doublecheck that my house wasn't shaking! o.o
Australia....a magical land where even the chickens are serial killers.
It’s the cassowary’s world, we’re just living in it
It sounds similar to an t-Rex, with the almost impossible to hear sounds but yet you can feel the sound, terrifying.
Holy shit. This thing is 1.5m tall. Imagine the sounds that 4,5 or 10m dinosaurs were making
Beautiful and utterly terrifying. They are notoriously aggressive and dangerous. What an amazing creature!❤
Man that sound is just eerie
That's insane! Pretty scary too
The tumbling starts at 0:47 . I'm 46 years old and it's out of range for my hearing on my Samsung s23 ultra, so I put my headphones on and you can definitely hear it. I heard this in person, and it's terrifying. It shook my chest, and I was in a cargo van 15 ft away.
NOOOOOOPE! That warning was enough for me! That call right there was a cross between, “I wish a muthafucka would try to get closer to me or my babies!” & “Try Jesus, don’t try me. I throw hands” #LEAVEITALONE
It is probably because I am listening to headphones through the monitor instead of on my speakers at home, or my hearing is shot, but I couldn't hear anything :(
Actually is borderline unaudible for humans, its just 23 hertz and human hearing is 20 Hz minimum audible. some punished eardrums cant hear it at all.
Its not very audible using a small speaker but even on a cheap set of speakers with a subwoofer you can feel the vibration and hear the sound quite clearly.
It sounds like a deep engine/motor idling almost
try "Ms Cass rumbling" I could hear that one better
0:44
It's litteraly standing here menacingly ゴ ゴ ゴ ゴ
I put earbud’s in in order to hear this and I’m not kidding you when I say that this sound actually made the buds loosen in my own ear
I didn’t hear anything...until I put my headphones on. It sounds like distant thunder!
Had one of these growling at me when I visited the zoo. Scary bugger!
He's trying to make an EARTHQUAKE!
They now think T-Rex did this Rumbling too, but a lot louder.
These things can easily be over 6 feet tall, by the way...
7 foot+
They are such wonderful, beautiful creatures
Incredible! It almost sounds like a subwoofer producing a special effect on a movie
Holy fuck sounds like a trex growl well atleast that's what i expect trex to sound like lol
I thought there was a motorcycle passing outside the building...nope, it's the bird!
That is incredibly beautiful
You can tell this tickles the cassowaries, hence why they stop to scratch the itchy spot from the rumbling.
Its like a ostrich joined the dark side.
When I heard it start to rumble I almost expected it to start making the THX theme sound LMAO. Bird syrinxes are cool.
Neat video! Thanks for uploading!
australia birb = subwoofer
He’s like “eh bruh get the fuck outta my way before I chuck Norris roundhouse kick yo shit”
It is beautiful and fascinating to me!
The call is at around 0:45-1:05. You may need to connect decent headphones to hear it, since the frequency is too low for many cheap speakers and smartphones.
My phone wouldn't play that frequency on its own but somehow earphones helped?
That rumbling sounded great on my Sennheiser Hd598 headphones
It sounds like when you stop right next to a motorcycle at the red light, just for comparison if you can’t hear.
Thats no bird. That a freaking Dinosaur. Man i heard nothing with my phone so i connected my jbl flip3 and man its so terrifying
It is a bird because birds are dinosaurs
And I feel like you know that now and you are gonna tell me
0:48: let’s be scary!
