    I am watching this a year after publication, but I just ordered my OV Fortius 2P tent. I am so excited as a recent convert to trekking pole tents. I am thru-hiking the Florida Trail in 2 weeks, so I am concerned with thunderstorms and wind, as we frequently see in FL. This tent gives me a lot of confidence to weather out storms. I also like the offset trekking pole design, it should provide more room in the tent. I haven't been disappointed by any of the OV gear I have purchased and used. • @thetaysonwhittaker
      @thetaysonwhittaker 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      SilNylon is more durable. That was the single biggest reason to go this way. When using ultralight fabrics, strength is key. Typically polyester is cheaper than nylon, it wasn't about saving any money...

    • @diversie509
      @diversie509 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@thetaysonwhittaker When wet, Nylon weakens considerably because of it being hydrophilic - water actually enters between the fibers stretching the bonds (this also makes it take eons to dry and makes it heavy after getting wet).
      Dupont, who makes both commonly used silnylon and silpoly fabrics, have shown that while silnylon is technically stronger, it is only stronger by 1% in tensile strength while dry (the while dry part is crucially important). Beyond that, silpoly withstands UV wayyyy better than nylon does. Nylon can lose 8% of its strength in just 2 days of sun exposure, while silpoly is naturally UV resistant.
      At the end of the day, if you hike in a place that will not rain or snow, has 0% humidity, and doesn't have any sun exposure while not caring about the recyclability of the material, Silnylon is the winner... by 1%, for anything else, Silpoly is vastly superior.
      I admit I don't frequently purchase the two materials simultaneously, so I cant speak to costs, but if the #1 reason for choosing nylon was because nylon is supposedly "more durable" the research into materials seriously missed the mark.

    • @thetaysonwhittaker
      @thetaysonwhittaker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@diversie509 while Brigham our designer would be a lot more adapted answering this, I'll be sure to discuss it with him. It does sound like an interesting study. However, I still think there are a lot more studies out there. Showcasing nylons improved strength and durability. That being said, I'll be diving into finding this article and doing some more additional research on it. Form my experience, some articles can really highlight specific strengths rather than all encompassing strengths, an example of that would be with Dyneema fabrics. I appreciate your comments, we are always seeking to improve!

      I own the explorer 4000. It's comfortable, has pockets, weighs 5 pounds, and is more for 30-45 pound carries. If you can get your backpack weight down to 25 pounds or lighter, I would carry a frameless backpack such as the 3F UL which is 1 pound 14 ounce, or HMG, or many other lightweight frameless packs. cheers

    A lot of similarity between this and the Lanshan Pro (1P and 2P with the double vestibules). Similar half door, pole setup, sizes, silnylon (not the preferable silpoly however), guying out and weights, though not a similar price however - and the Lanshan 2 double wall is cheaper and even better IMHO, especially now I've made a few customisations ! However I still much prefer the Durston Xmid-2 which is still the dog's b$%^*^ks.

    1.625 lbs or 26 oz, and I'm wondering if that's WITH or WITHOUT the pegs....obviously doesn't include the weight of a carbon fiber pole yet or the weight of the poles besides....which all count...., and how much hardware, is the main question.....DETAILS, we need ALL the details.... are the stakes you're using lighter than Becker's normal Groundhog Stakes? Why don't they follow Becker's recommended Groundhog Stakes? Are those Outdoor Vitals Stakes?..lol....gram weenies count.....gram weenies matter..... Nice rainbow Becker.... I approve of both the Rainbow and the price of the tent....not sure on functionality and I'll weigh in on my opinion when all independent gear reviews are in on the tent....till then I'm sticking with my tried, tested and true one man, so far.....as why change what I know works perfectly for me....BUT I'm always open to new gear reviews and watch them intensely.....

    • @DanBecker
      @DanBecker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! It is 26 ounces with the outdoor vitals steaks and guy lines. They give just the standard cheap stake with the tent. The ones you saw in the video were Tayson‘s personal stakes he uses on his tents.

    If it's all about the weight why would you bring trekking poles? Aren't ultralight tent poles lighter than ultralight trekking poles? Trekking poles are only useful for long through hikes IMO. Example, you guys are just chilling in the woods fishing. You don't need trekking poles for these 1-3 night trips I always see on youtube. They're for trekking, it looked you guys were fishing.

    • @benjaminc4717
      @benjaminc4717 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hiking with poles is a better experience for many people as it takes strain off the feet and legs when ascending/descending by spreading the weight and balance across 4 limbs and their joints instead of two while adding stability, as well as some other less significant benefits, everyone i know who's tried them doesn't go back. since many people would be bringing them regardless of their tent choice, so tents have been designed around them.
      but if they aint for you, you can just use carbon tent poles.

    • @diversie509
      @diversie509 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd agree, but you don't really need to worry about going ultralight on a 2 night trip period. The people that benefit the most from ultralight (30+ miles and multiple days) are the same crowd who would be using trekking poles so I think the decision makes sense - especially if they eventually offer the tent poles with it.
