Honestly my headcanon for the whole I am Groot thing is that he really is just saying three words over and over but by using inflection is capable of communicating the entirety of their language just like saying the word "dude" in various ways allows you to communicate a wide variety of Concepts.

you know, i just thought of he idea of expanding that monarch groot lie into an entire story. what if it was less of a lie, either with him eventually coming to power (maybe due to his vocal upgrade allowing him to be a better emissary for his species), or with a small retcon to his backstory that he was the son of the leader of a feuding faction, born and raised with no knowledge of his home faction. the latter would also be able to give an explanation as to why he was the only one to respect the forest creatures; he is the last survivor of the original ruling faction with the same ideals.

after civil war 2 the guardians were stranded on earth and there was this one issue of the comic just focused on groot doing stuff on earth and it was very kids storybook like and there was this one line, "groot's skin is made of wood, and his heart is full of love" and i think abt it all the time. When I was in High School in 1987 I created and drew a 7 foot tall plant life controlling viney superhero that I named "Drook". I had never heard of or seen Groot previously. Weird coincidence.

My guess is that on top of a human-like vocal track, they have other dense high-frequency shit going on, and when they speak they end up making *some* sound on normal spectrum, so they usually just go with a stock phrase. The alternative would just be making "uuuuhhh" sounds while communicating which sounds weird to aliens.

Nope. Young Flora Colossi have been shown to still speak in "I am Groot" which you can explicitly see in the section in the video of Groot's early life.

for groots language i think in one of the avengers cartoons vision explained it and even communicated with groot.
he explained that the i am groot part is arbitrary.. it is a sort of carrier wave for the vibrations put in there..

Ok so I was just reading my Annihilation Conquest Omnibus and got to the part where Groot suddenly stops talking. So I looked up this video to try and get an explanation. But being as they never properly addressed it Im begining to come up with my own theory. I think maybe when he was first with the group he had a translator like almost every other sentient creature that does business in Marvels cosmic areas. But at some point he stopped using it or maybe we just stopped getting the translation for one reason or another. But thats just a theory.
I'm gonna assume that Rocket has "I am groot" carved into his skin under his fur as punishment

My thought with the I am Groot bit (bearing in mind that my experience is with the movies, not the comics) was that Groot's language was likely in a frequency that most humanoid creatures weren't able to hear/understand. Likely a low frequency, like how elephants communicate in frequencies too low for the human ear to hear. Hence why Rocket, as a raccoon-creature, would be able to understand Groot, since he would have access to a range of sound that a human would not. This is, of course, assuming that the majority of alien races in the galaxy also can't hear in that range. But, I mean, most of them have mostly human looking ears, so I'm gonna go ahead with that assumption. So the "I am Groot" and "We are Groot" that we hear in the movie, is just Groot straining his voice to the highest pitch he is capable of speaking, and that's all he knows how to effectively enunciate. As anyone who has tried to sing a high note that is way outside their natural range can attest, you really can only strain so much. I am Groot is probably just the easiest thing to say in different tones to try and get his point across.
This leads well into the fact that other crewmates than Rocket seem to be able to understand Groot once they have spent enough time around him. Humans can't hear super low frequencies but (as I am sure the other nerds reading this already know) they are still affected by low frequencies sounds, or infrasound. You most often hear about this in regards to horror movies, and the fact that the movies will often have infrasound tracks built in because we still have a reaction to it even though we can't discern it. It can make people feel uneasy and freaked out, so it's added to horror movies to make them seem scarier. (I actually have no idea if this is actually done, but that's the rumour.) So, theoretically, you might eventually learn to discern the weird sensations that hearing Groot speak gave you, and that would let you understand him properly in time. Particularly if Rocket is assisting translation.

i feel like its not impossible for groot to speak short words in English but incredibly difficult and uncomfortable kinda like how a orca whale was able to learn to say hello but not very well he clearly understands English but i think its just very hard to say anything other than i am groot but since he knows English its possible for him to make some sounds like we and you but only important situations like when he died in guardians of the galaxy
