Have mine now for about 3 weeks. Love it. Planning to put the 15 tooth front sprocket on. In the manual it actually clearly says not for heavy off road use only for gravel roads. So amazed why people keep saying its not good at off road and complain when it was not even designed for heavy off road.
You are spot on. This bike is good for some nice gravel trails but it can do more if you do have the skill I think. That 15 tooth is a great option and I might look at doing that too some time. Keep well and enjoy your bike. Also have a great festive season.
I like your videos on the Scrambler, i found your channel just as i ordered my Black Scrambler in April. I picked up my bike two weeks ago and have now clocked 250 odd miles on it, really liking this bike it's great on the back roads as well around here in Somerset. I have fitted the Triumph mudguard extension, the Powerbronze mud deflector and a Speedo Angels screen protector. I have ridden several late nights and have found that the lights do illuminate the road but i find the main beam a little dim compared to my Gold Stars halogen bulb, one thing i did notice was the speedo needle illuminates in the dark just like on my old Street Twin. keep it up.
Awesome thanks for the feedback. Glad you are liking the bike. Its just a great easy going bike and triumph do get this right with so many of their bikes. I have seen a few guys do a total black out with the black tank one and it really looks very nice, that is if you into stuff like that. Enjoy the bike and hope you smash out the miles to get to the first service. Then the you dont have to worry anymore keeping it under the 8k rpm. Keep well and now we just need to hope it stops raining lol
So from someone that's put over 5k miles on his 400x I ran my Karoo streets at the listed pressures, 1.8 on the front 2.3 on the rear, interestingly when I picked the bike up both front and rear were at 2.3 bar, this made the front feel quite punchy through the bars, I did change out the Karoo's at 4.5k for a set of Dunlop Raids, for more off-road grip, much better on the trails but it does take away some of the brilliant road holding of the stock tyres, Dunlop have advised me that I can run the Raids at+ - 7psi on the rear and+ - 5psi on the front. The more aggressive tyres are a little more noisy but not unobtrusively and will no doubt drag the mileage per gallon down, but I'm almost at 200 miles range even with a little bit of offroading thrown in, and I'd swap out the levers for 3 finger and replace the handguards for ally reinforced for when its inevitably dropped.
Awesome and thank you very much for the feedback. Yes I am looking for a few upgrades here and there and waiting on stock to arrive. I am also getting the front disc sorted begining of Aug. Massive wait to get a slot to get this done. But so far really enjoying the bike I just wish the weather in the UK would sort it out. Dont mind riding in the rain but not all the time. lol
Prepare to change also the handlebar. Mine bent on a ultra low speed fall. That also made my brake lever a 3 finger on for free! The foot break pedal also bent. Cheap parts that need to be upgraded for off road use
A great review! Happy New Year to you & your family! Gosh, you remind me of Peter Fouche. South African lived in the UK & died supporting Ukraine, most unfortunately. Thanks for your time & report. All the best in 2025⭐
I love the gearing on the 400x. It is just right for adventure riding on dirt forest service roads. I hauled my wife over rough, rocky roads on my 400x Scrambler. It traveled through the terrain very well.
Cheers for the feedback. Yes I dont have a problem with it but its just something to mention as its totally different to any other bike I have ridden. Glad you having some fun on the 400X.
I bought my 400x about a month ago (mid June 2024) I have put the first 500 miles on it and it is a super fun bike to ride. If I had one complaint about it it is the 1st gear. Starting from a stop, you have to shift into second just after letting the clutch all the way out, this may be useful for off road but I have not done a bunch of that yet. Also going from first to second gear, I accidently land in neutral more often than I care to admit but I hope it is more me than the way the bike is set up. Other than this it is a great bike, fun to ride, looks good and feels great on the road. Enjoyed your review, keep safe out there scrambler friend.
Great and glad you are liking the bike. You might just need to adjust the shift leaver on setting up so you get more movement from 1st to second. On the short 1st gear.. the guys use the Speed 400's gear on the front and replace it with the one on the 400X and this sorts out the short 1st gear. But I agree if you not going to be doing much super slow riding then changing that front sprocket might be the way to go. Thanks for the feedback and enjoy getting the first service out the way.
This is correct the Duke 390 one is more freely availible compared to the Triumphs Speed 400's one so the fit that one. Thanks for the tip @krisgarcia4452
Great video, I’ve just bought one , but can’t collect for a few weeks ( had a hip replaced yesterday). So I’m watching every video out there, and yours is probably the best so far. 👍
That is the best way to make the time go by. Hope the hip heals quick and you can get some riding in when the weather is still good. Its really such a great and easy to ride bike. Keep well and keep me posted when you do get it and how you are finding it.
Great thank you for the feedback. I must say I am a fan of the Triumph sound. As much as I like Honda I was a bit annoyed that my Honda GROM's paint is already flaking off after 600 miles. But this Honda looks really nice. If I where you I would see if you can go and sit and maybe test ride the two. Keep me posted on what you go for. All I can say I am super happy with the bang for buck on the Scam 400X and how easy it is to ride and the good sound and looks. Good luck for the hunt of the new bike.
Actually quite informative. I am going to ask e very insignificant question, 😃but do you have any protection on your tank, to stop from scratches? I have the same and just had ny 1st 1000k service
This is a good questions, I do not. I must say I very rarely lean over and my jacket does not have any zips that can scratch it. But there is a tank pad that you can fit direct from the website but I am going to hold off for now. What some guys do and I would think this works the best is to get a 3M tank wrap that is like PPF coating on the tank then you are covered for any scratches. But the matt paint does look like it will show marks easier than the shiny black or red. Thanks for the comment.
Very cool video of the Scrambler. I am thinking about ordering one for me and it would be my first one. Do you think it will suite good for everyday ride? I am 6'4 tall btw.
I would think so. Its such an easy bike to ride and its tall enough for most people. Best to do is to see if you can go to a dealer and sit on one. You are tall and from the seat to the pegs might make it too cramped but its best to go and sit on one.
I just picked up my 400x 3 weeks ago, taught myself to ride on gravel near my house, then took the MSF course in ABQ last week. I have #10 400x sold in NM according to Bob at Motopia supposedly...
Excellent video. I really enjoyed listening to your reasoning for eliminating the T7 and going with the Triumph. I'm in the same boat. My V-Strom is just too big and heavy (and especially top heavy) for my aging body and it's not an appropriate bike for the mountain dirt roads here in Ecuador. I think the Triumph will handle these roads just fine. Appreciate your very favorable review of the bike.
That is awesome and thank you for the feedback. Yes as much as I would like a BMW GS and some of the bigger bikes it just does not work for me currently. This is a well priced good looking machine that is easy to ride and drop some more off road bias tyres on there and you are really good to go. Yes its not going to be a KTM390 but it covers a good range and abilities.
Nice video man! Do you think that starting out of the second gear would be a good option for normal road use, or do you think that would be too hard on the clutch?
I have been short shifting the first gear and it just takes a bit of time to get use to. I am also looking at swapping the front gear for the one on the Speed to give it a bit longer gear. I dont really need super slow speed for the 10% off roading I am going to be doing. That is if I can find gravel trails to ride here in the UK. Thanks for the feedback.
Any comment on vibrations? My mirrors are vibrating at about 8000 rpm, but it´s not an issue that i feel in my hands at all. BTW others have reported that riding with a pillion is very good also for a grown up. Nice comments through out - I also have the issue with the front brake, and I don´t even have a disc lock. I agree, that delivery of spare parts is a problem, I ordered a top box with the bike and don´t know when I can get it... Done 4000 km on my 400x since end of March.
Yes agree I actually forgot to add in that note. Up to 75mph I can see find in the mirrors but anything over that its a blur. But I do not get any vibrations via the pegs or handlebars so that is good. I think the little fly screen would also help a bit with wind blast on the motorway but then again its all on how you going to be riding the bike. Yes I had the feedback earlier in the week that they can reuse the old nuts for the disc so the bike is now booked in for the 3rd Aug. I am a bit concerned about the slow spares and parts we have to wait for. Usually they are very good with having it all ready. It almost feels to me that they did not think its going to be such a big seller and was cought off guard with the whole indian market and then the rest of the world. Hope you get the top box sorted this is on my list too.
Boom this is what I am seeing too. I am waiting on the spares to arrive and then a slot for them to install it. I had to wait almost 2 months just to get word about the warped disc lol. Thanks for the comment.
I am getting 225 miles per tank so far, about 63 mpg at only 400 miles so far. Will ride Friday- Monday this weekend to hit 600 for my appointment next Thursday for first service. So far it's been amazing, but then, this is my first bike. Other thoughts, foot pegs are too small for my feet, will look for bigger ones as I am size 11 US or 43 Euro. Suspension has been great, no bottoming out. First gear is too low, have a 15T ordered, waiting delivery from UK, I am in New Mexico. I think the exhaust sounds great, as does my lady. Plan on getting a small windscreen from dart to help with wind on the highway, very tiring. The rear brake is weak AF. tried to skid o gravel, NOPE! Yes, I was in off road mode. Tires aren't great on gravel, get a lot of rocks stuck in the tread and in the (very low clearance) fender! UGH! Very much enjoying this bike otherwise...
All great feedback and I do agree with the screen to keep the wind off the chest. The tyres are good for the smooth gravel we get here but as you say when it becomes more stony you would need a bit more knoblies. Everyone raves about the Trailmax tyres but dont know if they have something for the Scram. Enjoy the new bike and the riding and thanks for the comment.
You are spot on this this. More and more people are looking for lighter bike but are also able to do a bit of motorway miles with some comfort. Here in the UK the speed limits are getting slower and more and more roadworks drop it down to 50mph so no real need for a massive liter bike. Thanks for the comment
Also what I have found is that the bigger the bikes now the more they want to charge up and this is driving me nuts but this is where the smaller bikes makes for some fresh air. But a nice big engine bike is great to ride.

Cheers for the feedback. Weird that they are taking this long. The dealer did say that they received the disc and pads but not the bolts. They where waiting on confirmation if they need new bolts. The answer was no so they can go ahead and fit the disc and pads and reuse the current bolts. Check with your dealer, they might be in the same boat.
Cheers for the feedback. Oh yes I still have it and its still going strong. Its a solid one and its got the free supercharging for life so would be a mistake to get rid of it. Still drives like a dream really. Thanks for the comment and I hope you are doing well.
