Canards were a bad move. Would have been better to keep the original YF-23 design and give those large pivoting tail fins the ability to flatten out on take off to provide extra lift. This extra vector of movement would have also given the plane even more agility and manouverability and even allow for vertical alignment like the F-15 which I believe would allow for more stability during super cruise. No need to change anything from Air force to Navy. Give me the trillion dollar contract. I'll fix it.

Theres a few reasons, alot of weird little ones to, like having to replace those rear heat tiles, and just the overall look of it. @@gtd9536 It probably definitly deserves to fly again, but the iteration we saw most likely not. Because they could tweak the airframe even more now probably and those heat tiles i dont think are much of an issue anymore, im pretty sure we could replace the entire sections with a single panel nowadays instead of having to go tile by tile. Also the paint, it used the same paint the raptor used wich got phased out, the f-35 uses panels wich are going into the new raptors, they would have to make the new yf-23s with these panels. But otherwise, technology and chips have only gotten smaller, so we could fit more inside that plane then we could in the 80s, way more, we have way more accurate methods of making materials, cutting metals. Idk about selling it to other countrys, i heard japan was interested. But if they took the plans and remade the same plane now, it would be way better, tighter tolerances, stronger parts, it would dominate even more. I think the f-35 is cool, but we dont really have an interceptor, the whole point of the yf-23 was to loiter high above and move really fast, its a mach 2.0+ fighter, it would be cool to see the us release a fleet of advanced yf-23s as some type of interceptor role.
Such an interesting video, YF-23 frontal profile seriously influenced the Su-57 design, looks like china also took the data from Mig 1.44, F-35 and NAFT-23 and smashed them into the J-20 design Canards and all.
10:47 And honestly in war, true war. All your best equipment, tooling, is gobbled up in the opening act. If your reliant on super high tech. That stuff is gone, or at best a long time out. Keeping stuff like this around is gold.
With the F/A 18F being my all time favorite plane, I'm glad it's here to stay for a while longer. If possible I'd like to see a video on what a possible stealth hornet would be like. I've always wanted to see a stealth F/A 18 or at least an idea, assuming you keep most of the main visual features.
Have you heard if the F-15SE? It was a version of the F-15 strike eagle, but stealthier. Whole no one bought it, it's a cool little known fact. I'm not sure about a stealth F/A-18E/F, but if you look into it you might be able to find out if there was one.
@@RobertLegereIII What I mean is keeping the same overall design (Diamond intakes, large LEX (leading edge extensions), same landing gear set up (tho tricky if trying to add a weapon bay) What I was imagining was an F18 with a similar nose shape to the F22, Jagged edged rudders, removable weapons bays (That would be similar to the F15's removable fuel tanks)
On Su-57 and YF-23 similarity, i think its more coincidental. Su-57 is more like evolutionary step of Flanker. Also similar requirement (maneuverability and stealth) can resulting on convergent design which explaine why 2 podded engine design look similar.
Sorry, but the Russians always copy airplanes, the Russians did not create even 1 airplane themselves. CY57 radars are capable of 0.1 reading, F18 it is 0.1... The proportions were taken from the F23 engines. The CY27 is a copy of the (American) NA 335 AIRAFT design, with the fuselage as the main wing. The CY57 is not a 5th generation aircraft, it has an engine that is a French conversion, an engine that is a son of american engine motor used in the A-10 aircraft. These engines were bought by the of Superjet passenger planes and secretly put in their CY57s, these engines do not develop supersonic speed without afterburner!!!!! There are screw heads on the fuselage that the radar can see. This is 4++++ not more.
Wownoteven watched 1Minute and there is a cool detail.. On the NATF-23 cockpit is the name of Toni "Brick" Wilson.... "Brick" is Lockheeds F-35 Pilot and I had the pleasure to meet him in person and get a ride in the F-35A simulator at the "Zigermeet" airshow in Mollis (Canton Glarus /Switzerland) 2019.

F 14 tomcat replacement: Norhtrop: 5th gen fighter Navy: Boeing F 18 hornet Imagine having an replacement that is even weaker than what it is replacing.
So the Navy grumbles about the canards, and then modifies an old plane that will be much less stealthy, than the one with the canards? Sounds about right.
But look how the canard are at an angle. It has a small increase because more things to reflect but the change that they would do mutch is wrong. The chance you reflect mutch to an Aircraft is very small. Also the small increase is nothing what a little Ram could not solfe
They forgot f35s have laser targeting pot. They forgot about the b2s. They forgot growler could be suppressed enemy air defences once your tomahawk have alerted enemy to your presence. They most big mistake was the tomahawk that hit enemy air base with out getting intercepted could’ve also be programmed to hit the nuclear facility. If they insist on “the gps thing” stopping them using b2s or f35, they could have also used sf to paint the target.
Yes I’ve been waiting for this one looks like the base design the mig bureau used for the mig 1.44 that the Chinese used for the j-20 which indirectly means the design is still alive
would like to point out that even if we got the NATF-23, Top Gun: Maverick would've still used the two seat F/A-18 so the film camera could be placed in the cockpit. That is why TG:M never really used the F-35B, only one seat note: im writing this at the start of the vid, so if he mentions this, then oh well
Exactly. It's obvious from the production. That's why for me, the first top gun cannot be topped. It was actually a plausible situation, whereas I have to turn off my aviation brain watching Maverick
Be the Goose to your Maverick? I don't want to break my neck when the canopy doesn't open after a reckless pilot causes a compressor stall. No thank you!
The Super Hornet is just an unfortunate continuation of the trend at the time of trying to make a tactical fighter into a one-size-fits-all strike platform. It led to the loss of any light bomber platform in the force with the retirement of the F-117A in the early 2000's. This is ironic because the future of warfare looks to be favoring airframes more similar to light bombers than tactical fighters. The range requirements in the Pacific in particular are very challenging for today's tactical fighters.
NOTE : The canards on the yf23 that were proposed were to be at the ends of the wings. Not as a euro type. Canard. Just a little FYI. That would have gave it more maneuverability in a dogfight. Which was never to be or will be. The Navy f35 and the USMC f35 doesn't even have a Canon. But the USA app does 👌 Just wanted to bring that to light. The canards were supposed to be at the end of the wings, not in the Euro style at the front of the fuselage. I really love your channel and thank you so much for we can all see that it is a Labor of love. 🕊️🕊️🕊️ Ps, If you go back to the original program you will clearly hear them state that they would add canards to the end of the wings if that's all it was. It was not. 5th gen. Aircrafts were not designed to dogfight. The bvr is first seen first shot. Now with the meteor coming online and the new amram going over 100 nautical miles. The YF 23 had more room for ordinance than the raptor. Keeping Lockheed in business
Pull the wings to the back a little to resemble F-22 (effectively make it a delta wings), add a small nearly-vertical stabilizer under the rudder... Bamm... We got J-20 😅
Waited 20+ years, to get a barely capable Lockheed product. I can say this for Lockheed....unlike the products they eventually field, their P.R. and sales teams, are head and shoulders above the competition.
Barely capable? Um....NO!!!. When I first heard congressional leaks concerning cost over runs and the reported design short commings of the 35. I was really not a fan. BUT, in the light of day, pilots who were skeptical of the jet before flying it have become its staunchest supporters. Apparently, it is capable of far more in performance than was widely believed. The "cost over runs" are largely attributable to the way the f 35 was designed and built. An entire industry protocol was developed to rapidly produce aircraft from concept to prototype in record time. This will pay dividends on future aircraft programs. The 35 is designed to be"upgradeable" in most every facet of its weapons, weapons control systems, and avionics. The YF 23 and F 22 are not. Future costs to rapidly upgrade the 35 will come at a substantial savings over previous aircraft. The production related costs alone, will continue to serve other programs well into the future.
@@Phuc_Socialist_You_Tube The point WAS, at the time of the fly-off, the aircraft were to go into production! Northrup, had an assembly facility, being readied for the possibility. Lockheed had a decade of finalizing thier design...using many components, commandeered from the YF-23's advanced avionics suite. Took Lockheed all that time, to finally get thier product, capable, for production. Cost overruns meant, that buying more fighters, was now out of the question. Starting up assembly lines now, is out of the question, since components in the craft, were made in the 80's & 90's and they've not been made since (Technology has advanced). Lockheed's delay, was because they had a barely capable craft, at the time of the fly-off, and heavily "Donated" to appropriations committee members, re-election campaigns.
@@jerrypadilla4384 The YF 23 was competing with the YF 22, NOT the F 35. The YF 23 was a proposed air superiority fighter. NOT a multi role strike fighter. The version proposed for the navy was still an air superiority fighter, NOT a multi role strike fighter. As previously stated, The YF 23 did not have the advanced weapons integration systems of the YF 35. Nor did the YF22. Those aircraft were not designed to be extensively upgraded. F 35 was. The F 35 is getting cheaper by the day as 14 nations have started receiving aircraft. The F 35 doesn't need to be the fastest or most maneuverable. It's strength is its numbers and its cross platform data sharing. It can shoot down an enemy using a Sam site miles away from its location, or a ship borne weapons system. It simply overwhelms the enemy in numbers and weapons capability. It is the only U.S. fighter capable of shooting down an enemy located behind it. "Off Bore" weapons capability is one of its strong suits. It also works better with the B1 Lancer than any other U.S. platform. I get tired of " Fanboyism", and wish people would stick to the FACTS not here say. NOW HERE THIS!!! THE YF23 AND THE F 35 ARE NOT COMPETING PLATFORMS. THE F 35 IS A MULTI ROLE STRIKE FIGHTER TO REPLACE THE F16/ A4 TYPE AIRCRAFT. THE YF 23, like the 22 WAS TO REPLACE F15s and additionaly (unlike the 22) FA/18s. The YF 23, as a U.S. air superiority fighter, was never intended for export. The F35 was. It is a multi national replacement for the F16/ A4/ Harrier.
@@Phuc_Socialist_You_Tube The 35, was ANOTHER overpriced P.O.S. product, by Lockheed. It won, because it's competitor was one of the UGLIEST jet aircraft ever made. (Looked like a pregnant manta ray) But, it still was potentially better, than the 35. Again, Lockheed's P.R. team, outsold the competition. And it was helped, by the pure aesthetics, of the offensive looking aircraft, flying against thiers. LIKE the YF-22 & YF-23 fly-offs, Lockheed took another decade, to fine tune an aircraft, that was supposed to go into production, upon award of contract.
@@jerrypadilla4384 Your a hopeless misinformed fanboy. Looks don't mean shit, F the 23, it failed to perform as did the YF 32. SORRY, that is fact. I don't have time for emotional B.S. eating fanboys.
There is in Google, a Swedish stealth fighter designs. One a single engine version and two engine version and at first it looks like the Rafale from the front but it has the canted tails like the YF-23. I just imagine a carrier based version of this design which has three internal bays and six wing stations.
The first time I saw the Su PAK ; I recognise the YF-23 resemblance. . It was MAGNIFICENT , a better fighter and still lost the opportunity to protect USA skies. . 😢
Navy doesn’t need a stealth fighter it needs a fleet defender. An advanced 4.5+ gen plane with updated Phoenix missiles. They already have the F-35. They need to supplement it. Fill in the gap! They should revisit the Super Tomcat 21 concept and bring it to the future. It doesn’t have to be that airplane but the mission is still valid.
it looks considerably like the chinese hack known as the J-20 or "mighty dragon" complete with canards and all... the original YF-23 Grey Ghost or Blackwidow II is still the best answer . IMO , she's just 1 sexy beast too...

I watched a video that said the yf 23 was inspired by a Russian design that they bought just after the cold war.
What? Seaweed? I'm already in LOVE with this thing. Looks just as great as the original YF23.
It was a modified YF-23 rival to the F-22
10:47 And honestly in war, true war. All your best equipment, tooling, is gobbled up in the opening act. If your reliant on super high tech. That stuff is gone, or at best a long time out. Keeping stuff like this around is gold.
Lol, the meme about the 5th gen jet should've had Northrop Grumman running from Lockheed Martin
6:38 RCS stands for RADAR cross section. For the rear specifically it would be R2CS or Rear RCS.
came to post this haha
I didn't see this before commenting myself. I should have scrolled a bit more.
The Super Hornet was already designed with stealthy features
how are you gonna make it stealth without changing visual features? what's to see if you did achieve it without changing visuals.
The super Hornet is probably the most stealthy 4th Gen rn so this is the best ur ur gonna get
A quarter of the show is an add for a pay to play game. I found it and explained it.
On Su-57 and YF-23 similarity, i think its more coincidental. Su-57 is more like evolutionary step of Flanker.
Also similar requirement (maneuverability and stealth) can resulting on convergent design which explaine why 2 podded engine design look similar.
Also NATF-23 side profile look more like Su-47 than Su-57
@@swordsman1137 SU47 is a copy from American X models...
Ive seen that "FBI raid" meme 100's of times. But this was the first time I actually laughed out loud from it😂. The way you used it was pure Gold😁👍
Black Widow, Sea Widow, Rainbow Widow, Golddigger Widow, Flirty Widow, Mad Widow , Rarely Caressed Widow...... whatever you like about Widow making, it's up to you

F 14 tomcat replacement:
Norhtrop: 5th gen fighter
Navy: Boeing F 18 hornet
Imagine having an replacement that is even weaker than what it is replacing.
Love your channel. You really do have some of the coolest graphics of any TH-cam channel out there. Keep up the good work.
We didnt expect a meme in a middle of Military documentary.....
So many amazing channels uploaded today.
But a found and explained video...
That's the cherry on top of it all.
Thank you so much 😀
This could be the worthy replacement of the F14 Tomcats as a dedicated stealth interceptor/fighter.
I was at Edwards Air Force Base during the ATF program.
My biological father worked on the YF-23 and the A-12 program.
I really wish they would build a modernized version of the YF-23
Can see bits of several different jets in this including the Yf23, f22, f35, f18, and the nasa f15 stol. Pretty interesting concept.
Honestly even the redesign is menacing and sleek
Although the original is every sleek and simple
Love the designs
6:34 "probably to lower the RCS or rear cross section."
*RCS is Radar Cross Section.*
The animation and cinematics are getting Better.... Good job F&E
Thanks! Considering I’m one guy doing all the 3d I think I’m doing ok
@@FoundAndExplained becoming good at it... Keep it up
And btw I want you to make a video on Skylon and the freedom ship... Go look it up
It’s funny how it kinda resembles the FB-22 with canards
If you start now it will take you 69,420 years before you can get the F-14
Watching these vehicles in action is thrilling and inspiring at the same time
They forgot f35s have laser targeting pot.
The Navy is looking to develop a 6yh gen aircraft called the FAXX.
Yes I’ve been waiting for this one looks like the base design the mig bureau used for the mig 1.44 that the Chinese used for the j-20 which indirectly means the design is still alive
I havent even started the video , but can say the level of animation is GOD like
Would surely like to learn this from you
I’d love to see a video on the yf-12
I don’t want to spoil the video “Maverick was successful” 😂😂😂😂 so glad i saw it day one
I've been playing warthunder for 4 years now it takes time and patience but you will love it
I shed tears of joy during the opening sequence of Top Gun Maverick. Pure nostalgia and all the feels.
that intro alone was amazing!
Can you make a video on the A-12
this is the sexiest fighter aircraft I've ever seen.
Ahh, no wonder the SU-57 is such a beauty. It is inspired by the Widow. 😍
>grim reapers tail
would like to point out that even if we got the NATF-23, Top Gun: Maverick would've still used the two seat F/A-18 so the film camera could be placed in the cockpit. That is why TG:M never really used the F-35B, only one seat
note: im writing this at the start of the vid, so if he mentions this, then oh well
Goose was a RIO not a wingman. Iceman was the wingman.
True and goose died haha
NOTE : The canards on the yf23 that were proposed were to be at the ends of the wings. Not as a euro type. Canard. Just a little FYI. That would have gave it more maneuverability in a dogfight. Which was never to be or will be. The Navy f35 and the USMC f35 doesn't even have a Canon. But the USA app does 👌 Just wanted to bring that to light. The canards were supposed to be at the end of the wings, not in the Euro style at the front of the fuselage.
I really love your channel and thank you so much for we can all see that it is a Labor of love. 🕊️🕊️🕊️
Ps, If you go back to the original program you will clearly hear them state that they would add canards to the end of the wings if that's all it was. It was not. 5th gen. Aircrafts were not designed to dogfight. The bvr is first seen first shot. Now with the meteor coming online and the new amram going over 100 nautical miles. The YF 23 had more room for ordinance than the raptor. Keeping Lockheed in business
as the mightybjorn once said: "The most dangerous threat to a tank (in this case any military asset like a plane here) is a politician."
should do the experimental F-22 variants family ie. X-44 Manta, Navy F22, and FB-22
The ST-21 super tomcat would have been better than the super hornet, but it was a cold warrior before the new cold war got started.
YES! I’ve been saying the SU-57 looks like the YF-23 and other than the back it’s pretty much the same aircraft.
Nosecone shape, engine placement. Thats it
6:36 RCS is Radar Cross Section, not rear cross section!
It wasn't just that the Navy was over budget by the end of 1991, it was that the Soviet Union ceased to be a main adversary by the end of 1991.
Pull the wings to the back a little to resemble F-22 (effectively make it a delta wings), add a small nearly-vertical stabilizer under the rudder... Bamm... We got J-20 😅
"Play along side me." sounds better than "Play with me."
>Intake above the wing
>So when it stalls you also loose engine power, and make it unrecovereable.
"why don't you be my Goose to my Maverick." in the intro sounds like something I'd imagine would be a pick up line in a gay bar.
Love the GRIM REAPERS logos on the planes - my other favorite channel 😃
Man, this plane looks like something an orange obsessed maniac would *predictably* fly
It does look like the VX-23.
LETS GOOOO you finally released it
That intro was amazingly well animated!
Where did you get the design details on the NATF-23? Great video

The point WAS, at the time of the fly-off, the aircraft were to go into production!

The 35, was ANOTHER overpriced P.O.S. product, by Lockheed.
Look! Its the VX-23.
The NATF-23!? Suddenly, my birthday wish list just got longer... (Too bad this Gen-5 aircraft never saw the light of day. )
Oh hold my spot I need to get my computer, back up and running, I'll be EDGE to your Blaze.
The YF-23 and F22 are both great planes. I guess it would have been a hard choice
both
There is in Google, a Swedish stealth fighter designs. One a single engine version and two engine version and at first it looks like the Rafale from the front but it has the canted tails like the YF-23. I just imagine a carrier based version of this design which has three internal bays and six wing stations.
There are official government announcements. Sweden and Japan have joined UK's Tempest program.
That Lockheed meme is genious
Wow!! This us a beast . First time seeing this prototype
looks a bit like my Ultra Raptor FA-22 . ( see channel .) loving this design .
Wouldn’t the vectored thrust of the F-22 make it a logical basis for a Navy fighter? Did both designs fail simply because of budget overruns?
That top gun maverick intro style is gold
I have a question. If I already play war thunder then how do I play along with you. Please reply, I would love to join your battle.
The first time I saw the Su PAK ; I recognise the YF-23 resemblance. . It was MAGNIFICENT , a better fighter and still lost the opportunity to protect USA skies. . 😢
Thanks for sharing mate.
Dont think it would have been so stealthy with those canards at the front.
Imagine maverick and hangman each with their own f-23s against the su-57s in the movie
I can guarantee the Admirals saw the canards and said "Nope"
try less rigid air pressurized wings for less total weight of air planes, even tube fuselage with air pressure
Your graphics are fantastic.
“You can be the goose to my maverick”
Me: but didn’t goose die… oh…
it looks considerably like the chinese hack known as the J-20 or "mighty dragon" complete with canards and all... the original YF-23 Grey Ghost or Blackwidow II is still the best answer . IMO , she's just 1 sexy beast too...
