Girl you nailed it on so many levels…especially the cost for curly cuts👏🏽 I literally get my hair cut once a year because it’s so damn expensive. Once it grows out I have to deal with the unevenness or try snipping off the ends myself because I can’t afford the maintenance. I wish we could pamper ourselves regularly at the salon like so many others do but I’d have to get a part-time job just to upkeep my hair appointments. Equality is definitely warranted in the hair community and you spoke truth today, Bianca…we thank you‼️

@@mpkblydspkbl745, understood. Even Harvard graduates have to back the bragging rights up with results. I agree with Bianca but I still say we should find licensed cosmetologist who can make this happen. We have to start some where but naturals don’t use chemicals and that is the main component of requiring to license.

Bianca is preaching this Sunday! These ppl literally have no idea what they are doing. It’s a shame. This is why I don’t like going to a stylist., I went in August for the first time in years to get a hair cut and of course she blew out my hair and chopped off way too much. AFTER I told her my hair has massive shrinkage. They don’t listen and don’t care. Then she proceeds to style me with mousse and tried to fluff out my hair and said I wanted volume. I then told her I hated volume and never use mousse. She said why didn’t you tell me, BC YOU DIDN’T ASK.

This! 👏 What do they say, 80 some percent of the population has textured hair, yet it’s not the “norm”?! We all have so much trauma from salon visits. The stories I hear from my coaching clients about their experiences are maddening. This is one reason I started offering them even though I’m not a “certified stylist.”
Where does change even begin? We have to start increasing the demand by asking for curl experienced stylist for them to even realize they need to improve their education.

As a professional licensed hair stylist who specializes in curly/natural hair your video speaks to my SOUL!!!! I agree that if you can't work with ALL textures you can't call/consider yourself to be a professional hairstylist. I'm licensed in Texas, and in school we were not required or given proper instruction on how to do curly/natural hair (and I hated that it was referred to as "textured" hair). The only classes on curly/natural hair (which were only about 3-4 classes during a whole year) was how to tame or straighten the hair to suit euro-centric standards. Right now only Louisiana, Minnesota, Connecticut, and New York require cosmetology schools to include it the curriculum.
This is why I'm so passionate about the services I provide to my clients. Growing up it was so hard to care for and style my curls. It wasn't until I was almost 30 that I finally was able to figure it out and get a cut without having to straighten my hair. Nothing makes me happier than educating my clients and having them fall in love with their natural hair. Now, I will say when it comes to the pricing for cuts, for me it's not so much the scarcity of my services, but because of the time and cost of products.

💯 right on. I have different curl patterns and it's frustrating. I literally had a stylist complain I had so much hair and thick. Like she was exhausted and it was just a trim. 🙄 I used to perm my hair in the 80s just to get a uniform pattern. I stopped when I got pregnant. I'm 59, and stopped dying my hair years ago. It's now about being gentle and acceptance due to my sensitive skin rebelling. Gray curly hair has its own complexities. I don't like getting cuts or trims, even with a sweet stylist. I just try to keep ends from frizzing. And as you age, you have to constantly adjust. And I have educate myself with channels like yours.

I'm a curly girl. Similar curl pattern to yours. It's a nightmare for us curly girls to go to most salons. Most stylist have no clue but to straighten the hair with chemicals. I do know how to do my own hair because like you said I've been doing it all my life. In the past I've gone to a "popular brand name" hair school just for a shampoo/condition/scalp cleaning treatment. I tell the stylist in advance that they don't have to style my hair because most of the time they wouldn't know how to anyways. Keep preaching for us naturally curly girls sister. By the way I've not had a chemical in my hair for over 15 years...I'm real deal natural. 🙂

I live in Atlanta, GA and here there is a new trend of Head Spas, where you go and get a hair/scalp treatment that focalizes on massaging and relaxation. Out of all the salons that have opened up, I have not seen one tailor to curly hair aftercare. The procedure once the head spa is completed, there is a room where there is a mirror and blow dryer. The norm is for clients to "blow dry" their hair so that they don't leave with wet hair. If us curly girls use only a blow dryer for the aftercare.... we would be lookin A HOT MESS walking out..... Their pages will intentionally mentioned that they also cater to curly girls but their after care says quite the opposite. The idea sounds amazing to get a head massage but I refuse to give any of them my money if the expectation is for me to bring in my own hair products and do it myself after.... Had to rant. Your rant inspired my rant that hadn't been vocalized yet. I hope others have noticed what I'm noticing because it's not right. Anyway, love you Bianca and thank you for speaking out on these issues that all of us have either experienced or noticed!

I live in Atlanta too and saw an ad for one yesterday. I immediately went to the FAQs because I was like “what do they do with your hair afterwards?” And of course they said they just blow dry. What really got me was them saying depending on how curly or could your hair is, the don’t recommend the scalp treatments because it will lead to your hair being tangled but my question is, why not just detangle May hair once you’re done with the scalp massage? And maybe have an option to just braid my hair or something if I don’t want it blown out. It’s like damn, just because I have curly or coil hair I can’t enjoy this form or self care smh.

Thank you for this…and say it louder for the people in the back. A black stylist doesn’t mean they know how to do curly hair.My stylist went out of the country and I needed my hair done. I went to another black stylist….an actual friend of hers…that was trained at the same time as she and who actually worked in a salon to together at a point….so I naively thought I could trust her. Welp I was wrong. She cut my hair and the cut looked like a staircase. It was horrible. When my stylist returned and saw the cut she was furious. When I told her who did she was mortified. She outright said she should know that you can’t cut curly hair like you cut straight hair and and said she would talk to her when she has a cooler head as to not upset her friend but to point her in the right direction. Now, when my stylist is going out of the country my hair goes into box braids for a month until she returns. It’s ridiculous that I have to plan my hair care around my stylist’s life because I can trust others to do it. So thank you for this video.

GIRL!!!!! Let's keep going on this!!! When I moved to Boston and looked for a curly hair salon I almost had a heart attack. A 30 mins appointment is $100 minimum!!!! I even considered going to a regular salon, but then I remembered that none of them know how to deal with curly hair. Mind you I am 2c-3a curly girl, and I haven't been able to trust anyone who isn't a curly hair specialist. Short story: came across with this IG account of a hair salon, they do a beautiful job with color. They posted a video of a curly, who happened to be in my school so I know what her hair looks like... They colored it, beautifully! BUT when it came to style it I grinned! Even the stylist, who was the salon owner, looked uncomfortable, and I thought, how come none of the 'professional hair stylists' know how to do at least the basics on curly hair?!
To end my rant I wanna say that I used to get trims every 3-4 months because that's what my hair needs, now I have to pull it up to 6-8 months which is when I get to go to PR and can see my stylist.

I live in the Boston area and I’ve never had a good experience with a cut and don’t get me started on styling!! I have wavy/curly very fine, very frizzy hair. I’ve learned how to style from videos but I can’t get a good shape anywhere. I just use Manes by Mel videos to cut my hair now. It’s not exactly what I want but it’s better than any cut I’ve ever gotten.
Also, I’ve always had a picture in my head that I should feel seen and heard when I go to a salon. And after spending tons of money, I should feel and look beautiful when I leave. It’s never the case. When the stylist styles my hair, I usually look and feel ugly and resent having to pay. Now I just get the roots touched up and leave the salon with wet hair.

I haven’t stepped in a salon for my own haircut or style in 6-7 years. Partly because they are anti-long hair (give them an inch and they take off 7, no JOKE), partly because they have no idea how to manage even WAVY hair. It’s so much worse for the curlier textures. And this was on top of having been rudely handled by condescending stylists who detested me for not knowing how to manage waves they themselves were clueless on!!! If professionals can’t act and perform professionally, then they are not professionals period.

YES to EVERYTHING you said. My senior prom 1992, I left the salon, drove home crying and re-washed my hair. Went to prom in my natural curly self-styled pineapple “up-do.” I also have salon chair muteness and stopped paying stylists for sub standard treatment and TERRIBLE cuts more than 20 years ago when I began to cut my own hair. It became a huge red flag to me every time I sat in a salon chair and the stylist would ask “do you ever wear your hair straight?” I knew instantly that stylist had NO idea how to handle curly hair and wanted to give me a straight cut and a blowout which would never look good after I wash and style curly at home. I decided to treat myself and I went to a great curl specialist 6-7 years ago and agree with you that they are educating and such but yeah…I do NOT have $150-$200 to spend on a cut so I continue to do my hair myself after that one visit…just didn’t feel a value in it personally. I totally agree with you! This is ridiculous! It can be frustrating when professional hairstylists lack knowledge about curly hair, especially considering the unique care and techniques required to maintain and style it properly. Curly hair varies in texture, curl pattern, and needs, and not having expertise in these areas can lead to damaging practices or unsatisfactory results. It highlights a gap in cosmetology education, which sometimes prioritizes straight hair techniques over textured hair. Ideally, all hairstylists should be trained in the diverse range of hair types so they can provide the best service for all clients. Inclusivity in beauty services is key, especially as more people embrace their natural curls.

I have been to this person and she knows how to comb through my hair without hurting me, she knows what products to use and even has implemented some of these products for use and purchase in a predominately white salon. Did I mention that she is white with biracial kids? She is not great with styling my hair but tells me that before I sit in the chair. She also tries by watching videos and asking questions. I always am prepared to either style my own hair after the service or do it again when I get home before going anywhere else in public. Will I continue to go to her? Yes , I will because she tries! You know what I’ve noticed about a lot of black hair stylists. They judge the ‘health’ of your afro hair based on how ‘good’ it looks once it is straightened. If the ends are frizzy and dry (which will be natural as it’s the oldest part of your hair) they will tell you your hair is damaged. I don’t like the idea that our kinky/coily hair health is judged by a standard that it is not natural for us.

I never thanked you on your platforms for sharing different curly hair salons all around the country. I was so desperate looking for a salon a year after I did a big chop-done by my aunt who is a great Dominican hairstylist if what you need a is a blowout lol. I’ve been following you for years and I’m so glad I knew I could trust you, because even tho you are on the other side of the country you have no idea how you made my life a ton easier. You recommended whom is now my stylist, Kat, she’s the owner of The Main Attraction Hair Salon in East Rutherford, NJ. She’s amazing, very knowledgeable and helpful. Her salon is very clean and nice. I must add, her staff(hair stylists) are also very knowledgeable and friendly. I love all of them and would definitely trust them all when it comes to styling. And that’s all thanks to you and your devotion to research and share with us all your knowledge. Years of hard work have not gone unnoticed and we appreciate you and I want you to feel appreciated. I love your channel and the community that you’ve built, and just know that I have loved it since the first day I found you! Since the day I said to myself that I should embrace my beautiful natural hair and luckily found your videos. Thank youuuu 💯💞💞💞✨

AMEN! I have been natural for over 20 years and it has been a roller-coaster. Everything from the "snatching" as they did not know how to detangle, to not using enough conditioner, suggesting we relax it "just a bit to loosen the curl", etc. Many black stylists used products that were too strong for my 3C curls. I've had months where I did not even want to try to fix my hair, because it needed time to heal from the last appointment. You and Mell changed my life with knowledge, products, and empowerment. Have been using the same stylist for years. She is a white lady, working for Aveda salons, that paid to take a Ouidad course years ago. Her cuts are good, but styling is just okay. Nice thing is she is open to learning, so I go to most appointments with a new brush or product. Always have a hair clip, scarf, and gel with me...just in case. Often have left with wet hair, simply because it was easier. An Aveda session has never been cheap, so it would be nice to have it look nice for at least a few days. I remember the days when I had relaxed hair and left the salon feeling pretty.

I AGREE! where i live it is extremely hard to find stylists that cut curly hair. My stylist was taught by her teacher how to cut curly hair and she was the only one in her class who was taught. She cuts, washes, and styles my hair all for $50 dollars. I think it's super reasonable!! And she gets clients with curls much tighter than mine. She is the first stylist I have had that makes me feel seen finally!

This post is HILARIOUS! You must have read my mind because yesterday I was legitimately thinking to myself that you and one other person(a professional cosmetologist on TH-cam) have taught me about my hair and I actually learned more here than on their platform. This comment may be long but whatever. I didn’t even know I had any curl to my hair until i was in my late 20s,lol….i have been following you for 5-7ish years and that’s when I finally was educated to control my crazy fine but curly hair(50+ years old).
I haven’t let any stylist do anything other than trim my hair and wash it since I was 30 years old….i leave with a wet head. Everything/ you say about the licensing is spot on. As a medical professional I was required to do a certain amount of continuing education yearly-I did extra….any job that requires a license should truly verify that people can perform the tasks expected of them. I truly appreciate the education you’ve given me and the reviews of products you do….its so incredibly helpful and I trust you because of your honesty…❤

I 100% agree!! Also, I feel there is a creative void where we all get the same cut; it doesn't matter if you like it, and it's pretty annoying. I don't enjoy having the exact same curly cut as everyone else in my city! Straight hair has multiple variations and types of cuts, and I think curly hair should be the same. I only see 1 or 2 variants, which is very sad. I'm not sure how it is in the US, but every single curly person here in Europe has the SAME CUT!

I clapped throughout this whole video because it’s all so true!! This reminds me of when I got a hair trial done for my wedding hair look and I really really wanted to wear my natural curls for my wedding but the trial results were frizzy and awful. The stylist I went to at the time was great at curly cuts but didn’t know how to style curly hair for formal occasions. I ended up redoing it on my own the next day so it would look good for a friend’s wedding. I felt so discouraged. I ended up going to a different stylist and having my hair curled with a curling iron for my wedding day look. I was pleased with how my hair looked on my wedding day but it obviously wasn’t my natural curls, which would have been nice.

They don't give time to diffuse so I just leave with wet hair. Most of the time I also have to redo the style either same day or next day. I just take it as is, but girl you right. This video was so important to make because I don't think there are enough licensed stylists who know how to cut curly hair. Last year was the year I decided once and for all that I would not be returning to the salon I went to after my stylist cut my ends with thinning shears and wrecked my ends.
I am so much happier with my current stylist at a curly hair salon. Even though I only go a few times a year, I do go more often as I am trying to maintain an actual hairstyle. I can justify the cost of a curly cut as it's not as expensive as some places in my area and I have finally found a stylist I love and am building a good rapport and she knows my hair now. Thrilled to have finally found a great curly hair stylist.

Exactly this - on all the levels. I've had conversations about this so many times. The number of times I've sat in a chair and had stylists with no idea what to do with wavy/curly hair is probably 90% of the time. If they don't know how to work with the person sitting in the chair they can't call themselves 'professional' anything. They shouldn't even be hired. Same with skin tones for MUAs.
100% needs to be a change in the education. If the institutions do not train their students on all hair types they should be told to expand their syllabus or face being fined/closed down. Why send unqualified hair stylists out into the world - or leave those stylists to be forced to pay for even more training because their educator did not provide a comprehensive education? Where is the value for money argument? This is a problem created by the industry who then asks the customer to fix it for them OR, even worse, manipulates the argument and blames the customer for having a 'tricky, uncommon, challenging' hair type. Give me a break. My response is 'know your job or retrain - properly.'
Also, the cost of a "curly hair cut" is crazy. Around £150 in the UK. I don't know who can afford that. I do not accept it!

Hi, As a professional hairstylist and curly hair specialist I totally understand how you feel. Most of the time in beauty school they don't teach us much about different types of hair to work with. They teach the basics, its on the stylist to learn themselves and get educated after school by taking more classes to help expand their knowledge and range of diffferent hair types and textures. Sadly some don't bother to learn anything new. As someone who also has super curly hair I know whats it like going to someone that doesn't know how to cut curls. Its a mess sometimes lol.

You are preaching to the choir! Last year before going into a protective style, I know I needed my ends trimmed pretty badly and I don’t trust myself to do it. So I went on Yelp to look for high rating salons, and I called a super/great clips that had darn near 5 stars, and asked if they were comfortable and knew how to trim curly hair that would be blow dried, and I was assured that they did, and made an appointment.
When I go, there were two ladies in there, and the lady who cut my hair seemed very, very, very uncertain. honestly, I don’t think she’s ever cut my texture of here before. I knew my ends were rough since it had been some time since I had gotten a trim, but she literally took off between 5-6 inches of hair… Which I was shocked. There was another lady who was working on a gentleman who was trying to verbally culture through how to do it, and I should’ve just asked to wait for her, because the other lady seems super knowledgeable about naturally curly hair and how to cut it. For whatever reason, I felt bad for the other girl and I just let her cut my hair.
I went in the salon with my hair about the middle of my back, and left with above shoulder length hair. Again I knew I needed a couple of inches cut off, and I was thinking at least 2 to from what I could see, but I think because my hair was blow dried and not bone straight, I think she ended up taking off more than what was needed (she was also trying to wet my hair before she cut it and both myself and the other lady had to explain that’s not how you cut curly hair)😢😢😢
