Murwillumbah Flood 2022 - Northern Rivers, New South Wales - Australia - 4K Footage

  • Northern Rivers NSW is a very beautiful region but does experience an occasional major Tweed flood crisis. This year, 2022, we experienced a record-breaking historic flooding crisis caused by an intense storm cell and very heavy rain. The Tweed River peaked at 6.51 mAHD (metres above Australian Height Datum). For the first time ever the Murwillumbah flood levee wall overflows into the Murwillumbah CBD. The wall is substantial and was built to protect the heart of the town and some of the adjacent lower lying residential area. Fortunately, the rain downpours abated, and the overflow stopped. According to the Tweed Shire Council, this historic flooding reached the highest level in recorded history.
This year, Murwillumbah as well as nearby surrounding towns and villages in Northern NSW became isolated. Main roads become impassable due to the terrible flood wash-outs and blocking land slips. Services such as power, phone and internet failed. Commercial deliveries such as food and essential goods like spare parts were not able to get through. Technicians and other repair personnel were likewise unable to gain access due to massive road damage. I'm afraid that my written description here can't do justice to the circumstances, especially for those who have incurred heavy losses. All this adds up to a historic flooding crisis with SES volunteers and Police involved in rescue operations with the Westpac rescue helicopter picking up supplies from Marine Rescue NSW at Point Danger to deal with the Tweed floods. From images and videos now becoming available, it's clear that the road system will require extensive repair.
In low lying areas, for some weeks and even longer, there will now be large rubbish heaps piled on nature strips awaiting council pickup. It's happened time and time again in the past and will happen again in the future. It would be good if people could move somewhere else, but these properties will continue to be inhabited. However, the cost of relocating is prohibitive. A rising from the ashes always happens as resilient people start over again. There are kind-hearted folk here who will lend a hand.

I walked down the Main Street today and had coffee at the Austral. Hard to believe this was last week. The devastation and loss is immense. But the community spirit in this place is amazing. Thank you for the footage. Very interesting to see it all unfold. 🙏🏻

Mell, it's certainly been a dramatic time. After I vacated the CBD, It must have risen another 60cm in town. I reckon, from other footage that's been posted, it's come from some spillage over the wall, some via the hockey fields from further upstream and from rainwater draining from higher ground into the town centre. I think our town needs some monster pumps to cope in future. Yes, the community spirit is second to none.

Hi Sean!. Yes, your area in Hartigan Street was badly affected. I hope you didn't have too much loss. I live well above the flood area along the Byangum Rd / North Arm Road ridge so was safe from flood waters. I did however, get soaked to the skin while filming. It was hard to hole the camera without shaking underneathg my umbrella which kept bowing inside out. Lets hope the pump near your street keeps working next time if we get another flood.

Hello 'The Last Australian'. I'm sorry you have not been able to contact your loved one. That could possibly be because the flooding has caused internet and phone outages which have been going for few days. I think in most cases they have now been restored. The flood damage here has been monumental. The roads will take a huge amount of effort to repair. If you still can't make contact I would suggest that one possible way would be to post a request on the largest and most active well run Facebook Groups here. It's the group called Murwillumbah Matters. It's a public group.

There are many folk who have lost huge amounts of household goods and cars as well. Businesses have been badly impacted. Local effort has been the main resource to help, i.e. self help. David, for 99.9 % of the time Murwillumbah is safe. A flood every now and then occurs. It badly effects people in low lying areas but there are many safe places to live on higher ground where you can feel completely safe. Utility outages and supplies are just temporary and are put right within a few days. It's still worth it to live here. Just understand the terrain and locate accordingly. @gavinhartmedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

David, I don't know if you are far or near but if you wanted to visit and check out Mountain View, I'd be happy to show you around and tell you some of the ins and outs. I'm a resident in the village myself and for me it's a wonderful solution for my senior years. A lot depends on your personal attitudes and likes/dislikes. The village is nicely terraced into a landscape which once upon a time was a quarry, so there are elevated units and others down lower. The flood waters from the Tweed river can't reach here but the rain was so heavy this year that a small number of lower units experienced drainage backflow problems resulting in some messy floor level issues. I've no doubt these instances will be addressed post haste. Zero problems in my unit. I think I need to mention that you can no longer buy a property in the village on a strata title. All future units will be leasehold. A relatively high exit fee can apply if you leave and you can't achieve a capital gain. Since I am determined to live out my days here, an exit fee is of no concern to me. The cost of buying a leasehold is far less than buying a strata title unit elsewhere. My monthly fees which include rates and building insurance are only $602.
