So good to see your Mom, & Triston! This was interesting how you used 1800' of rope(?). I like how you wove the colors into the line to mark your 25' & 50'. That made sense, either end in would be 25' in. It was sad to see you go to all that trouble to put in new lines that you ended up with a starfish, 2 stingrays, & 2 Halibut while the seagulls enjoyed pollock scraps. I liked how your Dad separated the braids to put the chain link (?) on then wove the threads back into the rope with his tool, then burned the ends to prevent further fraying. It holds up so strongly. I watched this video several times. I loved seeing what you pull up out of the water. I love seeing everything you see. The scenery, the sea, is so beautiful around you. I really like all these different angles you show. It's nice to get a glimpse into the lives of other people to see how they live. It's sure not an easy life. Thank you. Have a good week.

Could you please explain what the bird line consists of and the way it deflect the birds attention from the main fishing line. Thank you. Love your video. I never miss any.
The bird line is a rope with a float at the far end from the boat. There are a number of other pieces of rope attached to the main line. They hang down like vertical blinds and the birds won't fly through it for fear of hitting a wing on the vertical lines. It's done so the birds don't try to grab a bait with a hook in it, which will drown them. This is a mandated device for the safety of wildlife.
No regs as to length or size of gangion material or hooks. This was some gear a freind had baited up. He finished his quota sooner than expected and let us fish his gear rather than strippping the bait and wasting it. We also used longer gangions in the past, but adopted shorter ones quite some time agao. They are a lot easier for us to handle.
hello, it would be very interesting if at the end of the video you told how much money you spent on bait, on fuel and how much money you eventually earned upon arrival at the port. It is possible to show in the form of a table. I really like your videos, I'm looking forward to new videos. Good luck to you!!!))

The commercial season in Alaska runs 9-10 months. The start/ end dates move around a bit, but it usually opens the first week of March and closes early November. This year the close date is Dec 7th. I think it was extended the last few years due to Covid.

If they do, it'll be a lot more expensive. For small commercial boats, it's all about saving on expenditures that aren't vital to the ongoing operation of the boat. Much like any small business. Bigger boats are usually part of a fleet and have a lot more leeway in income/outgoing for a number of reasons. It's like a corner store versus Costco.
Usually we haul with the current, so by hauling the longline in, the boat will follow. Sometimes we need to reverse on it when the wind or current is pushing us against the line, this keeps it from stretching out and lifting the line off the bottom.
If you split your coil of rope you won’t get any twist’s in it at all when you run it out. Works with any size rope, 3 ply to 8 ply. DSR rope is the best to get 😊. If you don’t know how to split your coil of rope, flip me a message and I will gladly help you 👍
Yes. Squid, pollock, herring and other baits can have very different prices to each other as well as go up and down in price, depending on scarcity/abundance of them, seasonality, costs (fuel, pay etc) and demand.
