I found that my hand would cramp squeezing multiple glue bottles. I used your glue method and love it! I purchased disposable piping bags (for frosting cakes). Put the bag in a drinking cup and fill 1/4 with glue. Cut off a TINY bit of the tip and use this as your glue bottle. Very quick and very painless. Absolutely love this. Give it a try!
Thank you for this video. I started glue basting because of you, and I'll definitely try the glue sticks. Although I recently bought a refill bottle of the liquid glue, It's nice to have a backup. 😊
Glad You finally flipped and glued the batting instead of the fabric and I would suggest that when you get the fabric smooth You can also press it so it will give a nice dry to the glue! 😊 Thanks for Sharing- always great to find alternative techniques for our quilting journey ❤
I have only used a glue stick for applique, I never thought of using to baste a quilt with. I am excited to try it. I am almost finished with a quilt top, I will try that
Love this idea! I will do this on my next quilt! Have you ever rolled your three layers on three separate pool noodles? I find that is easier to keep the 3 layers smooth and I roll out just enough to glue the backer to batting, and top to the batting, then continue to uroll another section until im done. Its been a game chamger for me! ❤
I haven't tried it yet, but I've seen others do it, and it totally makes sense that the pool noodles would help with putting the layers together! Thank you for the suggestion!
Pool noodles were a game changer for me, too. And I think it would be really good with the glue stick. I will try it soon. Have used glue and like it, but always nice to have options
I've used your glue basting and found it very useful. But lately I've discover the "glue stick". My first practice project were hot pads I'm making for Christmas. And it's working out, I don't get big lumpy glue spots. Thanks for your videos, your enthusiasm comes thru in you videos.
I was so glad to try the elmers school liquid glue and it was pretty easy and effective BUT not without problems. Yes, if youre not careful you can dispense too much and it will cause blobs or lumps on the quilt top. The glue stick is such an upgrade...still washable, non toxic, but much easier to apply. I have a baby quilt ready to try so i appreciate your experimentation and refinements for easy basting. "Dot...schmear" you invented a new technique in basting. 😅❤😅
I have tried the glue stick for small projects as they are more controllable, but I still prefer spray basting for my larger projects and quilts. Thanks for sharing.
I've tried the liquid glue and am not a fan and just a few days ago I was wondering about a glue stick and viola here you are, thank you for the video!
Wow, awesome, I am trying the stick next. The glue is so much better than pinning and basting but the stick is even better. Can't wait to see how it goes for you. You rock!!
I have tried applying the liquid school glue by pouring a small amount into a plastic container and applying with a small paint brush, about 1/2 - 1 inch wide. It really does evenly coat and eliminates clumps.
Hey, Miriam! Thanks for the tip. I’ll try this on a future small project and my next bag! I’m so excited to see the transformation of your studio space! Thank you, and stay well! Muskoka ON🇨🇦
🎉Can't wait to try this method! I have used your previous method of school glue several times and it was a life changer for me!! Can't wait to see your studio completed, too.🎉❤😊😊
Oooh, I think I'd like to do hand-quilt-as-you-go as an in front of the TV project! My husband watches stupid stuff sometimes that I don't care about, but that way I'm still in the room at least, lol.
Wow! Can’t wait to try. I loved the school glue on my first quilt, but I do have hand issues and squeezing was hard. Faux pin basting. 😀 can’t wait to try it!
I tried the glue sticks on some smaller projects (quilted dice bags) after I saw your glue basting video. They're fantastic! As an additional note, I used the glue sticks with light-colored fabrics (white and yellow) and it still dried completely clear, even if I accidentally had a bigger blob of it. It just took a little longer.
Hi Miriam, I love using a glue stick for sure. Love to see your hand quilting technique! Thank you for sharing the batting sale, I just placed an order - good deal 👍🏻
My friend and I have ventured into making bags By Annie. This is probably the perfect solution to get the fabric to stick to the foam. 'Painting' (my brilliant idea), the wet Elmer's to the foam made my bag way too stiff. Thank you for expanding our options Miriam!
Just used the glue basting as I learned it from your previous video. No problems at all with FMQ, but while hand sewing the binding, I have encountered a few spots where there must have been a thicker spot of glue and it was hard to get needle thru. Plan to try your Elmer's School Glue Stick method next!! Thanks.
I haven’t glued basted vertically, but I have pin basted using a photographer’s backdrop hanger! Haha if you wanna see how I did that, you can check it out here: Did I Just Figure Out A NEW Way to Pin Baste?! Custom Quilt Update! th-cam.com/video/YDQFcET1Qo8/w-d-xo.html
Wondering if it affects the needle going through the glue. I found that it is problematic with sprat glue. I might try on a smaller project. For now I just use safety pins. Old habits die hard
Yeah, I had the same issue with spray glue. The beauty of the school glue whether you use the stick or the bottled glue is it completely dries and doesn't remain sticky. So it doesn't affect the needle! Pretty cool! And it doesn't stink like the spray adhesive.
I don't have a washer and dryer. Having some mobility issues, it's difficult to carry things to the laundromat. I have a service that picks up my laundry. Would there be a problem sending it out to be washed? Any special instructions to give them?
Hi Cathy! So sorry it took me so long to reply. So whenever I was glue out of a quilt, I wash on cold and use a gentle detergent. Then dry on low heat. 💖
Sorry, haven't been able to focus on pretty much anything. my husband has had two medical emergencies and still in rehab at present. Looks like you are figuring stuff out with the glue stick. In the past when I was piecing something I would either use glue stick or scotch tape. the tape was my go-to as it would come off easily. I hope it is easy to quilt for you. Beautiful quilt top. Best wishes.
The spray basting using less glue through your machine. I can see it junking up your machine. If you hand stitch , I think it may be difficult to wash out once layered.
I can’t use the spray baste, it gives me terrible headaches. The glue whether it’s the stick or regular school glue won’t “gunk” up the needle and washes out great as long as you use Elmer’s School Glue! I totally understand the hesitation, but it might be worth a try! It’s very inexpensive too (if you’re in the US)
Thanks also for the aside about using the glue stick for appliqué - great idea! I will also try it for EPP... Oh, no, hang on - it might make the papers hard to remove? Any of my fellow viewers any experience with this? I'd value advice from anyone who knows🙏Thank you😊🥰
I do EPP and hand quilt the top too. The papers need to be removed before you place the quilt top on the batting. Depending on how sturdy the material is you can leave the edge papers in and take them out right before you get to those to quilt. The glue stick is a wonderful way to hand quilt, makes it so much easier, especially since I EPP the 2” hexagons
@@StitchObsessed thanks, Miriam. Since asking this, I did try basting one or two hexies with glue, but found it a little fiddly and my fingers managed to get sticky😅. I searched TH-cam again and have now learnt a new way to thread baste the papers, where you only catch the corners of the fabric instead of sewing right through the papers. It's really quite quick - quicker than trying to get a dab of glue right on each little corner, avoiding the paper. So I'm all set now in that respect. But I will still be interested to try your glue stick basting for the quilt sandwich😍👍💕
@@MissMamaLinda thank you so much for your reply🥰 Yes, I remove the papers before making the quilt sandwich👍. So you recommend using the glue stick to baste the quilt? 👌 I'll definitely have to try it. I'm looking forward to Miriam's follow-up video where she reports back on her experience☺️ Wow, your EPP quilts must be amazing. I've only ever made a small EPP quilt and even that took me aaaaages😂 But I really enjoy the process and love to have a project on the go, especially for long winter evenings🥰

It will be interesting to find out how it works for you on such a large quilt hope you don’t have any problems while hand quilting. I always do the old school method by basting with needle and thread especially on large quilts 🥰
Ya know, I've never tried thread basting, I should try it. I'm hoping the back won't shift since it's glued! I don't plan to use a hoop either, though I'll probably try it just to see if I like it or not with the bigger project. 🤓
I'm going to try one. So far I've just done it without the hoop, and that seems to be working fine, but I would like to try the hoop to see if it makes it easier.

So was the glue in the bowl or the water? What did you exactly do?
I am really interested in how you used the items you listed.
Yes, I’m interested in exactly how you did this too, did you mix the glue in the water then paint it on with your paint brush??

I'm interested to see how long it lasts as far as how long it will stay glued together. Will it stay as long as regular glue?
I’m pretty sure it will as long as I don’t pull on the individual layers a bunch.
Have you ever tried to baste on a design wall? Pins will keep the batting in place as you glue the top to it. Flip it over and add the backing on.
