Dan Stevens absolutely steals every scene he's in. What a gifted actor -- he has proven how diverse he is after leaving Downton Abbey -- The Guest, Beauty & the Beast (his *real* singing voice is as gorgeous as his speaking voice), Legion, Hilde (his German is flawless) and now this comedic role which is really quite poignant having to hide that he's gay because he's Russian. Another gem from Dan Stevens.

    • @chikaka2012

I agree but thought his Russian accent sounded an awful lot like the Czech brothers from the original SNL. But that actually made him funnier.

When you choose Eurovision on Netflix, you should be resigned to the fact that this will not be a think piece. And it is why I LOVE it. It’s got that zany humor (falls flat sometimes), awesome campy anthemic songs, and it wasn’t mean and crude over Eurovision. It’s just what we need in this pandemic. Something light, easy, predictable and easy to sing along to.

Ja ja ding dong is a masterpiece. That alone gives the movie 100% on rotten tomatoes. I LOVED the movie even though I’m not the biggest Will Ferrell fan. It’s campy, it’s heartfelt, it’s got good music and big stars. A fun watch.

Funny enough, I can confirm the "hosting the Eurovision can bankrupt the country" part as being real. I live in Israel, and when Netta won the contest in 2018, there was a real huge fear that Israel would eventually bail from hosting the 2019 contest because of lack of funds. The local broadcast station feared that it would lose all of it's money hosting and broadcasting the competition (which costed around 100M shekels, btw) in the very possible case that the competition would get cancelled for whatever reason. It literary took Bibi Netanyahu, Israel's PM to step in and force them to agree to host for them to actually start working on the show. Then nobody knew where to take the money for ensuring hosting the competition, and if Israel would get it's money back afterwords. The back and forth on the monetary issue was so big, it became the main government topic for 3 months or so. the central bank of the nation even got involved in. Many cities refused to host the competition because it would literary bankrupt them. The situation got eventually resolved after it was agreed that 1/3 of the government funds for 2019 would go on hosting the Eurovision. yeah, it was this serious. And Israel has a very stable economy too.

Lets put things a bit in proportion, 100m shekels is not really a big deal for a country with strong economy like Israel, its nothing in terms of the yearly budget and for sure no one was afraid it will bankrupt the country.
But yes, there were fighting between the government and the broadcasting network but it was more about conflict of personal interests and the money thing was used as a vehicle for that.
Eventually obviously everyone settled because nobody really was going to let the Eurovision be canceled and good that they did because i think it turned out to be a really good one.

It is really possible, as Justin Timberlake and Madonna really DID perform in the Eurovision, tho only as guest performers. It is more then possible that the Eurovision would gain a new tradition of having American singers perform as guests in the contest, so Farrell and MacAddams can perfectly be next on the line!

Eurovision is about the members of the European Broadcast Union net which are "National public TV's" , not "Country public TV's". So, theoretically, it's possible.
Curiously enough, Wales could be host, but not Scotland, as it is an independent member of the EBU. Flanders and Bavaria are also non-country members.
I know that because the EBU refused the Catalan Public Television as a member, because it was not a country, and those examples were put on the table. (Obviously that went nowhere, despite the flagrant double standard,. Spain being a permanent member of Eurovision)

    • @lynnfinlay
      @lynnfinlay 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Actually as long as they put the movie in a LA theater and it runs for a minimum of 7 days straight, it is eligible for Oscar nominations. In 2019 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted to leave a key rule on eligibility unchanged so streaming services like Netflix and Apple TV could be considered. Just look at Marriage Story and Roma - both won Golden Globe awards last year. Netflix movies can be legit contenders if they meet the eligibility requirement. That said, somehow I doubt this specific movie will be one of them, no matter how good Rachel McAdams is in it.

Mixed bag for me...basically I loved everyhting about it except the main character.
And I kept stumbling over the notion that Greece would send this kind of song, that Russia would send something THAT gay (not sure if this was worth for the one joke in the end) and that apparently not only the UK won the contest but allowed it to happen in Scotland after it.
But the "Eurovision mood" was pretty much spot on, and Rachel Adams and Dan Stevens were amazing.

I'm from the UK, I've been watching Eurovision for many years, I actually used to hate it when I was much younger but I've come to appreciate the ridiculousness of the whole thing. There is some good music but there is a lot of insanity and a hell of a lot of entertainment. In the UK we've also had two wonderful Irish commentators for the longest time, previously Terry Wogan who sadly passed away and now Graham Linehan, both brought many laughs which made it even more entertaining for us. I think some countries do take it deadly seriously, and obviously the acts that take part take it seriously, but for many of us it's all a good excuse to get drunk and have a laugh.

I had a hard time buying the Rachel McAdams crush on Will - that aspect was a bit annoying - I would have preferred that they were just brother and sister. But the rest of the movie was really heart warming and fun. Dan Stevens stole the show, in my opinion.

Although I have been a fan of Eurovision since Euphoria, I was reluctant to watch Fire Saga because I'm not a huge fan of Will Ferrell movies. However, a friend in Italy recommended it to me so I watched. OMG I was not expecting it to be so much fun. I loved all the songs but Dan Stevens stole the show. It was brilliant to have a Russian character that everyone could love.

I'm a french Eurovision fan and I was afraid the movie would only make fun of it, but I must say I enjoyed it A LOT. It's supposed to be silly but I see it more as an homage. And some parts of the movie are really heartwarming. Sigrit's song is wonderful, the movie embraces the contest's camp and LGBT content and talks about homophobia in Russia, and as a fan I must say the part with all the real life participants blew my mind. I love this movie

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Oh, and Iceland is bringing very creative and high quality contestants for some years now. Last year was amazing with Hatari and this year they had an awesome song that was a favourite of many. Russia is always bringing super professional and perfect performances in all aspects, it's hard to believe they haven't won for many years in a row by now.

My great grandmother was Icelandic, so it was exciting to watch and got me even more anxious to learn about my heritage. I get that most of the jokes are not really that accurate to Iceland. Even most of the names are more swedish in origin. But it was still fun to watch and a great movie with super catchy music.

  • @itsjosegurl

I actually LOVED the movie! It definitely needed some trimming down because it did run a little long but I had so much fun that I wasn't even really upset about the length. I thought it was genuinely funny because it felt authentically camp - the moments that were super on the nose or convenient were funny because they were self aware in that sense (especially the lyricism and obvious vocal processing). All the various songs were also shockingly really well produced and it just felt like a lot of attention to detail (maybe too much so at times, though, given the length) went into this film. I also...cried? Like....a lot? Like I never thought I'd ever relate to a Will Ferrell character, yet so many moments were genuinely heartbreaking. Maybe I have a unique perspective as someone who makes pop music and is a big dreamer and puts on colorful performances and outfits. I was just thoroughly entertained the entire time and I don't think I've watched something so fun in a long time.

Eurovision used to be a yearly event for me, but my interest somehow petered out after they started doing semifinals. My all-time favourite Eurovision song was actually an Icelandic entry, Paul Oscar in -97. I liked the movie, it was as silly and fun as I would have expected.

yep, Idol is from the UK, Got Talent is by a UK executive, and The Voice is from the Netherlands, by a Dutchie. so surprising that most of the well-known television formats are all European (well, Deal or No Deal is Dutch, Who Wants to be a Millionaire is from the UK and is British, Hell's Kitchen and MasterChef are both from the UK. they are in the U.S. because either a U.S. TV network buys the format rights for the U.S. or the European creators themselves go to the U.S. and preach their format to the U.S. TV station). and the song contest format is a format which has never been spread throughout the U.S. scene.

Little correction: eurovision is not an only Europeans competition , Eurovision (EBU) is a broadcast system also available out of Europe and all members countries are allowed to participate in the contest like Israel, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Russia. Morocco has once participated , Egypt and Lebanon could even participate if they wished and agreed the the EBU rules.

Been an avid Eurovision watcher since childhood (I’m Swedish). Heard about this movie and was really expecting this horrible Americanized trope. Instead it’s a wonderful nod to the kitchiness of the actual event. So many previous winners making appearances. Eurovision is not a serious event. It’s about all the very different cultures of Europe coming together and sharing an experience. I think the movie did this exceptionally well. People who don’t get Eurovision will miss the point of it. For those who love Eurovision it encompasses so much of what we watch it for. Over the top pop ballads, UK getting 0 points, commentary getting lost in translation, the token metal entry, France being France and no matter how much you hate your country’s entry, the huge amount of support you and your countrymen give on the big night.

10:44 FYI, It's not a "Comedy" movie per se. because if will ferrell or the director did that, it would have been like anchor man. The main theme leaned towards the love story between Lars & Sigrit and Lars' dream to win the Eurovision & become popular and laughed at by his folks. Heck I think it's even more centered on Sigrit's character. That's why it's not a typical Ferrell comedy.
