High speed trains are a much more civilized, scenic, comfortable way to travel, than planes. Minimal boarding times, and stopping in the middle of a city, instead of the outskirts, can make it FASTER, depending on where you´re going to. As a Spaniard, I caught my very first AVE in the 90s, and never used a national flight ever since. Best.

My wife and I actually rode the hi speed train from Madrid to Valencia and then back to Madrid a few days later last year on our first trip to Spain. It´s not a radial line from centralist Madrid. The only true high speed lines in Spain are strictly radials, from the capital to "the periphery". For Madrid "the periphery" is all the rest of the country included Barcelona, València or Bilbao. In fact, the lack of funds or the eternal delays in works in this line (the horrible look of the zone around Sants Central Station here in Barcelona in our days is a good example), plus the chaos in Rodalies or Commuter services both in Barcelona and in València until recent times and for the same reason (no renovation or new lines in Rodalies, a lot of funds for Madrid-Cercanias or Commuter network), were two of the many reasons for the boom of independentism in past years here in Catalonia.
