Excellent Miss Aubrey. I am a 71 year old in my seventh month hammerin' the banger. Worked on Cripple Creek all those months. After your wonderful and very clear instruction on Ole Joe Clark I know what my next song will be. Thank You... Joe Yocius Linville North Carolina
You are truly an awesome teacher. I am just converting to clawhammer and this was really helpful. I also love the trivia thrown in there. Thanks again!
This is just superb. An instructional vid done in totally the best way possible. Aubrey, your voice is simply delicious. The banjo playing is beautifully done, and the combination of the two is just great. Please move to England and teach me.
OK, this is awesome. Thank you SO much for slowing Old Joe down, I really want to learn this song, am new to clawhammer but your approach to it is incredibly instructive, and just right for where I'm up to at the moment. Plus wonderfully sung and played, of course!
and I finally got together how to pick the melody. it all happens on the downstroke w. one finger! now I will pick up the darn thing again and learn to pick properly. thank you aubrey
I'm learning this 2 finger style but this helps me understand this song a lot better then the tabs I have. Great to hear such information about the song. I'll save this for more review.
Hi Aubrey ... I have started to put favorite tutorials on my computer and play them with a bluetooth device while I am working in the kitchen. I love the nuances of the lesson, a third or fourth time around. You take your time. You are serious about instruction. My daughter doesn't like it because she is trying to sleep and she hates anything that is not Rhiana...and not Giddens. But you she sort of listens to you when she is half awake and she enjoys your style of instruction.
i love this so much. im learning Old Joe Clark right now, and this was so helpful and informative.love watching you and your passion and knowledge of such a wonderful technique
Wow - Awesome. And I understood everything you said, even Mixolidian! Yahoo! I love how clear you were on demonstrating it. Someone/anyone: Aubrey used solfaggio and described mixolidian with a ti, but that was a te, wasn't it? Or did I just mis-hear her?
The banjo you are playing, what brand is it? I own a resonator banjo made similar to it and it has no name or serial number. I think it’s one of the best sounding banjos I’ve ever owned. I would like to know what company made yours?
not to cause like a youtube comments war or anything, but based on opinion, which banjo technique (claw hammer or 3 finger picking) is harder or easier?
to tim self. get a "Reagan capo" from Janet Davis music. slides on the 5th string and is positioned up to the fret. it will raise the pitch accordingly. no more pesky rr spikes
Hi. That sounds awesome and has been really helpful. However, I'm just learning to play banjo and am having a hard time following what you're playing without tabs. I've looked at other places for Old Joe Clark tabs but (with apologies to Mike Iverson), I'd prefer to play the version that you're playing - especially since I can use the video to help me too. Do you (or anyone else visiting here) have tabs for this version? Thanks a tonne.
My way of approaching a song is more and more toward deliberate...something I do to enjoy myself not to impress others. Sometimes picking is like a rooster in a barnyard trying to show off. Two styles.
Old Joe Clark served in the War of 1812 and for his service he was given land. He was a real person, was white and was a character to be sure. Many of his descendants still live in the south. ( I once read-Rick)
Once repeated....an old story. Twice repeated...history. How about a song? G-clef.... Once repeated....\ is an old story. Twice repeated...\ is history. How this goes on Since time began, (break into waltz 3/4 time) It seems like such ...a mystery.... Yes, make it a waltz....enjoy

do you use railroad spikes?
Believe it or not, the words come from Mother Goose Rhymes. There is another name used in the Mother Goose instead of Old Joe Clark.
not to cause like a youtube comments war or anything, but based on opinion, which banjo technique (claw hammer or 3 finger picking) is harder or easier?
Scruggs style is harder and more refined.
I've done it on the dulcimer
to tim self. get a "Reagan capo" from Janet Davis music. slides on the 5th string and is positioned up to the fret. it will raise the pitch accordingly. no more pesky rr spikes
You play that old song well!
Is that an old vega?
