Apologies for the sound mute for about a minute at 10:30. There is a small amount of audio in the background that the artist copyright claimed and I had no choice but to mute that part of the video.
@TherapistReactsOfficial, men who never had a good relationship with their father... mourn what they never had, and never will have. Our society minimizes the role of fathers, and we're paying for it.
He has had over 100,000,000 views overall with everyone watching his version of James Blunt’s song. He is 18 years old and is a very gifted young man. He has ADD but his father recognized his gift and encouraged him to not back down. Lionel seems to have not heard this song because his visceral response is so evident. He was shaking by the end of the song. Iam’s voice is so soulful and he kept getting better through the season.
Thanks for sharing that. I didn’t know he has ADD. Great his father supported him. He shines with love for his father. Many of us ADD folks got the complete opposite from our father but suprisingly still love them. They were doing the best the could probably. Great young man. Artist. And song
The People of the Islands live their Truth. You can hear the love for the islands, the people, the culture. The tides and all are in their voices. You can hear their heart and soul when they sing.
Normally I don’t like when people say stuff like this. But this time, it is so true. He really is spiritual successor to IZ. They’re both such beautiful souls.
My favourite American idol contestant was yeaaaars ago. Jason Castro. Who sang somewhere over the rainbow by iz. This is my favourite contestant since . And I’m very happy he won
I have recently seen Iam in person. He is as genuine a year later as he was on this show. He has incredible support from his family as he goes out into the world, spreading his beautiful talent and his openness.
Iam was raised in his Polynesian culture. We were raised to be how he is. Genuine, sincere. He’s amazing representing the Polynesian culture for all of us.
Your culture of family is truly amazing. Although, I am not Polynesian, I was born in Hawaii. Although, my family did not live there long, I have visited and witnessed the beauty of your people first-hand.
His mother signed him up with American Idol. She's the one that ask Iam if you could sing that song. I just love Iam and yes he makes everybody cry. He also sings this song with James Blount on the last day of American Idol. It's a must see. Love always. Ontario, Canada
I was so lucky to have recently met Iam in Nashville and we spoke for several minutes. He is exactly as you would imaging him to be when you see him on TV. Sweet, kind, compassionate & open. I just love him. My son had just passed away when I first saw Iam audition & we share the same religion. I found such comfort in the pain of this video because when my heart broke for Iam & I began crying I found myself also releasing a lot of repressed pain that I had been carrying from my son's death. Like you pointed out people get uncomfortable with grief & pain & I felt like I was a burden on them when I grieved so I pushed it all away & hid it until Iam Tongi brought it all to the surface and I had a good cleansing cry. When I need that again all I need to do is listen to Iam singing this song and it helps me.
I lost my mom a year ago and i was finally was able to cry listening to Iam Tomgi. Im greatful for this beautiful soul. I was born Hawaii and lived there until i was ten. So many good memories!
Iam's cover of 'Sound of Silence' was equally compelling & soul touching, along with 'save your tears' & so many more during his american idol journey. He was the entire package, humble kind gentle uplifting encouraging always learning & his enthusiasm to get onstage to share his incredible gift is what drew me to him *as the first american idol i was happy to support & vote for. As he progressed, i felt his pull even greater than ruben studdard & willie pence (may willie pence rest in peace), and for me that was a tough row to bear, but he did it. Another commented on his one on one with adam lambert another who came from ai & made it, where iam asked how do you say goodbye to friends leaving cause he didnt want them to go which was a stark contrast to adam revealing his own honest reply albeit conceited that during his own year of competition he thought only about himself & not so much others. It was that moment, it dawned on me just how special iam is & definitely cut from a different cloth so to speak. Off air behind the scenes, iam was interacting with his fellow castmates/contestants singing & playing his guitar, to cheering them on from the wings. Even the audiences responses felt different during iams season, not just the cheers for him, but for his friends. His parents did amazing raising such a brilliant, all around good human being who now gets to share the gift engrained/etched in him from tools his dad gave him. To me thats the best legacy a parent can give their kids from stepping stones to a pathway leading to greatness of their childs making. Solo, duets, or groups, he blends interweaves so well yet you can still pick out his unique tone & voice. His versatlity along with unique gift will take him far!
Great comments. I predicted he would win after hearing his audition. His voice is magical. Not perfect but something extraordinary special! You could see the other contestants supporting him throughout the competition. They along with the audience were mesmerized by his performances. I’ve watched American Idol off and on over the years but we just happened to tune in to this first night and were hooked. We couldn’t wait until the next show. Every performance of Iam’s was a masterpiece.
Another tidbit. The other male judge, Luke was reacting to the song too. His brother passed away a few years ago and he is raising his brothers children. So that song was pretty emotional for him as well.
I knew I would cry coming into this. I've only heard the James Blunt version before. THIS was so moving! Saying goodbye to our father's, whether we're sons or daughters, is one of the most difficult times in our lives. (Just so you know, James Blunt's father ended up surviving because he got a kidney transplant) Thank you for your vulnerability. I think it's very brave to put it out there.
I watch his Journey on American Idol every day never get tired of it , I live in Hawaii on the West side Iam lives on the North side,, we all love Iam..Mahalo for hecking him out I cry to every song he does Ck it out love ya..Aloha
You need to go through each of Iam’s performances and judges comments in order. He is an amazing human and at this time only 18 years old. Such a spiritual connection to people worldwide. Look at his post Idol releases too.
Great post! I loved your insight, the way you broke things down, and how you could take your therapist hat off and just be a human being. I think you'd be a really cool dude just to chill with. Europeans have always been interesting to me. Some of the coolest peeps in the world.
😭💔🥀 5 Years prior to Watching @Iam Tonga on American Idol, I Sat in a Hospital Room for 3 Days With My Father 😭 just Waiting for Him to Leave Us!! 😭💔🥀 That Why Hes Our American Idol...a Man True to His Feelings!!! ♥️😭
I'm very thankful to have find you, I was thinking... this audition is super relatable or rather authentic. Despite the fact that my own relationship with my father is a broken one I could still feel those emotions and from my own situation I could soften this sort of stone that somewhere in my heart. Alternatively from the relationship that my father and my grandpa had, I know this song would got him "deep in the feels" as they say. The key part in your video reaction was definitely when you talk about the impulse of getting away from disconfort and those deep and heavy emotions that bring it, like sadness. If we instead took those emotions and face them wholesomely we can grow and make awesome thing, and grow wiser. Its important to do this so we don't end up cornered or limited by our painful life experiences
Id argue it’s the overcoming of sadness is what draws us to videos like this. Hope is a main driving factor and I feel most people love a good story of persevering through hard times and coming out on top. Thank you for the great reaction!
Such a beautiful & soulful rendition of this song. ❤️ I hope the judges help guide him into the right hands, people who don’t just use him as a meal ticket, but help him have a long & successful career.
It was a privilege watching each step, singing each song with Iam. His journey was a genuine one and not a manufactured sad story by the producers, even if they tried he was so pure, real and talented that it wouldn’t have worked. Thanks for your reaction!
Let me give you a little more info on all this young man went thru and why it afftect Lionel so much. Lionel lost his dad, and it was devastating to him. This reminded him of all that pain. Iam didn't want to do Monsters. His mom wanted it. He had another picked out and the producer said yes do monsters. Iam won American Idol. The first 3 or so episodes they did a lot of focusing on his dad. Then it turned to his mom, Lilly. She was there all the time. They interviewed her almost as much and she got her on fan following. IAM was humble thru all of it. He would finish a song and yell, "Love you, mom, or something, maybe walk out and kiss or hug her. While he wasn't the best singer, or showman. He was the BEST storyteller. On the final he and James Blunt, who wrote and sang Monters did a duet. I recommend you see it. It broke everyone, you don't even see Lionel. I think he stepped away, knowing his response. Iam didn't want to be a sob story. He ended up becoming someone that brought people together and became a brother to many of the other contestants. In other videos you see he's not asking advice on how to win, or improve. He would ask how do I deal with losing my friends as they leave the show. He has gone on to doing sold out venues all over the world. On an interesting note tho, he wasn't with his dad when he died. He was with family in Hawaii when Rodney passed. So he may not ever got the closure he is singing about. I think this show helped. I know this isn't your normal thing but I would ask you watch his duet with James Blunt on the final on American Idol and compare. Its different feel, and when something happens on stage James does something AMAZING and I think that was the moment Iam was finally OK.
Oh for gods sake, reading this comment had me crying all over again. It’s true that the way he sings is so much more than just hitting notes, you can see him feel everything he sings. Also big up James Blunt who shares the same talent and for writing this song
Followed his journey, voted as soon as I could when the show started. He brought me through a difficult time in my life earlier this year. Still Team Tongi
Great reaction! I’ve got a request for you. Post, it’s a short film scored by an amazing pianist Joep Beving. I think it’s up your alley even though they don’t say a word during the video. It’s around Hi Ren in length.
I love this 💓 I'd love for you to react to some evenessence songs they've also gave me goosebumps keep up the good work i am new to your channel and been binge watching 😂
I'm just watching different reactions to this video from Iam's audition, and the unintended buildup to the song, I mean. when she ask about his dad we can see like it hit like a homming misile. And Iam although with a lot of composure managed to hang on and start the song. At that moment all the world would know somehow that his performance was every bit as authentic as it can be.
Love the reaction. Thank you for this! I was wondering… do you think that we as humans are drawn to stories like this (the sad/traumatic/pained backstory) because we want to, as an empathetic and sympathetic species, see the ones who hurt triumph over their pain? Could it be a natural draw to want to watch someone struggle into success? Could it be that we can more easily relate to imperfection and strife that it makes success more validating? I have no background in psychology but I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.
I've never heard this song until I seen now and it really hits man even tho my dad is still alive he got deported when I was 7 years old and due to me/ my family being broke I have only been able to go visit him a total of 3 times since then it has been 6 years since I've seen him and the amount I miss him is crazy and bcuz of that I dread the fact that his time is getting closer and he's not around to get to spend the time he has left with him I honestly don't know if I'll be able to handle losing him or my mom I've been sober for 5 years but when that time comes im scared that ima end up relapsing from the pain
You start to swivel in your chair and you turn away from the camera when you get emotional only helps to show that men are expected to be strong and unbreakable. Some of us that have experienced this pain personally but expected to respond in reason. It is hard.
Iam Tongi’s only desire was to make his dad proud. Basically he auditioned n sang on am. Idol for his dad not the judges. His mom had a big positive influence on Iam yet when push came to shove she allowed him to choose. He has great faith in God/Jesus. Grounded Christian character. Good family support. Your explanation is correct. The 5 behaviors being 1-positive n 4-negative. One needs to experience all of these behaviors n address it accordingly or one will be unbalanced. Iam did. It’s just miraculous to watch him unfold. Iam Tongi is very special gifted w empathy but doesn’t really recognize it but he is learning very fast. He’s humble n patient. Not an unkind bone in his being. Very few young adults have this wonderful traits. Iam is now 19yo. Iam’s singing is soothing haunting velvety rich where he expresses every emotion to his fans. I’m one of his silent fans before he even finished his first audition. 😂 also bc he’s from Hawaii. My hometown. Continue to react to unknown celebrities. Aloha ❤ Kapualani Hawai’i
I think that it’s interesting that Lionel has a lot of trouble , Luke is sobbing , but Katy Perry is just slightly emotional. She’s normally the one breaking down. But this is a song I think men understand a little better . Because it’s a song about a man saying goodbye to a man. Obviously women have a hard time with losing their dads too. But as a guy, losing my dad has been the hardest thing I’ve ever been through
i have one question did you see IAM looking at his father on his right when he sang your my father you can feel my hand on your own he did see his dad there watching him and that's the part that is the best to me i lost a lot of my family and partners up until i was 50 but i still think they are there for me and im not into religion or ghosts
Trying to go through the process from anxiety and anxious is do not think about the difficulties but the goodness that produce out of the transition of how to think or feels to over come the the thoughts and feelings that the devil suggest and arouse to annoy the best of anyone
Oh man, after seeing this one as a "father goodbye song" I really, really want to see you react to Happy by NF or HOPE which is quite the opposite to this beautiful song by james blunt...
I hope William Tongui is well but he is crying with the rest of us war in Israel and Hurricane in Acapulco and mass shootings in Maine PLEASE GOD MAKE THIS STOP ❤
This audition was (by far) Iam's worst vocal rendition of the series, much of it was weak and frail. Yet it came off as something extraordinarily powerful and human. So sad, yet breathtakingly beautiful and pure.
Apologies for the sound mute for about a minute at 10:30. There is a small amount of audio in the background that the artist copyright claimed and I had no choice but to mute that part of the video.
React to money game pt3 by ren please its a great song and i think you would have alot to say about it due to his amazing storytelling!!!

Look at Joannie Rochette 2010 figure skating story.
I think as an emapth I feel more alive feeling others emotions. I'm not sure. I feel good crying for others bad emotions. I feel connected.
Trying to go through the process from anxiety and anxious is do not think about the difficulties but the goodness that produce out of the transition of how to think or feels to over come the the thoughts and feelings that the devil suggest and arouse to annoy the best of anyone
80% was the story and the song 20% was the voice
Oh man, after seeing this one as a "father goodbye song" I really, really want to see you react to Happy by NF or HOPE which is quite the opposite to this beautiful song by james blunt...
Can you react to 7 Knights by DC The Don?
Your channel might be alot bigger if you actually did reaction vids you would love the music you don't know about😊😊👍👍
not a dry eye in the house mate
We all need uncomfortable emotions, but there is not enough time to allow it.
Agreed. And that’s a real problem because we do need to process this stuff!
I hope William Tongui is well but he is crying with the rest of us war in Israel and Hurricane in Acapulco and mass shootings in Maine PLEASE GOD MAKE THIS STOP ❤
It’s all just a symptom…of being human.
This audition was (by far) Iam's worst vocal rendition of the series, much of it was weak and frail. Yet it came off as something extraordinarily powerful and human. So sad, yet breathtakingly beautiful and pure.
That the life is influenced by the devil, the world and the flesh as sin enter into the life and deranged all our oranism of the flesh.
That’s really stupid. After the song is over….that’s when TH-cam decides to copywrite? I’m calling B. S. On the whole thing.
