I don't see that anyone has mentioned Rod Argent, as yet. As their keyboardist/organist he really was a major part of their sound, and was the core of the later band that was just named his last name; Argent. Great song, another interesting response.

Well..., you've reacted to two of their classics. That really leaves "Tell Her No", which is also cool.

The Zombies were soo cool. Colin Blunstone is the one with the distinctive voice. Magic bass, and electric piano too. Later he went solo and had the odd hit. - Say you don't mind. I don't believe in miracles. What becomes of the broken hearted. All worth listening to.

A fantastic 60’s song and you can tell Santana loved it too in his cover version because he didn’t change much except some of the solos

The song has a beautiful tone and sound for being nearly 60 years old. Old Recording equipment, no autotune. Bands often
record vocals in one or two takes. Thanks for your illuminating and heartfelt discussion/thoughts on the music.

The Zombies are a vibe! I’ve loved them since this song came out. Colin, the lead singer was “groovy” back in the day and still is…still performing.

It's a common story, but I'm pretty sure that the other side of it is often enough a person who isn't being heard, says this isn't working and I have to go, leaves, and then is accused of leaving without warning or even a goodbye. One of my favorites from that period.

There were no music videos. These old '60's "videos" are just captured from TV performances using an old technology called "kinescope", before videotape existed. These were nearly always lip-synched. So you are hearing the studio version. This was a huge hit in its day. Some members went on to form Argent, who had big hit with "Hold Your Head Up" a few years later. The Zombies had a very unique sound, very quirky for the time.

Fabulous #1 hit for the Zombies, and equally fabulous covers by both Vanilla Fudge (1967 heavy psychedelic version)and Santana 1977 classic rock version). You would love them both, but for different reasons - they are completely different sounds.

ya gotta understand that clean-cut dudes like these guys did the heavy lifting that allow today's musicians to show up in dirty, unkempt clothes and grooming. Plenty of fine musicians got derailed in the 50s, 60s and 70s and freed things up for the zeitgeist.

Are you talking about the Rickenbacker 12-string electric guitar? Popularized by the Byrds, and repeated by Tom Petty. Many bands picked up on it for the jangly sound.

I think you're pretty much got it and I'm trying to think of something I can add be in my age and the way that I experience it which obviously has changed since I first heard it a long time ago up to now.
But even just now listening to it, it's got that Basic Energy to it it I don't know it's hard to describe I mean it's obviously almost all rock and roll is about fucking but it's just translates more than you would think to the Modern Way even that people dance and stuff, it's just hard to picture at first until you feel what the rhythms are underneath and the overall just kind of attitude that goes with it. And then it makes perfect sense.

You should check out their masterpiece album "Odessey and Oracle" from 1968. Unfortunately, the band had split up by the time it was released and it was received indifferently. But it since became a cult classic and the band's surviving members have re-grouped to perform it live between 2008 and 2019.

Great reaction to a great song! Loved the Zombies since the 60's.
    Just a personal take...
I always interpreted the lyrics leading up to and including the "she's not there" line as meaning she has an alluring appearance but she's vacuous, empty. I didn't interpret that line to mean she wasn't physically there anymore.

PLEASE READ ALL:: While this MUST SEE/HEAR Classic is perfect for Halloween,, It's also great anytime,, The Guess Who - "Shakin' All Over ~ Skelton Dance video is a MUST!!..A TRULY GENIUS pairing of a classic song & a rare/early Walt Disney cartoon series known as "Silly Symphonies",, this episode titled "The Skelton Dance" (which the FULL original/cartoon/episode/sound) is also well worth watching..While watching this genius pairing,, it is IMPORTANT to keep reminding yourself that this cartoon/series/episode is almost 100 YEARS OLD,, while that makes it incredible,, it also makes it crystal clear how/why Walt Disney would become a legendary icon..As mentioned earlier,, this song is a classic (1965),, BUT,, it is also a cover,, the original was written & recorded by Johnny Kidd & The Pirates "Shakin' All Over" (1960) Which the song/hit brought them worldwide fame,, A bit of trivia:: Johnny Kidd (Fredrick Albert Heath) Unfortunately would die in a tragic head on collision at only 30 years old..Part of Johnny's legacy would be him being credited for the aesthetic of groups/bands dressing up/wearing costumes/creation of characters..Nick Simper (Bassist) was also in the car,, but only suffered some minor cuts & a broken arm..He would later become a member of the legendary & iconic rock group "Deep Purple"..I just thought that maybe you would enjoy and/or use some/all of this information to relay to your subscribers,, should you choose to react/review this classic..Sincerely,, Your loyal subscriber,,
    "Happy"
