After hearing the way that you describe things and the ideas that you share show that you understand music in a way that most will never know - even those already established in the music industry! I wish that we could get together some time and have a couple beers and make a documentary about your life and career. I bet it would make an awesome number one movie of all time! So many stories and people and things that you have had a part in and so many lives that you have changed. This story is one for the books! Talk about irony - this one is definitely the epitome of it. I am glad that you have decided to share these with us and have a channel where we can talk to you directly and have a better understanding of the music scene from your point of view and be entertained at the same time. WOW!!! It's all I can say about this story in a nutshell. A lot of weird things have happened and this is no different but it sounds like a cult classic in the making. Thank you once again for sharing this with the rest of us!

      Who should listen to songwriter Mark Hudson tell his story about how Aerosmith wanted him to write a song for them. He did heard nothing for a few weeks untill Steven Tyler calls him up to say the songs too sad. The song sat around for years. His rep calls him up one day to say another band is interested. Heard nothing for months. The manager of the band reaches out to say the band hates the song but that he is going to make them record it. It becomes the band's first number one hit ever. 25 years in the band has announced they ending.

    Thing i learned about this, besides that Rick is a great Producer, was the fact the song 'Carolina' was absolutely no different that the thousand others written and played just like it...i guess the difference of a number one hit and a number 99 hit is the half a million dollars thrown at it to make it number one...thats how it works folks~

      Someone in the record company decides that the whole package is right for the times, and they are confident that the band can record enough saleable records, perform enough tours and keep their sh1t together long enough for the company to recoup their investment and make a bit of money for candy as well. IMO, the producer has a LOT to do with it. Listen to some demos and then listen to what gets made in the studio. Producers make a BIG difference.

    My crazy music story. I was a CPA tax specialist who just picked up an elderly well-to-do new client. Because they were in poor health, I visited them at their home. Everything was normal in their financial situation, except for a royalty statement from a recording label showing a hefty amount. When I asked about it, here’s the amazing story they shared: their only daughter had left home at an early age and had followed rock bands closely. Eventually she became married to a member of the band Steppenwolf, who shared writing credit for “Magic Carpet Ride.” He died in a motorcycle accident making their daughter a widow and owner of those royalties. Then she was gunned down in a drug gang shootout, making her parents the heirs to the royalties just at the time CDs were replacing vinyl and all those great rock songs produced a gusher of new royalties. I had to bring them a copy of my Steppenwolf CD so they could see and hear what had produced that royalty check they had received!

    Rick, I gotta disagree with you that it was "All Luck." Because in that interview, he had just been rejected by a record label, and rather than getting mad or just bummed and wanting to go home, he said, "Ok, fair. But if you had signed us, what would have been the next thing you'd have us do?" I don't see that as luck at all, I see that as a man taking life by the horns and making the best out of a demoralizing situation. Extrapolating that over his whole career for the things and stories that we'll never know about, I'm just betting that it's no accident that they got there one day.

      I agree that their mindset put them in a good spot to succeed. Still, getting #1 takes luck. I'm sure that numbers 2 all the way through 100 took some grit and determination and a good portion of luck with it. There are a lot of musicians out there.

    • @djjazzyjeff1232
      @djjazzyjeff1232 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@kennethyee5161 I’m not saying it didn’t play a factor. Mostly I think the difference between #1 and anywhere else in the top 10 is timing. When I looked at the charts and what else was on the chart at the time, it’s not like that song was going up against any real MASSIVE banger hit songs at the time and just out performed them, it’s because there was sort of a lul at the time and they slipped into the gap. But I was just speaking more broadly, I don’t really believe in luck when it comes to career and being successful, I believe in that if you put in the work tirelessly, you make your own luck. Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.

    You mention NEEDTOBREATHE and how you had worked with them, too, as you’re telling this story. I can’t believe I didn’t know that. That’s what digital has done to me. I was a liner notes reader as a kid and even more so as I got more interested in music production and ended up at Belmont U in Nashville studying audio production and getting my degree in the music business.
    I’ve been watching your TH-cam channel for a while now, enjoying your content, but had no idea you worked with one of my favorite bands, if not my favorite band, of the last 10 or so years. I think NEEDTOBREATHE might be the most underrated band of the last decade.

So props to you both and for them actually being honest and sharing in the wealth. How much of the killer gear behind you would you say you bought with that writing credit alone? Just curious, and since have you have even more hits together with other country bands? Word up Rick , I’m from Rochester definitely heard about you and your ties to the area ish... killer Toto video where you broke down the parts to Roseanna. We ALWAYS had new music playing, wherever we were. You give music a new dimension for me, and many of the things I was picking out of songs, but never had an appropriate name for, now have a name and, musically, either just make sense or are/were groundbreaking new approaches. Parmalee is from my hometown. I grew up playing music with those guys. Great group of guys. Growing up I never would have thought they would have gone country. Loved rock music. Loved blues. But they seemed to fall right in the pocket as people like Jason Aldean was coming in to the scene. Growing up in the south and with the accents, we've always had a "southern rock" sound and I think that's why the transition was so effortless when they decided to take that route. They weren't pandering. The country scene was evolving. Just my take. Awesome job on the song too Rick!

    • @djjazzyjeff1232
      @djjazzyjeff1232 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I believe you when you say they weren't pandering. But I have to say, they were being a bit "opportunistic." I'm an independent rock artist, and if I wanted an easy out right now, it seems like country would be the way to go. As far as genres go, Country is just a much larger genre. Country is like the US and Rock is like the UK, as far as population. So it's very tempting, genuinely, except when you're from Minnesota, like me, you're pretty, how should I say, "Geographically excluded" lol.
