    Mooie test. Op de bijboten bij de huur in de BVI zitten Mercury motoren. Iedereen sleept die rubberboten maar mee achter de z3ilboot. Ploft alles op het strand. En de motoren doen het altijd.
    Joke van de verhuurders : als jullie terugkomen dan wel één bijboot afleveren, en liefst dezelfde.

    Ah - had sent you guys a message to understand your perspectives for the AST, so this video is super timely. I am entering zone to buy my tender so looking at OCT and AST as options, along with inflatables. My one concern on these non-inflatables is how tippy they are - the OCT seems very tippy but AST seems more stable. I guess my other concern is that these are so nice - theft in certain areas is a much higher likelihood.

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This one is not tippy at all (and I tried harder than Marijke appreciated). And you’re for the coming year a brave thief if you steal an AST with a jockey seat as it might be very obvious that you stole it .....

    Looks like a very well designed and stable tender. It should compliment the aesthetics of the Outremer quite nicely.
    20hp outboard will not be over powered from my experience using motorised tenders.

    Congratulations. It looks like a great option, I've always been surprised we don't see more jockey seats on cruising tenders. Have you thought through your boarding ladder options to get in the boat from the water? Please post when you sort out that or other details.
    Also curious why not Yamaha or Suzuki (EFI) which seem to very popular.

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the back end of the Coast there are steps on the waterline to come back on board, so only the one without jockey seat has a boarding ladder.
      I didn’t look at other engines, we were used to Honda but this Mercury was lighter and it worked fine

  • @vokstar

    I always think there is good weight and bad weight, bad weight is from poor design, good weight is smart design or an acceptable compromise. Incidentally did you consider an electric tender? or was the weight too much? Thanks for the vid. Cheers.

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The boatshed was selling torqueedos as well, still twice the price and comparable weight including the extra batteries when you choose the equal power version to a 20hp

    • @vokstar
      @vokstar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CatGreatcircle Interesting, I thought they would've been heavier, potentially significantly so... The price tho is a sticking point no doubt though. Cheers.

    Looks like an OC Tender copy, very noice 👍

    • @rykehuss3435
      @rykehuss3435 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Except OC offers no console, no wheel and no jockey seats for any of their tenders. Theyre all rear seat, tiller controlled. So its not a copy, but just another option to consider depending on your needs. Because OC doesnt have any of that, it has more available floor space of course. I think AST is better for adventures in unfamiliar waters, since you can mount a side plotter on the console column

  • @carstenholyshit5066
    @carstenholyshit5066 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello you two,
    Thanks for your informative test. This tender seems to be a good alternative to aluminum ribs in terms of weight. Carbon makes it possible. But 11.900,00€ (without console), are a lot of nuggets only for firewater, says Chief Drunken Manatee. ;-)
    Ok, everyone has to decide for themselves.

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Including console and vat, the Coast is only with console. The difference with the Highfield incl engine was not that big %-wise. Weight savings on other parts of the new boat are (way) more expensive 😇

    Nice video! Pleasantly surprised it still works well with 4+ people despite the center seat.
    I mean....with the center seat you're still just under the total weight of a more traditional inflatable dinghy without center console, right?

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Saving 60 kg on the Highfield CL380 with the small side console and the little bench all the way aft ....

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That weight saving per kg is a lot more efficient (read cheaper) than buying a carbon mast, especially with that arm to the COG

  • @Ilona999999
    @Ilona999999 ปีที่แล้ว

    30 kg extra for a console seems a lot... Why not have a tiller extension and just stand in the dinghy? That's what we do and it's perfect to keep you dry. If you stand in a good position and hold on to a line from the bow, it's not unstable. And it saves a lot of weight + space. We do it with our OCTender (whichwe love).

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  ปีที่แล้ว

      We like the jockey seat a lot and the extra weight is not an issue for the 55. We tried the OC as well but found it already very unstable sitting down. The AST itself is already a lot more stable than the OC and having the weight in the middle makes it very comfortable to drive

    • @IlonaLucish
      @IlonaLucish ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CatGreatcircle unstable? We can sit with two grown-ups on one side and it won't flip at all. It feels super stable to me :D I always enter by stepping on the side, so it's really not unstable. Maybe different feel but really easy to get used to :) But everyone should do what they feel good about of course. I personally would never want to have the weight, space (and money) it costs, I rather just stand up and have all the benefits of being in that position and not the downside. But I'm happy you're happy :) just giving my experience so other people can make their own decision :)

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  ปีที่แล้ว

      There are several OC and AST tenders in our GLYWO fleet so we did have the chance to compare them really well. Did you have the chance to try the AST with and without jockey seat yet?

    • @IlonaLucish
      @IlonaLucish ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CatGreatcircle No, haven't had the chance to compare them, only drove the OCTender (btw the longer version, 3.5m). I drove the shorter version very shortly, didn't like that one very much.
      I love the driving capabilities of the 3.5 OCT. We've got a 25hp outboard on it, which isn't necessary, we don't often use full throttle but it's nice to have it when needed and nice to go super fast when water is flat. Deeper V would sometimes be better but I do appreciate it that the tender has so little draught, has a nice interior shape and is so lightweight.. Always compromises

  • @ila3028
    @ila3028 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Love the tender! what about using one of those electric engines, shouldn't it save more weight? are they reliable?

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The electric torqueedo corresponding with 20 hp is even a bit heavier including the batteries and more than double the price. Maybe on next tender in a couple of years, same might be true for the cat itself.

    wat zijn de belangrijkste verschillen tussen de OC en AC tender?

    • @CatGreatcircle
      @CatGreatcircle  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wij kennen de OC tender niet goed genoeg om daar al te veel over te zeggen, hebben er maar een klein stukje mee gevaren bij St. Tropez. OC Tender heeft geen versie met console dus voor de variant waar wij naar op zoek waren (ASTender Coast) gaat de vergelijking sowieso niet (volledig) op. Op het eerste gezicht lijkt de AST Beach 340 iets stabieler dan de OC 350, met een diepere V in de boeg en een vlakkere achterkant maar wellicht kan iemand die met beiden meer ervaring heeft daar iets over roepen.
