Hi Scott! Great to have you back! Thank you SO much for this post. I've been trying to invent some fantasy/SciFi vehicles, and struggling. Watching this video - and the thinking process underlying the drawing process - made a HUGE difference when I sat back down - it was a whole different ball game.
This is so much better than focusing on the ornamental aspects, and getting caught up in 'piling on the fiddly bits' - which never comes out looking very convincing anyway. I found that if I considered the proportions first, then the shape and placement of the major elements, working from the general to the specific, everything flowed much more smoothly, and I was much more satisfied with the results.
I looked up side views of a bunch of vintage roadsters and just started with the wheel base, then evaluating the major shapes and angles and how they related to one another, and so on. By the time I got to the fiddly bits, I only had to figure out a couple to bring it all together. That helped a LOT. Next thing you know, I am off and running, making cool looking (and fairly convincing) drawings of imaginary vehicles, and having FUN.
If it looks cool before you add the fiddly bits, you're good to go. If it doesn't, all the fiddly bits in the world won't help.

Hey Scott, thank you so much for these videos. As a high school student these and past videos of yours help so much, not only understanding design and drawing, but inspires me countless times to continue with my work. I hope you understand how big of an influence people like you have, you and many others really help jump start my creativity and my drive as an aspiring artist. As for future videos, what's your take on reference, talking about reference, the importance or advantages of having it, as I am learning, reference is huge when trying to help design or create elements within an original artwork? Can't wait to see what is in store for the future. Cheers!

Scott do you think you could do some more stuff on environment sketching? I feel like I struggle with keeping consistent scale when drawing back in space. Having a hard time balancing between thinking about composition while thinking about perspective. I want my stuff to have more depth.
tddavis hey, I’ve had the same problem, try overlapping the objects in your environments in front of each other. It helps achieve the a sense of space. For scale try to use other objects as reference and relate everything to the horizon line. Hope that helps man.
also as the objects get closer use thicker lines and as they go away maybe even lose some lines....at the top of my mind is Moebius, check him out if you haven't already

May I ask, what kind of pen is that? Who makes it? And also the paper, is that Marker paper? It appears to have zero bleed through. Very nice grade of people.

How do you decide upon the width in top view based on your side view? Any tips?
If anyone else knows you can answer too :)
Easiest way is to sketch the top view and then get the basic idea of the width versus the length. Once you know the ratios you can use ellipses or cubes in perspective to estimate the proper proportions. When drawing a car I usually use three wheels for the width. Do you already have my How to Draw book? There are a lot of video tutorials as part of that book that cover this idea of blocking out a proportional box in perspective.
@@scottrobertsondesign but in top view you already have the lenght and width...lets say i can visualize the side view of a helicopter...i draw the side view....what now? How do i know the appropiate width for the helicopter?
Or a coffe maker side view versus the width of the coffe maker?
Just estimate the proportion and hope it turns out good in perspective?

@@scottrobertsondesign could you give me a resource for this subject? Have you got a dvd / book talking about packaging a car or helicopter by first drawing elevation views(top view side view) first of them and then putting them into perspective? I would definitly Buy It RIGHT NOW!! Thank you alot
@@MathBlue You need to use a cube or ellipse in perspective to measure the foreshortened width of the object. I just looked, pages 166-173 should help you.

i use our drawing to make vinyl sticker odd race car or spacecraft. is that a "king size demon" guaranteed to crush the competition by 25 tons ~ the wheels an caveman as the figure . that big fender style like from car'toon comic..

How much of eraser do you use when you think you need changes in your drawing?
I only erase when using a graphite pencil. Otherwise I work with pens and markers that are permanent and they force you to think before you commit to your mark on the page.
Any tips on getting to that stage of being sure to commit before drawing?
