    Excellent review. Your reviews and my experience with testing the S series cameras and renting other brands convinced me to place an order for the S1R and the 24-70. The S1H will round out my kit later. As far as weight is concerned, I come from that generation that took heavy view cameras, medium format Hasselblad, lenses and heavy tripod across landscapes because of the value we placed on the highest image quality in the final print. And yet these cameras were a joy to use relative to our expectations. The LUMIX series falls into that category for me and with an ergonomics and lens quality that easily surpass the best at that time. In the end, the right tool for the job. It’s so easy to take what’s good for granted.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Frederic, thank you for watching! Yes I really love the ergonomics of the S series cameras. They really nailed it in terms of the body shape, controls ..etc . (ok i don't like the power switch on the S1, S1R.. but that's really the only major thing i would complain) Enjoy your S1R! And thanks again for watching the video

    Hey @RIchard Wong in your experiences over time would the weight of the 24-70 mounted on the smaller s5 potentially warp the lens mount on the s5 since it would make it so front heavy? if so have you found any solution to support its weight? (very uncommon question I know, but it is super concerning how heavy this 24-70 is. it is like having a bowling ball mounted to the camera haha)

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      when you say "wrap the lens mount" do you mean damaging the lens mount? If so i think the mount should be strong enough for a 24-70 2.8.
      It's heavy but not THAT heavy. Usually the lenses that are really heavy would have it's own tripod mount for you to install on tripod/monopod. But as always, it's always a good idea to hold the camera with a hand on the lens if it's anything bigger than a 70-200 2.8. Doesn't matter what mount/system :)

    I've bought the 24-70mm and I am really blown away by the quality! It became my main workhorse and it delivers great images. I have one annoying issue though: when I focus manually, I can see "stepping". The focus area jumps in little steps and that does not look too good. It's more noticeable whit close ups. When I use the area focusing by taping on the screen however, the focus transition is smooth.
    Do I miss a setting in the menu to get smooth manual focusing?

      @patrickhuynh393 Yeah, I concur! We have it on our S1H, so it is balanced. It's really a beast. One trick I found out: keep the focus clutch on autofocus and switch to "manual focus" on the camera body. This way, there is less "stepping" when focusing.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Steve, I feel the 24-70 has better IQ than the 24-105. Better sharpness, less distortion. But I haven't done side by side comparison to confirm that. And re close focusing ability, the 24-70 is OK. But the 24-105 definitely is better as that lens is almost a macro lens!

  • @2ndviolinman
    @2ndviolinman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    In the brick wall section of this video, is distortion correction applied, not applied, or baked in? There is some small distortion evident- is the lens itself that good, or is it partially corrected in software?

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have no apply any distortion correction in post processing . I can't answer for sure if the RAW file has bake in correct that is automatically applied. Maybe some of my viewer can tell us if you know for sure

    • @2ndviolinman
      @2ndviolinman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRealRichardWong Just wondering, as the 24mm corner doesn't sharpen on stopping down. Some lenses in other systems, when images are opened in Lightroom, for instance, have corrections applied that cannot be turned off. I'm suspicious of correction stretching because of the corners @24mm. Or maybe it's just well corrected for distortion, with soft corners @24.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be. I know Nikon would bake in the distortion correction and it's not easy to turn off. So possible Panasonic do the same but I can't say yes or no at this stage

      Richard Wong Yes, it only makes the sound when camera is on and zooming. I can only hear it a quiet room and the eye to the viewfinder. It’s like a gear or something. Sounds like aperture ring clicks only much quieter.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevevansak7324 quite likely the camera tries to adjust the aperture? Do you hear that if you put the lens cap on?

    • @stevevansak7324
      @stevevansak7324 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Richard Wong Thanks for all of the replies! Yes, it is the same sound as changing aperture. However, I’m in manual mode with a constant aperture. Lens caps on or off makes for the same sound. I’m doing some research now and others are finding the same sound so I’m a bit relieved. One user tells me the lenses are designed to close down the iris along the zoom range although it is a “constant aperture” lens. I’m a bit baffled by that as I’m not an engineer. So it appears my lens is normal. I’m a stills shooter primarily so this doesn’t really bother me. I just wanted to make sure I did not receive a defective lens.

    Hi Richard! I finally got the Lumix S Pro 24-70mm. I am very happy with it. It is a real work horse and the image quality is very good. I have two questions, if you would be kind enough to share your insight.
    The lens emits a high pitched, quite audible beeping when auto focusing. Not in photo mode, only in film mode, single and continuous. Do you notice it too?
    Furthermore: Dale Baskin of DP Review talks (at 1:24) in their recent youtube video: Explainer: Panasonic Lenses for Video, about step-less aperture. And doing so, they show a scene (two women on boat) with the notification Lumix S Pro 24-70mm 2.8 on top. The scene gets darker, showcasing a step-less decrease in aperture. Did I miss something? It seems to me that the Lumix S Pro 24-70mm has no such function. I own the lens and I use it with my S1H and I have been researching this without success. Can you confirm that this capability really exists. Thank you!

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really aware of the high pitched beeping but it's being a while since i last used the lens.
      re the stepless aperture.. i think they are talking about how the camera (or lens) would smoothly do the transition when you changing the aperture value? instead of a sudden jump from say 2.8 -> 3.2.. it would do a smooth continuous transition

    • @stevestrasser6833
      @stevestrasser6833 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheRealRichardWong Exactly! That's what stepless aperture does with some lenses. "Smooth exposure adjustments when transitioning between f stops". It is a nice feature but the 24-70mm does not have it. At least, I have not found it. Thanks Richard!
