I like how it has usb power plus alkaline batteries. Good little radio to keep in the car.

It is indeed a good choice, there are many other types, you can visit the store if you need it

Nice review, thanks. I have been pleasantly surprised by this super-cheap radio. My interest was mainly SW listening. For music listeners, it's definitely not the best choice (the V115 is as you've pointed out).
To me, it has better SW reception than the V115, as it suffers less from interference from the LCD screen which are an annoyance on the V115.
The main drawback of the V111 I've found out is that it tends to eat batteries very quickly, despite the ability to turn the clock display off. It shows when being operated, as the LCD backlight tends to fade visibly according to the produced audio.

It's good for range testing my homemade FM and AM Transmitter. It's a neat little product! Try it out.

Hello, Ria, as I wanted to say "thanks" for your review of the Retekess V-111 AM/FM/LW/SW Portable Radio! Great radio with DSP and a great low price! The SW section in the V-111 is more sensitive due to a quieter digital LCD screen vs V-115 & its Dot Matrix LCD!

it would be enough to hear some stronger signals on shortwave with that.

The AA cells feature is very important for emergency grab and go bags, as I try to standardize everything in it to be AA compatible. Unfortunately I didn't succeed.

All of my handheld amateur radios have cases for disposable batteries. It’s a must for SHTF.

Thank you Ria, I enjoy your show. I recently purchased the V115 which is how I found your channel. Could you recommend a small radio similar to the V115 that does have single side band? Thanks again 🙂

I have a charger for NiMH AA cells that will charge from the USB port of a solar panel; so I don't even need 110V, just some fair skies.

... And we hear one side of the story on ALL of our bands.
In my humble opinion based on 15 years immersion in open source geopolitics, Russia has no more propaganda than we have. I would go as far as to say that Russians are better informed than we are. Best regards, VK1AAP.

Thanks to you and crash course ham -- JOSH
You both tested these cheap type shortwave radios receivers recently...
Last year I bought a small "prunus" radio like this off Amazon,
It did SD card, regular USB, record, am, fm, and shortwave, charching from USB also. $20 bucks also.
Would you mind reviewing it? I'd like feedback.
Also. Purchased a 12 dollar shortwave radio 25 foot long (a cord with a 3.5 "jack" on 1 end, and alligator clip on the other end) hf antenna from a guy on there he guantees better hf reception when used.
This radio has a short little antenna.
But I think it might be good for those shtf moments.... 😀

I think that is the Prunus J-401, which is like a slightly improved version of the V115. I bought mine from Amazon (Canada) about 2 years ago for less than $25 CAD on sale. Sometimes they sold out I noticed. Performance is similar to the V115, but the UI, and industrial design seems better. I wish it uses AA though, but it's the BL-5C instead. The hidden feature is that it will act like a sound card and USB storage device when hooked up to a computer via the USB. This is not mentioned at all. Very versatile device, but not the best AM and SW receiver of course.

I think the best is to look for a used Sony SW radio on the used market like eBay etc. They were made in Japan. Also Sangean should still make some models in Taiwan, but not very sure, especially with a budget constrain.
