Happy to see you enjoy this masterpiece. It doesn't matter that you started with this, the important part is that you HAVE seen it. Imho it's the best iteration of the Joker since it depicts a human, non over-the-rop version of an ambiguous villain. How one came to be is more interesting than the acts of violence that spawns from entertainment purposes. Though, there is nothing wrong with mindless action-hero stuff. Yet we see too few of these Jokers in movies and unfortunately that is the reason that creates a disconnect: we can't reach the layers of the character and form an understanding and appreciation for their existence. This is double true in real life and.. is a reason why this world is not as good as it can be.

This movie is a fantastic, non-canonical origin story for the Joker. Many books, comics, movies, games, and shows have tackled the Joker's origin (all of them slightly different). The most commonly held view is that no one knows what his true origin is (not even the Joker himself). Sometimes he makes up stories about how he got to where he is, but even he isn't sure it's the truth (sometimes he even knows it's a lie). I love that they keep him mysterious and, to me, this movie is just another story told by an unreliable narrator.

  • @LittleGalaxyBoy
    @LittleGalaxyBoy 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

This film is such an unique introduction to the world of Gotham for someone who hasn't watched any Batman media prior to this. I Personally wouldn’t recommend viewing Joker (2019) as a canonical take on the characters, as it feels very much like its own thing. The film presents a more 'grounded' reality, both in its depiction of Gotham and in characters like Arthur Fleck, who is an original creation for the movie. While it’s a compelling film about a man struggling with mental health, with a Gotham twist, it doesn’t really serve as a true 'Joker' film. At least, not until the end. Arthur Fleck essentially represents a narrative that the Joker from the comics might create as a fake origin story for himself.
In the film, Thomas Wayne is portrayed in a fairly tasteless way, coming across as an outright jerk compared to his comic counterpart. In the comics, and in most renditions, Thomas is compassionate, with a strong moral compass. He’s often depicted as a respected doctor and philanthropist, a figure of integrity.
The film also flips a major dynamic from the comics. Traditionally, the Joker is born from Batman’s actions, emerging during Bruce’s first years as the Dark Knight. However, in the film, it’s the opposite. The actions of the Joker indirectly lead to the death of the Waynes, setting the stage for the eventual rise of Batman about 15 years later. Assuming this Bruce becomes Batman around age 25, as in the comics, the film changes this iconic origin in a significant way. Overall, this film takes a very different approach to the character and shouldn't be used as a reliable reference for future Batman-related projects.
Hopefully, you enjoy the Nolan Trilogy. Like Joker, it's also a very 'grounded' take on the world of Batman, meaning there are no supernatural elements, metahumans, or anything beyond our own reality. Batman Begins (2005) is my personal favourite because it feels the most like a comic-book Batman film. Gotham looks great, and the overall aesthetic is my favourite in the trilogy. However, after Begins, Gotham starts to feel more like a typical American city, losing a lot of its personality. Additionally, certain characters are stripped of their more comic-book origins to fit into this grounded world. Ra's Al Ghul and Bane being two examples.
The Batman (2022) did an amazing job at being grounded but maintaining a great Gothic Gotham City that's up there with Batman '89 and Batman Returns for the best live action Gotham City. I could also see Matt Reeve introducing more fantastical elements as well, villains such as Clayface to contrast the grounded stories told so far and take both Batman and Gotham by surprise. Batman '89 along with Returns are the most fantastical Batman films, Very cool art direction and my personal favourite Gotham put to screen. I feel like James Gunn's up in coming DC Universe is going to fully embrace the fantastical elements of the comics as well.
But I hope you have a blast with your Batman adventures.

"The worst part about having a mental illness is that people expect you to behave as if you dont."
So many comments here missed the point of the movie.
This isn't the Joker "The Clown Prince of Crime." This is Arthur, a man struggling with mental/emotional issues in a toxic society that fosters those issues.
So few people see Arthur because they want to see comic book Joker. They want a guy in clown paint getting punched by a guy in a bat mask.
This movie is inspired by Taxi Driver and King of Comedy. A few comic book names are used as references because it would draw in a broader audience that otherwise wouldn't have seen it but that's all the majority end up seeing.
Even with the prior film inspirations so much of this is based on real issues. The lack of mental health support, fractured toxic society, fractured toxic homes, children being tied to radiators and abused was way more common than people want to look back on, Arthur's compulsive laughter is a real condition, a person shooting someone on live entertainment TV or shooting themselves because of mental illness.
But almost everyone shifts their focus to "that little boy was Bruce Wayne..."

0:56 Don’t get your hopes up about seeing Batman and Robin together anytime soon! :(
Modern Batman projects have really shied away from including Robin alongside Batman. The last time we saw Robin in a Batman film was Batman & Robin back in 1997 over 26 years ago! though he does play a significant role in animation, like Batman: The Animated Series and in films like Batman: Under the Red Hood, it’s a real shame that a whole generation hasn’t been introduced to Robin if they've only watched the live-action movies. And honestly, I don’t count John "Robin" Blake from The Dark Knight Rises as a true representation of Robin. It felt more like a "Hey, look, we mentioned Robin!" moment instead of actually giving us the character. Just having your legal name be Robin doesn’t really count.

@@LippsReacts From what I’ve heard, James Gunn’s DCU (DC Universe) will have a Batman who’s already in his prime, active for a good number of years and already has the Bat Family formed. Since Superman: Legacy (2025) is kicking off the new DCU, it probably means we won’t see this new Batman, along with Robin, until later in the decade. But it would be cool if The Batman 2 (whenever it comes out) introduces a Robin, especially since it would be a great contrast to Robert Pattinson’s moody take on the character. Pattinson’s Batman will still continue on as its' own Elseworlds universe so that's not going anywhere soon.

I remember watching this movie for my 1st out of 3 times in the cinema, when a family of mom, dad, older sister and younger brother sat on the row in front of me. In the first scene, where Arthur laughs out of pain and despair, the young boy (around 10 years old) whispered to his mom "I don´t think, that I wanna watch this movie". The family sat still for another 5-10 minutes and then left with a sad boy.
This movie is not a superhero/supervillain movie. It´s a social study of men at the very rock bottom of society, who suffers in silence and experiences nothing but alienation from the world around them. I am so happy, that Hollywood had the courage to make this movie, because I think, it´s the most relevant and important movie of the last 20 years for the forgotten but suffering men of our Western World.

This was a different n uniquely dark portrayal of the Joker. Heath Ledger's Joker had been a bit dark but that was nothing compared to this one. It works as a separate movie, not as a part of Batman movie because Bruce was a kid n the Joker was grown up already. Christopher Nolan's trilogy of Batman is iconic.
The sequel to this movie is completely different. It's more of a musical than anything else so there's not much of a continuation on the plot other than Joker meeting HQ.

I tried very hard to like the sequel.
Some parts were okay I guess.

it depends! I may bite the bullet and see it in theatres since the ratings are so low. Will also depend on the timing of it's release because I am about to go to London for 4 months and idk if it will release on streaming world wide. I did see it was coming to vudu soon.
