It's my understanding that Coach Shanahan made the ultimate decision for taking the ball first. If true, the player's knowledge of the rules becomes irrelevant. Unless, the Forty-nine player's made the decision to take ball.

I would love to hear Chris’s take if the coach who made this call was not called Kyle Shanahan. As an analyst you need to be blind to personalities and focused on situations. He seems to always have a problem here with the Niners/Kyle. I’m a Niners fan but this was inexcusable on Kyle. If Andy and Spags are drilling OT rules into the Chiefs players heads there’s probably a good bet that it’s important.

At the same time, the players not all knowing wasn't a difference maker. The decision was. And I'll defend Shanahan, because there's an alternate universe where he gives KC the ball first and they rapidly score on an exhausted 49ers defense, then a rested Chiefs defense pins their ears back and stops the 49ers. Then everyone is hating on Shanahan for not resting his defense. And there's another world where the chiefs are held to a field goal and the 49ers get the ball third and Kyle looks like a genius.
Everyone is more sure of their opinion a week later with the benefit of hindsight. Kyle had to make that choice in the moment.
And of course, Andy Reid deserves credit for having prepared for this situation all year, but he also went to overtime in the AFC championship 3 years in a row, so maybe it's less that he's a genius and more that he too has the benefit of hindsight

I'm gonna struggle to believe analytics would tell you to take the ball first, unless the sample size includes all of the overtimes before the rule change. Also, analytics shouldn't make all of your decisions for you, it's a tool, that you as a NFL head football coach, should be able to discern whether or not the result of analytics makes logical sense in the moment.

Andy Reid hammered the ot rules into his players for a reason. And Shanahan told the players to take the ball first , so even if the players did know the rules it doesn't matter. It was Kyle's decision & he told the players to receive . Hardman didn't even realize they won the game when he caught the touchdown. Your a casual fan so of course you would know the ot rules because your sitting on your phone & can look them up. The player's are worried about remembering the schemes & playbook & what's happening on the field. Can tell you've never played any kind of organized sports before.

9er fan, not one of Kyle's homeboys, but the OT decision was correct, our D needed time to recoup. It's simple, KC made plays to win and 9ers didn't. 9ers had a chance to win at end of regulation and in OT.

At that point in the game, you need that first down as if it's the game, because it is! A first equals a last second FG (or close enough) and thus Mahones has no time to get anymore points. Over time rule is not even 'new.' It's been in place for 3 years. Mahomes said they strategized on the scenario so much that he became sick and tired of hearing about it. Chiefs are dangerous enough with Mahomes, but they are very well coached.

Here's my issue. When he made the decision, the vast majority of people weren't sure what the choice should be. A week later, EVERYONE suddenly knows exactly what to do. Everyone is acting like they could outcoach shannahan as if they don't have the benefit of hindsight.
And I'm still not 100% sure that giving the chiefs the ball is the right choice. I'm sure in Shannahans mind, with how tired the defense was, that would be basically immediately giving the Chiefs a touchdown. The result would be that the 49ers would essentially have to score a touchdown and a 2pt conversion to win. Otherwise, he has to hand the ball back to the chiefs, who can win with a field goal. He figured that letting his defense rest gave him the better chance at stopping KC.
In hindsight, that's the wrong choice, especially knowing now that the Chiefs would have gone for two anyway.
My point is that there's a lot of loud voices who are literally Monday morning quarterbacking a decision that had never had to be made before.

Analytics would be based on a bunch of data across multiple games and multiple scenarios. The issue is Patrick Mahomes in that situation is like a 1 in 1,000,000. Similar to Brady. So when analytics are factoring in games played by bad QB’s you aren’t seeing the potential for greatness in a spreadsheet of numbers.

Thank you for this video assessment. I see people parroting this idea that under no circumstance should a coach choose to drive first in OT. There is more factors to consider obviously, the most important being if you want to put your offense under immediate pressure in OT

KC said they would've gone for 2 if it were a tied game at the end of their OT possession. Also, what if you're playing the Detroit Lions? You know 100% Dan Campbell would go for 2. Do you just ignore that and go with analytics?
But the real question is this: did Kyle even know the rules? Some of his players thought a TD won the game. Did he know that to be false? Or did he maybe know the rule but forgot in the moment and told Warner to take the ball if they win the toss out of confusion or instinct from past years?

I think Kyle didn't want to put the pressure on Purdy and instead rely on the defense. Not that Purdy couldn't answer with a touchdown in the next possession, but that still doesn't guarantee a win, and if he throws a pick, that could end his career. Remember, football players are people too, they need to get paid. Kyle took the fault like a true leader. The 49ers lost the game when they couldn't convert in the last possession during regulation.

I think Kyle’s “analytics” blurb is nonsensical to the point I wonder if they even did it or the analytics ppl actually gave him that recommendation.…..the pre game analytics would indicate you take it second - second team gets advantage and will use four downs since they know what they HAVE to do etc. the real word excuse of “my defense needed rest”, makes more sense and is a valid point

  • @dgoodman1484
    @dgoodman1484 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Talking about the players not knowing as if they somehow would have played different is nonsense! Having said that, I don’t actually think Shanahan knew because I want the ball second every time! It’s a huge advantage reaching the bar when you know where it is! It’s the same thing with track. You always take the inside so you can watch what the outside are doing. Having said all that, the reality is that it’s just one of a dozen reasons we lost. Greenlaws replacement gave up something like 6 for six and let Mahomie run free. McKivitz didn’t block anyone when it mattered and on and on and on. Only reason it was close was Mahomie choked most of the game
