Agreed. Likewise, going for a TD on 4th like some media members are spouting would have been flawed because should they fail, KC just needs to gain about 50 yards to get into range for Butker.
I don’t mind him taking the ball but i do mind him taking the ball and then kicking a field goal if they loose fighting they loose fighting but kicking a field goal when you have no momentum in the game and mahomes was hot can’t happen its like kicking against brady it makes no sense
@deehill6719 I see your point, it was a tough call because Spags and the D had our number on 3rd and manageable on the previous play and last play of regulation so can understand the FG. 3 points at least puts the D in position to get a TO or a KC mistake for the win.
The biggest blunder you missed is giving Mahomes 4 downs!!! The Niners would have been better off going for the TD on 4th down. If they failed, the Chiefs would have punted on next drive!!!! Duhhhhh
Kyle has his warts but hes still one of the best coaches in the league. If the 49ers really are internally bothered by his decision, fire him and find a better coach. I'm certain he gets another job in short order.
The game was lost at the 2min warning when it was 3rd an 5. Even 2nd and 5....team is running the ball, chiefs are gassing and instead of running the ball you try two basic pass plays. At that point in the game, you need that first down as if it's the game, because it is! A first equals a last second FG (or close enough) and thus Mahones has no time to get anymore points. SF's Defense did great for 3.5 Qtr, but at the point the game they are not stopping KC, few if any teams do. Andy reed has great plays when it comes down to must have and apparently Kyle doesn't.
If the analytics department told him to receive in overtime they should all be fired and replaced. He should have deferred. Period. End of story. Shanahan choked. Like he always does.
It’s simple if you kick there is no scenario where you can lose the game without gaining possession of the ball. As the receiving team there are scenarios where you can lose the game and you have to score.
Purdy had a good first half, second half he was only average. Mahomes was cautious for most of the game which was so smart to avoid intercepts. And then he pounced when it mattered at the end of reg and ot. Chiefs were an average team for most of the season, then won on the road in every game. Outstanding playoffs performance.
@@iancocks9408 exactly on Mahones, but my comment on Purdy was he had great opportunities to put TD's that ended up in field goals. he played good but you got to play great to beat Chiefs
I can’t believe I’m going to defend Purdy but the 49ers should’ve won the game. They had a 2nd and goal to win the game and Kyle decides not to run the ball. There’s a whole meme about the Seahawks not running the ball in the Super Bowl. They get the first down, they are running the clock out to set up the game winning field goal
The thing no one is talking about is that these deep runs into the post season take a toll on players, especially if they're not even winning, and getting back to the SB is harder and harder. The window is closing on SF.
Why should the HC have to explain the rules? Fans (a good many if not most) know them. That said, he should've kicked off. But at the end of the day it's SF Defs job to stop them, Mahomes or no Mahomes.
I don't get the analytics angle for this bc it's the only time it happened in the NFL.... but if you just look at college football, everyone says take the ball 2nd. Like it's not even a question. It is a little different bc college doesn't have that sudden death part where Shanahan was planing for the 3rd possession but still, you have so much more control and options but going 2nd to avoid any 3rd possession situation. It's 100% the wrong call.
I am a firm believer there is a place for analytics. Especially in the regular season. The playoffs is definitely more about feel and knowing the flow of the game. That's when the head coaches decision making can't me handcuffed by someone who isn't taking everything into account including emotion on your sideline or the game flow.
Over time rule is not even 'new.' It's been in place for 3 years. Mahomes said they strategized on the scenario so much that he became sick and tired of hearing about it. Chiefs are dangerous enough with Mahomes, but they are very well coached.
Here's my issue. When he made the decision, the vast majority of people weren't sure what the choice should be. A week later, EVERYONE suddenly knows exactly what to do. Everyone is acting like they could outcoach shannahan as if they don't have the benefit of hindsight. And I'm still not 100% sure that giving the chiefs the ball is the right choice. I'm sure in Shannahans mind, with how tired the defense was, that would be basically immediately giving the Chiefs a touchdown. The result would be that the 49ers would essentially have to score a touchdown and a 2pt conversion to win. Otherwise, he has to hand the ball back to the chiefs, who can win with a field goal. He figured that letting his defense rest gave him the better chance at stopping KC. In hindsight, that's the wrong choice, especially knowing now that the Chiefs would have gone for two anyway. My point is that there's a lot of loud voices who are literally Monday morning quarterbacking a decision that had never had to be made before.
Why do they say they didn't know that the overtime rules had changed. When at OT coin toss the referee stated the new rules to everybody on TV in the stands at the stadium I mean come on you didn't listen
Analytics would be based on a bunch of data across multiple games and multiple scenarios. The issue is Patrick Mahomes in that situation is like a 1 in 1,000,000. Similar to Brady. So when analytics are factoring in games played by bad QB’s you aren’t seeing the potential for greatness in a spreadsheet of numbers.
Thank you for this video assessment. I see people parroting this idea that under no circumstance should a coach choose to drive first in OT. There is more factors to consider obviously, the most important being if you want to put your offense under immediate pressure in OT
Kyle does not seem to take ownership in anything. If he would just came out and said I “messed up I didn’t know OT rules. My thinking is if we score first we win”. If he said that this would’ve been done after Monday.
KC said they would've gone for 2 if it were a tied game at the end of their OT possession. Also, what if you're playing the Detroit Lions? You know 100% Dan Campbell would go for 2. Do you just ignore that and go with analytics? But the real question is this: did Kyle even know the rules? Some of his players thought a TD won the game. Did he know that to be false? Or did he maybe know the rule but forgot in the moment and told Warner to take the ball if they win the toss out of confusion or instinct from past years?
I feel like Mahomes/KC are the champion fighter...almost seems like they refuse to attack and play their cards, and prefer to counter. They almost prefer to play from behind at times 😂 And probably not...but damn
He is a massive reason they lost. He takes the most responsibility. Wilks actually coached better than Shanahan. And I still think it was the right fire to fire Wilks.
I think Kyle didn't want to put the pressure on Purdy and instead rely on the defense. Not that Purdy couldn't answer with a touchdown in the next possession, but that still doesn't guarantee a win, and if he throws a pick, that could end his career. Remember, football players are people too, they need to get paid. Kyle took the fault like a true leader. The 49ers lost the game when they couldn't convert in the last possession during regulation.
how can analytics justify giving Mahomes an extra down to kill you? going for it every fourth literally increases the chiefs chance by 25% to win the Superbowl
I think Kyle’s “analytics” blurb is nonsensical to the point I wonder if they even did it or the analytics ppl actually gave him that recommendation.…..the pre game analytics would indicate you take it second - second team gets advantage and will use four downs since they know what they HAVE to do etc. the real word excuse of “my defense needed rest”, makes more sense and is a valid point
Talking about the players not knowing as if they somehow would have played different is nonsense! Having said that, I don’t actually think Shanahan knew because I want the ball second every time! It’s a huge advantage reaching the bar when you know where it is! It’s the same thing with track. You always take the inside so you can watch what the outside are doing. Having said all that, the reality is that it’s just one of a dozen reasons we lost. Greenlaws replacement gave up something like 6 for six and let Mahomie run free. McKivitz didn’t block anyone when it mattered and on and on and on. Only reason it was close was Mahomie choked most of the game
Kyle lost us the super bowl again!!! He makes poor decisions in every big moment. Daddy Mike S would say run a toss on the Chiefs 44 IN THE 3rd quarter!!! I hope we get Bill B…. And hire an offense Josh M.
Shanahan is the most overrated coach in the game. His blocking schemes kill him in every big game. Last years NFC Championship Game, he got Purdy killed. This year, he didn’t block Chris Jones on 3rd down. Dude sucks.
Kyle Shanahan is a freakin’ TRAIN WRECK as an NFL HEAD COACH!! The Head Coach is the “Leader of the Band”, the CEO of the team on the field. He has coaches who run the offense, defense and special teams. John Lynch needs a Head Coach who knows how to run the game. Not stuck in OC, DC, STC mode. Kyle is not his father.
Run a draw or sweep like you did against them the 1st time… out of pistol and not under the center runnnnnnn the balllll………….. FIRE KYLE FIRE KYLE FIRE KYLE!!!!
It's hilarious to hear them invent defenses for the terrible OT decision when they went on and on for weeks about that guy who coached last year's losing team for not going for it on something like 4th and 3 from their own 40. Great to see they're both on a first name basis with the coach, though, unlike literally every other NFL coach
The 49ers had a defense that showed the wear and tear at the end of the fourth quarter. Total agree with Shanahan’s decision. It backfired, but Mahomes would have scored a touchdown with the ball first as well. That’s life; deal with it.
Everyone is saying should have them the ball . No has said what the new over time is exactly , haven't heard one person break it down ! If they gave them the ball and score a TD and you don't you lose ! Or do you get a another chance ?
Hardman caught the winning touchdown pass and you can tell by his delayed reaction he didn't know the rules either. Its not until he sees Mahomes running towards him to hug him he realizes "oh shit" we just won the superbowl
@tylerholt6828 no because according to Shanahan they were already expecting the chiefs to score, expecting a third possession. So how would they be crushed if the chiefs scored if it was expected? Bottom line Shanahan is an idiot and you never give Mahomes the second possession lmao.
@tylerholt6828 no, no, no Tyler! Wth are you not getting?!. Kyle is a choke artist did you not hear the kelce's talk about this same situation on their podcast? 9ers were gassed chiefs were gased to. But they was prepared goddammit Tyler knock it off. Do not give Mahomes the second possession!!!! Play to win, run the ball twice since you took the ball first to do what??? WIN!

I say they're just scapegoating analytics to take any blame off Shanahan. I feel it's obvious... Shanahan just didn't bother to think things all the way through. That's why they lost. He just doesn't understand situational football and neither does his team.. how do you NOT know the overtime rules??!
I usually love Florios takes, but either he is getting paid to defend Shannahan or he's friends with him. This was a terrible decision in the moment and to blame analytics is beyond stupid.
With a coach you have to call it like quarterbacks, if they can’t get over the hump why is it on the quarterback in Lamar, Allen, and Dak case why not on the coach who can’t win. Purdy ran the plays he was told to.

Why is he one of the best coaches in the league? What has he really accomplished?
We playing against mahomes what are we talking about the 3rd possession and we playing mahomes he's going for the jugular DROP YO NUTS KYLE
You think his dad had analytics???? This is a joke!!! You gave Pat M. The Super Bowl! Forget you Kyle you should be FIRED!!!!
I love how they don't apologize to the fans. They can give 2 less shits about losing again
Chris loves his buddy Kyle
The game was lost at the 2min warning when it was 3rd an 5. Even 2nd and 5....team is running the ball, chiefs are gassing and instead of running the ball you try two basic pass plays. At that point in the game, you need that first down as if it's the game, because it is! A first equals a last second FG (or close enough) and thus Mahones has no time to get anymore points. SF's Defense did great for 3.5 Qtr, but at the point the game they are not stopping KC, few if any teams do. Andy reed has great plays when it comes down to must have and apparently Kyle doesn't.
I hate the reasoning for resting the defense. It didnt matter they rested and it didntbmatter they didn't stop them
True! Even with resting the defense during the 49rs offense taking time off the clock, the Chiefs scored a touchdown!
Do yourself a favor. Never play blackjack. Sometimes the right choice doesn't pay.
Niners should’ve went first. Plain and simple. Confusion over the rules is an embarrassment at this point.
It's sorry to see cbris at a lost for word. O defending Kyles decisions
Kyle Shanahan is %100 responsible and hanging it on Wilkes is effing racist... the D carried this game because Kyle is a trash playcaller. Period
People don't wanna talk about that part.
Apparently a successful two point conversion following a TD would end it
It would not both teams must have a possession in every scenario with the playoff overtime rules.
Talk about the holding calls on the chiefs that were never called..
more like Purdy coundnt get the ball to the WR's, his lack of arm strength showed in the SB and his throws were sailing.
"It felt like a field goal game"-I can't believe he said that
Belichik would have every player know what they were doing since the first playoff game. That is situational football, he is the best in that.
It takes more effort to make a statement then reality
The thing no one is talking about is that these deep runs into the post season take a toll on players, especially if they're not even winning, and getting back to the SB is harder and harder. The window is closing on SF.
Why should the HC have to explain the rules? Fans (a good many if not most) know them. That said, he should've kicked off. But at the end of the day it's SF Defs job to stop them, Mahomes or no Mahomes.
Lol that's the coaches job. To make sure his players understand ot rules just in case. You know , kind of like Reid did with his players.
Did the analytics department tell Kyle not to stress about telling McCloud to just fall on a live ball so not to risk a turnover?
I don't get the analytics angle for this bc it's the only time it happened in the NFL.... but if you just look at college football, everyone says take the ball 2nd. Like it's not even a question.
It is a little different bc college doesn't have that sudden death part where Shanahan was planing for the 3rd possession but still, you have so much more control and options but going 2nd to avoid any 3rd possession situation.
It's 100% the wrong call.
facts
Let’s ask Coach Staley about the value of analytics
I am always amazed that CS can put up with MT's enthusiasms. CS played NFL football. MT probably never threw a sportsball.
Todd Bowles and the Tampa Bay Bucs would never make this mistake.
The loss was not on the DC. If the 49ers fired him because of that loss, they fired the wrong guy.
Chris is always pulling his punches with Kyle. It’s too bad he can’t be unbiased about his friend.
Everyone’s a better coach after the fact than the one who was making calculated decisions in the battle.
Niners need to fire The Analytics Team
The head of the analytics department just fired and ultimately blamed the defensive coordinator.
Kyle lost us the super bowl again!!! He makes poor decisions in every big moment. Daddy Mike S would say run a toss on the Chiefs 44 IN THE 3rd quarter!!! I hope we get Bill B…. And hire an offense Josh M.
He talked with analytics guys, right. Just admit he didn’t know or forgot the rule changed.
Shanahan is the most overrated coach in the game. His blocking schemes kill him in every big game. Last years NFC Championship Game, he got Purdy killed. This year, he didn’t block Chris Jones on 3rd down. Dude sucks.
Everyone loves his dad so they give him a pass. Dude wouldn't even be in the league if not for his dad.
Chris is the biggest Kyle fan boy
Florio now reporting kyle shannahan may be retiring after the season
The 49ers had a defense that showed the wear and tear at the end of the fourth quarter. Total agree with Shanahan’s decision. It backfired, but Mahomes would have scored a touchdown with the ball first as well. That’s life; deal with it.
That maybe true but the niners would had the ball last to try win it that's the point
Florio must be hell to live with - constantly second-guessing everyone and believing everyone has nefarious motives.
They should have never given Mahomes the second possession. Unreal.
The rules CHANGED, both teams get the ball regardless.
@@verafiedairmanlike he said they should have never given Mahomes the second possession.
@tylerholt6828 guess what? They still died. Again never give Mahomes the second possession
WIN!
Whatever the defense should have stepped up and stopped them all that other talk is unnecessary
Kyle must be Chris's friend and that's okay. Everybody is open to criticism. The Kansas City Chiefs were ready for overtime 100% it's obvious they had a plan like ending the game. Before the coin 🪙 flip for OT if Kansas City got the 🏈 2nd they knew it wasn't going to be a 3rd possession. Kyle's 3rd time straight (not ready) 25,10,10 Leads and same SB results-Please 🛑 calling this man a genius 🎓
Ridiculous take. Kyle’s not thinking about his analytics team in that one brief moment.
How come the chiefs analytics say kick the ball off. I dont think Kyle is being truthful. He just didn't know
I say they're just scapegoating analytics to take any blame off Shanahan.
Can't second-guess Kyle, he went with his guts and made a decision that went wrong. Let all these second-guessers be coaches. Andy out coached Kyle
Chris you need ChapStick
AND Greenlaw was out. You expect your defense to win the game against Mahomes without arguably your best defender. You lose that battle 10/10 times.
The reasoning for kyles decision that these idiots are making is crazy.
