"Say Old Man, Can You Play Fiddle?" - Jesse Maw - Camp Sumner Sessions

  • Jesse showed up to this jam session with only his Tenor guitar in hand. After picking a ton of tunes with Katrina and on the verge of calling it a night, he succumbed to gentle peer pressure and retrieved his fiddle. This is Jesse's fourth and final video for this year's Camp Sumner Sessions.
Daniel Carwile kicked off this series with "Say Old Man, Can You Play Fiddle?" and Jesse ends his part of the series with the same. It is worth contrasting these individual variations to see how vastly different two fiddlers with very distinct playing personalities can approach the same tune.
Jesse lives in Kalispell, Montana. He can be reached through his Facebook page:

The more I listen to this fella the more I wonder why he hasn't won Weiser or Grand Masters. Some real genius in his interpretations. Seems like a real nice guy as well.

No argument from me, Rus. Some folks will find Jesse's style to be too progressive for their taste, but I find him to be eminently listenable. His performances in these videos (and elsewhere) are worth repeated viewings as there are always a lot of amazing things going on in his playing. And, yes, your are correct, Jesse is one the nicest, most down to earth individuals you would ever hope to meet.

He deserves national attention. He's out of this world.. Ask his friend Mark O'Connor. I'm just a so and so. 😁

He's actually one of the best musicians to ever play fiddle music. He's brilliant.
Not saying he's the best but I'll say he's brilliant. Some people don't get it but That's ok. He keeps progressing with his music. He's an anomaly. ❤🔥

People forget that what Terry was doing back in his time was considered way ahead of his time. This is amazing from a pure talent perspective. Nobody has ever played SOM like this. Totally unique and almost scary from a musician's point of view. Lol. 🔥😂

Very true, John. Terry Morris' legacy lives on in many of our young players today and I still marvel at what he was saying on his instrument and how he was saying it back in the 70's and 80's. His jam recordings literally changed my life, late in life, because they changed my way of thinking about fiddling and what it should be. I also marvel at Jesse, who, no doubt, did a lot of studying of and listening to Terry's music. No, nobody has played "Say Old Man" before like Jesse does in this video...including Jesse. And he'll never it just like this ever again...but you can be sure however he plays it...it will be remarkable.

Good grief is this arrangement even legal in most states? Difficulty is totally out of bounds. Jesse kudos and kudos again for this gem. 🤷‍♂️💙

Fun fact about this late night/early morning jam session, is that Jesse showed up at Camp Sumner with just his tenor guitar, fully intending to only back up others. After doing so, I made him go back to his camp to retrieve his fiddle. Glad that I did. As for the "legality" of Jesse's interpretations of these tunes, it's an amusing comment, but there's a little truth in that statement, as not everyone appreciates Jesse's style. A few folks will tell you he pushes the envelope too far. I understand the sentiment but I do not agree with it. Jesse pushes boundaries but never leaves the tune behind. Jesse is not a musical deconstructionist. Ask him and he'll tell you..."I just play how I feel".

Of course, John, your humor and intent was received loud and clear. But while you and I find the notion of questioning the "legality" of what Jesse does on a fiddle an amusing one, it is not all that far away from what a very small number of individuals have told me to my face...that some of the tunes that Jesse plays and/or the way he plays them in a contest should not be rewarded. That he goes too far. But I'm willing to wager those folks have thought a whole lot more about it than Jesse has as I don't think he thinks very much at all about how he does in a contest. As you said, he's on another level.
