- Here I am driving over the Francis Scott Key Bridge. This steel arch bridge crosses the Patapsco River and Baltimore Harbor. This video was filmed driving on Maryland I-695 eastbound in Baltimore, MD in a tractor trailer.
Fort Carroll can be seen in the middle of the water off in the distance. It is on an artificial island and is an abandoned hexagonal sea fort.
I hope you enjoy!
Recorded on 8/10/2020.
The TH-cam algorithm has a sick sense of humor.
R.I.P TO THE 6 Construction workers that died
Didn't one of them survive?
@@Spid4rsw3bz I think 2 were found in a submerged pick up and the other 4 are missing.

all of us
Literally everyone 😂

It's weird thinking about how that massive structure is now gone. Not damaged, not closed for repairs, just *gone*
took 3 seconds and gone.
Gone-diddily-gone.
Couldn’t imagine being on this thing as it fell into the water, poor people!
The police recieved a mayday call enough time before it fell, so nobody was on the bridge when it happened thankfully
@@WesternMDRailfanIncorrect. There was a construction team working on the bridge when it fell. All 6 workers died

Can't believe the entire bridge is gone😢
I know 😭
Crazy. I was not expecting that one this morning.
It's gonna be hard to get over it.
I can't believe it's not butter!
Thank god too!
May we appreciate our lives and the life saving heroism of those construction workers that cleared the bridge. True appreciation as there is no greater love than when someone sacrifices their life for another.😢
Amen ❤😥
@@TyrannosaurusSex we have that over here but it's diversity hiring. You will have 1 or 2 girls working road construction and the boys will be actually digging. Maybe the girls will hold the traffic sign up. Good money too.
Scary looking drive. Insanely narrow shoulders, low side railings.
I've driven on it many times and I've never liked it. It feels old and uncomfortable because of it's narrow lanes and it's a bumpy patchwork of ancient asphalt. I honestly don't know that it was ever repaved since it was built. But just like everyone is a saint after they die, all bridges are apparently considered beautiful after they're gone.
For me that's a good thing, the views are beautiful. I commuted over the bridge for 28 years, so I guess I'm used to it. Every day, seeing the weather changes, and many thunderstorms, one I remember had lightning striking the bridge supports high overhead. And so many ships going under as I was driving, It was never considered that we were in any sort of danger. I can't wait to drive over the new bridge.
@@llwpeaches I loved it, and the wonderful views, every day it's different.
That bridge should have had 'dolphins', around the tower bases to take the hit instead.
@@newtoncooper4085 There are dolphins there. They were just too small and too far away from the pylons. The ship missed them completely.
oh wow. Thats a big bridge.
That's a fairly normal size bridge by Maryland standards. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge, which is nearby, is much taller and 4 times as long. Then there's the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel which seems to never end when you're driving on it/through it. It's over 17 miles long!
@@llwpeaches Driven on the CBBT once - and man, there's a point where all you see is water, except for the road straight ahead going off to seemingly a single point in the distance. The trick for me was to make sure not to look *too* far ahead.
@@llwpeaches The two bridges are about the same height, the bay bridge is 1' higher. 186' to 185'. They service the same ships so I guess that's high enough. The Key bridge was the largest of it's type when it was built.
Was
It's wild. This bridge looked like a twig next to that enormous ship.
Fr bro… adds context to how large that ship was that was heavy enough to bring down an entire bridge
Based on Ft. Carroll, it looks like this drive is over the bridge in the NE direction. If so, the pier that was struck by the Dali is underneath at about the 1:10 mark in the video, just starting the SW portion of the main truss-suspended span cantilever. The location of the repair crew and trucks on the bridge that night was at about 1:18 (in the oncoming lane). Condolences to the families of those who were lost.
Sad it's gone! RIP! Glad it didn't happened during rush hour
They probably would have had the bridge blocked like it was blocked when it fell
@@oldthingsaregone59 True, but there woud have been more cars on the bridge when the boat hit it.
@@ochsj1971There was a semi Truck that just fell of the bridge in baitmore when it was like blocked and the could had a bus there
Thanks for posting this video! It adds a great perspective to the story.
the vid looks to of been posted years ago, looks like TH-cams algorithm is recommending this to everyone on here now after what happened

Thank you for sharing this!! I live in Maryland but have never been there.l 🙏 for all!!!❤❤❤❤
A four year-old video suddenly becomes relevant
I've been over that bridge many times. Seeing this video and knowing what happened is terrifying.
Finally someone who went in the right lane so i could see Fort Carroll again. This bridge made my daily commute enjoyable.
It's like watching footage from inside the WTC before they collapsed.
Imagine that whole thing toppling over as you drove on it though 😳
TH-cam knows what it’s doing, recommending this to me now
RIP to all
When you come here to see how going across that bridge would be this is so heartbreaking
Thank you for sharing and caring
Looking at this bridge gone from The Seagirt Marine Terminal is heart breaking. Its ashame and sad. I still find it hard to believe its gone
Sad but it looks like Baltimore needed a new bridge anyway….
Rubber band jack hammer bridge, no thank you. literally is made of giant rubber bands lmao naw fam good ridance
That bridge looks similar to the sunshine skyway that got hit in the tampa st Pete area in 1980 by a ship. All I know is this new bridge they will build will be higher and have bumpers just so a ship can’t get near the bridge to knock it down
My thoughts exactly
I don't think building a taller bridge is going to be the engineers main concern when designing the new bridge. Structural support will be the main issue, that ship hit one support and the entire structure collapsed on both ends.
@@landonsewell81 I agree a lot of revelations since this incident first happened
The new bridge will probably be a suspension bridge. Maybe a little taller. But not much more than the old bridge. The channel will be dredged deeper to accommodate larger ships in the future. Just my guess. But only time will tell.
Wow long bridge
You almost wouldn't think that a bridge like this one would actually collapse. But here we are today...
ANY bridge would collapse after taking a direct hit like this one took. People underestimate how heavy those ships are....
Wow very eerie.
Wow never knew that bridge flexed that much!! That's pushing fifteen inches I bet.
Yes. If your stuck at the top in traffic (only if there's an accident) it's bouncy. I believe the roadbed is made that way to relieve stresses.
Who knew this bridge would be gonr
I hope the bridge isn't rebuilt exactly as it was before. Feel like it needs to be 6 lanes with one on each side being reserved for HOV's, plus a pedestrian and bike path.
Plus from the pedestrian path, there should be a memorial on the bridge for the construction workers who died. Perhaps a marker at each of the 6 points they were standing at when it fell.
Bicycles and pedestrians are prohibited on Interstate highways.
@@markmartindale7215 That's why you build footpaths and bike lanes separated from the road.
There are plenty of bridges out there that do this. Having a bridge that can be used for cars and only cars was a really dumb idea.
would someone want to walk or bike about 1.5 miles long?
@@thesilverblack708 I'm aware of the Shared Streets concept. It is being implemented more and more in Baltimore. Interstate routes are not good candidates for shared streets. If you are familiar with the area where the Key Bridge was you would know that is is not a place where anyone would ride a bike or walk. There are no bike or walking paths anywhere near the Key Bridge that would connect to your pathway in the sky.
@@JoshGaming_roblox-yg4oe You'd be surprised. More likely they'd bike across, especially now with eBikes on the scene allowing cyclists to travel very long distance.
It was a fun bridge to drive over.
Given what happened, it is especially interesting to see this. Peace to the workers who died in the tragedy.
When they build a new bridge, it should have some sort of shoulder.. maybe another lane..
From what I can see, this video had not one comment until the bridge collapsed.
As with most things, we take it for granted.
really puts things into perspective, such a massive structure to just, go like that...the views of the bridge from the side that have the whole bridge must be miles and miles away
Excellent video -- puts things into focus
I would hate that bridge. Bouncing would scare the shit out of me, good riddance to the bridge but not to the victims, r.i.p homies.
RIP Francis Scott Key Bridge... and that maintenance crew
Looks like a sturdy bridge
I know my dad would travel over the bridge frequently when he was working during my childhood. I was in Catholic grade school in 6th grade when she was built. 4ever in our hearts and minds. RIP! ❤😢
50 years from now our grandchildren may watch this video to read our thoughts about this bridge collapsing. I’ve never wanted to vomit after seeing something tragic until the day this bridge came down and the anxiety I suffered for days putting myself in the workers shoes. 😢
That bridge look like it was gonna collapse ether way
Yes I agree! To be honest, as they drive over the middle section it sounded to me like its bouncy/rickety for some reason. Not sure if it was suspended? Wiki didnt really say but it looks like a small section in the middle may have had suspension cables?
But anyway, those were my thoughts! 😢
Classic example of the ship kicking the door and the entire shack collapses.
That’s one heck of a long bridge !
It's hard to watch this and not tear up.
It’s wonderful that you shared this video. Thank you. God bless the lost lives, their families and the first responders.
Thanks. Rode my harley from Detroit to Dundalk this weekend. Trying to find footage of the bridge that does justice. This was perfect!
I hope you are okay sir very sad what happened
@@Flea-jr8fshe’s fine his comment is from three years ago lol
Wooow never knew it was that long to be reduced to nothing 🙏🌹✝️🌹🙏 for a speedy rebuild
Nice bridge
After the bridge collapsed, I didn’t have a sense of how big it was until I saw a little tugboat in the water, it just looks so tiny next to the collapse bridge and the shipping vessel with the containers
Look how the truck is bouncing on the suspended section...
This is the direction going towards Sparrows Point and Dundalk. I miss those drives over the bridge, and the beautiful view of the city. Things can change in an instant. So sad
Gone in just a few seconds. Crazy
I wonder if the uploader is wondering why this video has suddenly gone viral? Nah, they'l figure it out.
It’s hard to fathom all the concrete and steel that will need to be cleaned up after the collapse, but this certainly puts it into perspective
Unbelievable it's gone thanks video interesting I been learning alot last few days about bridge. dolphins that beneath bridge water to protect pillows they were far to small for size that ship. Thinks change since 1970s when that bridge built. am no expert woo what big ship.
RIP😢
Wow. I can't believe they rebuilt it already. That was fast.
Still hard to believe the entire bridge is gone.
Sad to know all of that is underwater now. Things change so quickly.
Waw, this bridge is really gone.
😢 unbelievable
Thank you for posting. Seems the road surface isn't in all that great condition, as most Baltimore roads.
It was like a roller coaster in a car but even worse in a tractor trailer, but that was the road surface on the span not the super structure, the bridge was solid otherwise
I wonder how far the cones go back on either side.
I've driven over this bridge hundreds of times since 2002,even when ships were passing under at night, and then in an election year this happens, somehow it doesn't seem like an accidental occurance
Just one hit and destroyed entire bridge. Engineers should think about this when they plan.
They will have to rethink now their safety when these big ships going under these bridges with workman on them the length of the bridge I think over one half miles they would had to given plenty time to get off bridge Walkie talkies the whole safety side will have to be looked at and risk assessment to be looked at perhaps none ships allowed to go out night under bridge as workers on it safely again in the risk assessment. Roads shut when workers on them at times. Just thought.
Not easy to survive 130,000 tons moving 10 knots hitting, basically perfectly orthogonal to the span, a deep-water mid-span pier . I'm dubious any existing bridge in the US could do it.
It’s gone now
Corporations need to be held accountable when they destroy society.
Well they better watch that other bridge too. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Before that one fall too
Imagine listening to the song rubberband man while driving over this
Before the bridge fell this video had 2 views.
Make this bridge live forever.
Nothing lives or lasts forever.
lmao
Knowing that I’ll never go through this bridge the same as I did before:(
That bridge is very big.
Should have been named the 'house of cards' bridge
Basically nothing can survive 200 million+ pounds hitting it. Sure, it probably should have had dolphins to stop the boat, but with so much mass heading towards it there really isn't anything that's going to take such a massive hit.
Years ago went over that bridge....no room for error. Is it me or is the jersey barrier on the right too low..... not enough to stop a vehicle from going over the edge into the bay in an accident???
Two comments in three years, 208 comments in eleven days. Man is forgetful when happy, but aroused from his slumber in tragedy.
@02:32
used to be Toll Booths right there. They got rid of them after covid.
Would love to see the view stats on this video...
Exactly why driving on bridges gives me anxiety
Dear god ❤
I hope that when this bridge is rebuilt that they put a structure up that is more sturdy. Something that won't collapse so easily.
They should’ve put more support on the beams that held the bridge in place
Why? It seemed to hold up well as it was designed.
The poor bridge. I never liked how high it felt up there. Now it’s gone 😢
Prayers for everyone 🙏
Oh it was more than a feeling; it was 185 feet off the surface of the water!
Uh no!! That bridge was so torn up in 2020! I would not go on it! That condition needed to be reported... no wondering nearly the whole thing fell down. They need to prioritize finding those men and bringing them out and to their families.
I didn’t realize this was sped up. I thought everybody was doing 100.
That’s a lot of bridge to go down in a matter of seconds…
This is fine.
How long is the bridge from land to land?
Always got a weird feeling on this bridge.
That bridge will build 2025
where's the high voltage power line?
Way below. There are electrical conduits under the roadbed though.
The real question is, why did it collapse like a deck of cards?
TH-camr algorithm is sick
Man, you just don't see views like this anymore ...
google maps, ever optimistic, lists the bridge as temporarily closed
Bouncy truck.
Bouncy bridge.
Having this view of the so called barrier protection while going over this bridge from a tractor trailers view is even more heart wrenching than the view as if in a regular automobile looking.
I have never understood why from the beginning that higher thicker barriers are not common place on all bridges such as this one.
From this cab view the tiny barriers look no bigger than pop cycle sticks cemented together.
Yes,I know it's a money and life thing.
Not enough people go off the side of bridges and die to make it mandatory on bridges to have such safety, unless however, one of there loved ones (government power officials) hit the pop cycle barrier and it didn't stop there vehicle and let'em mozzy right on down for an eternal swim.
ssh,government,smh.
R.I.P. to those who died in the bridge collapse and safe journeys for everyone.
Gives thanks to Jesus every day.
Thanks for the upload.👍
