it's typically not the mechanic it's the shop he works for. Electrical problems don't pay well so it's a fix the fucking issue and get it out the door. There's typically very little money in parts so we're forced to kick them out the door as soon as we kind of figure out the issue.

Had a first gen neon that would intermittently pop the fuel pump fuse. Checked the pump, checked the wiring, checked the O2 sensor that shared the circuit with the pump, nothing. Finally it hard faulted, once it did that I could see a short to ground on the circuit, started unplugging things until all I had left was wiring and finally was able to find it. The car had been in one of the many Houston floods and at some point the rear seat was removed (presumably to remove the carpets and jute) and during reinstall the harness that runs under the seat was displaced and was chaffing on the bottom of the seat. After I found it, we realized the common factor to when the fuse would pop, was somebody in the back seat. Give me a hard fault any day over an intermittent one!

Electrical issues can be so aggravating, because you can't easily see the problem like with mechanical issues or leaking fluids. Whether I'm working on my house or figuring out a vehicle issue, electrical problems require more logic and thinking. That's a handy little relay switch tool there. I'll have to check that out. Thanks.

My scariest failure is a tie between the following:
    1. Losing everything electronic in my E36 as I was getting off the freeway. Alternator died and the motor was still running somehow, but absolutely no electronics-no turn signals, no tach or speedo, no flashers, nothing. Easy fix, but that moment of looking down and knowing I had no brake lights was scary.
    2. Audi A3 that wouldn't regen the DPF to clean it out and went into limp mode. Wouldn't go more than 30 in a 55 backroad up a hill with no shoulder and a line of cars behind me. That was fun. Thankfully got it to regen just fine. But man those cars are finicky.

Wizard, I have a 2007 Mercedes SLK 55 AMG. When the weather and car is hot 85degrees. Car temp a little over mid range If I stop the car and restart it with the drivers door open. The fan will run on a very high speed. The fan will actually drain a fully charged battery. Tons of warning lights. Srs,abs seatbelt warning extra etc. navigation turns off if on.but if I start the car with the driver side door closed np problem with the fan runs at normal speed no warnings at all. What I do now is to made sure the driver side door is closed before I start the engine. I don’t know if the passenger side door does the same. I checked google and various Benz forums some drivers describe the same problem but no causes have been found. It’s something with the driver side door being open while starting the engine.

Scariest "car malfunction"??? Had a 1999 Camaro Z28, t-top. Drove to some weird ass llama farm(special event venue) about 25 miles away on twisty back roads from where I lived for work back in college. Nice spring day, drove with the t-tops off, got there, started talking to somebody while putting the t-tops on, apparently distracted did not lock down the driver's side t-top. Drove 25 miles home at 12:00am, decided to give her hell on a really straight road about 2 miles from my house. 80-90mph the driver's side t-top just flies off, no warning, no whistling sound on the drive home, thought it was latched in. Scared the shit out of me.
Woke up early the next day found it wedged against a fence in the ditch, completely intact somehow, hardly a scratch on it lol.

I pulled over and a Sherriff saw me and stopped to check on me. He helped me find the problem. We pulled back the carpet and saw the jute burned black. "Now what am I going to do?" He said there's old. sign there in the ditch, put that under the carpet. that worked just fine. Smoke means fire and inside a car is bad. A guardian angel was with me that day for sure.

Scariest: Mini Moke left hand side driveshaft spline shearing off at 80kph. Left hand wheel went spinning off into the bush as the car hit the deck and scraped along the road. Fortunately, we here in Australia drive on the correct side of the road so I didn't end up in oncoming traffic. The bugger of it was that it sheared off on the wheel side of the CV joint. Nothing short of x-raying the damn thing would have indicated it was going to do this. No injuries. Not even underwear. Look up a Mini Moke and see why I nearly died :-)

This is the reason to not buy any Ford Mustang, unless you know what you are doing to that vehicle. Always look for a vehicle that you need on a daily basis. For example, an older Mazda 3 hatchback will be a lot better to own and to maintain well than a Ford Mustang. A 2007 Mazda 3 GT hatchback is an excellent compact vehicle, because it has the 2.3 L four-cylinder engine with 156 horsepower and you can get one with a five-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift mode or a regular five-speed manual transmission. They are very reliable and they go for a number of miles or a number of kilometres on the odometer. These Mazda 3's are well known to be Honda Civic's or Toyota Corolla's. I just found one at a used car dealership near my residence with only 155K kilometres on the odometer and it is only priced around $6K. It is a 2007 Mazda 3 GT hatchback model with grey exterior colour. Thank you very much and have a great Monday.

Another problem from factory is still there, and that is the fact that the water pump is not doing a job worthy of wearing the label as a pump. A water pump is by right supposed to pump water and yet when tested they fail. What is actually circulating the coolant around the engine is thermosyphon and the load is on the radiator and the fan to keep a happy medium. We have done approximately 30.000 dyno hours to prove that when a water pump is brought up to the spec laid out by Otto the engine can be tuned. A proper water pump when installed on a good engine will not only allow for a proper tune but it will never overheat to the point of blowing a head gasket. A good pump must be able to push a fluid up hill or it does not earn the right to be a pump. A good test is to take both heater hoses off running them into a bucket with coolant in it, then start and bleed the engine and then remove the flow hose from the bucket and run it into a 1 litre container with the engine idling at 500rpm. The container should fill up in less than 10 seconds and the coolant should be free of bubbles. If it takes any longer to fill, then forget about attempting to tune the engine.

However, when I drove it and then stopped and idled it, the fan would not work then. It would not come on then even with the AC turned on and it’s supposed to come on whenever the AC is turned on. I was baffled and so were other people. No codes, nothing! I was about to buy a new computer when I decided to take apart the engine fuse box. There are 3-4 bolts you loosen and then you can lift up the relay holding section. Once I did that I saw that the wire that runs into the high speed fan relay was burned and the plastic connector was burned!! I had to get a new fuse box. I came across other Mustangs 05-09 with the exact same problem. I don’t know what caused that to happen but it was very frustrating. I was researching this issue for hours and hours. Each time it overheated while trying to solve this I would always shut it down right away. It don’t seem like I damaged anything as the car runs and sounds perfect. And these cars actually are designed so that if it was to run completely out of coolant it would go into limp mode. Nonetheless I don’t like the fact that it did get hot a few times. One of the most frustrating car issues I ever encountered! My dad in his mid 60s said he had a lot of vehicles and never had one where he had to change the engine fuse box. Electrical problems can be a nightmare.

@@robertswift6101 got a salvage wire harness with the connectors on it that connect into the engine bay fuse box. Got the salvage fuse box too. Cut the connector I needed off this salvage harness and unpinned each wire in it. Then with my burned connector still attached to the car I removed each individual wire from it and re-pinned it to the new connector. I did it wire by wire to keep track of where each wire went. At the end I had all wires removed from the old one and re-pinned into the salvage connector. Doing it this way kept the wiring all original except the one wire to the fan relay that had burned (causing the issue) and had to be spliced in with the same wire cut from the salvage harness. I then installed the salvage box connecting all of the wire harness connectors into the bottom of it. There are 3-4 connectors but I only had one of them burn so that’s the only one that had to be re-pinned with a new connector. The only thing changed on the wiring was that one burned wire spliced in. All other wiring stayed the same and the plastic connector was changed by re-pinning wires to the salvage one as some of the old connector had melted.

The bushings in the fan motor are worn down so the gap is getting further for the voltage to travel. More resistance means more current.

    • @miketeeveedub5779
      @miketeeveedub5779 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Worn bushings have nothing to do with voltage. Worn bushings cause noise or vibration. That's it. The issue comes down to two possible issues:
      1. The electric motor's brushes are either leaving carbon deposits on the rotor commutator and actually lowering electrical resistance.
      2. The copper winding in either the electric motor's stator or rotor are shorting out, again lowering resistance or increasing the induction voltage.
Ohms Law states Voltage divided by resistance equals amperage. You reduce resistance and the amperage increases - that's whats killing the relay. The fan is absolutely bad and needs to be changed.

Paused at the 2:46 mark I’m an intermediate to “advanced” diyer, not a professional.
Honestly with the information given not enough information given to come to a conclusion on what’s wrong. All we know is that it’s overheating and spewing coolant.
I always take these steps when this happened to me and my friends.
    1. Visual inspection to make sure, all hoses, and accessory/water pump belt don’t have any obvious signs of damage. Maybe I get lucky and the water pump is visible without removing timing belt cover or oil pump cover. (I believe this is the case on a Mustang 4.6). I also do a visual inspection of the oil in the dipstick to rule any obvious signs of failure.
    2. If everything on step 1 checks out, I top off coolant and pressurize test the coolant system and radiator cap.
    3. This step depends on what happened when I pressurized the coolant system.
A: If the system held pressure, and there are no leaks, I test/replace the thermostat. Then properly refill and bleed the coolant system to make sure there isn’t any trapped air in the system. This is the time to make sure my clutch fan/electric fan kicks on, as I am burping the engine, and reaches operating temp.
B: If I find a leak anywhere on the system I correct that issue...
C: If. coolant does not hold pressure, but there are no obvious leaks. I compression test or do a leak down on the engine. Depending on tools available to me.
D: If all numbers are good. I’d rent a coolant exhaust leak tester at that point....
E: I never gotten this far without diagnosing an overheating issue, but if issue is still not resolved by then, I’d look into a clog in the system such a clogged radiator etc etc.
Point is I try to pinpoint the issue before I just start replacing parts.
    Now I’ll hit resume:

My 1996 F-250, when the serpentine belt slipped off. I pulled into a parking lot to reinstall it on the pulleys (it had been slipping off the A/C delete pully). After getting it reinstalled I pulled out of the parking on the main road. I must have not shut the hood completley and it blew open and hyper extended the hood hinges. I had to unbolt the hinges in the middle of the road in traffic. Embarrassing and a bit dangerous too (plus it is a very heavy hood).

Same problem with the HVAC blower on the 2001-2007 Chrysler minivans with the automatic climate control. The blower motor gets old and burns out the transistor that regulates the fan speed. You MUST replace the blower motor AND the "blower control module" otherwise you'll just have another blown transistor on the blower control module.

one time my car was overheating while sitting idle in traffic but once it started moving the temp would fall back to normal again. It was at night and I was far away from any mechanic. It got to a point where it would overheat within minutes of driving. Upon opening the hood the problem was clear: There was a tiny hole on the radiator spewing coolant very slowly. Ran to a nearby store got a couple of eggs, used the egg white method, topped it up with water and it never overheated again until I got the car to a mechanic.

My scariest car malfunction was a master cylinder failure on my f250. It was going out and I was an idiot for not replacing it sooner, I would just do 2-3 pumps of the pedal and it would stop just fine. Well one day I’m backing up to unload junk and there’s a guy behind my truck I hit the brakes and to the floor, I hit it again to the floor, thankfully I was going slow, I slammed it in 1st gear and got it in and let the clutch out to stop the truck. That guy was 10 ft away from getting squashed. Scared the hell out of me, he didn’t realize I had lost my brakes so it didn’t bother him. I once drove my Jeep Cherokee home 5 miles with no brakes, no emergency brake. It sounds much more terrifying than my f250 experience but driving it home 2mph in 2nd gear low range 4x4 idling took an extra 20 minutes but was like a road trip on cruise control. I even went down a mountain grade in 1st low range 7% 1 1/2 mile. I thought for sure I’d have to shut the engine off, it maintained 2 mph downhill idling no brakes, I figured worst case I’d turn it off and if it continued to gain speed I’d turn it into the woods and jump out.
