JJ was the comedian of the kids. He brought the laughs and enjoyment but still knew when to get serious. Thelma was the voice of reason and level headed one who brought her brothers down to reality. Michael was the activist.
That's right. He was a good actor and could play comedy and drama
My favorite was Love in the Ghettto were JJ stood up for Thelma.
This was such a great show was the emotions and laughter.
After James (John Amos) was written out of the show, Michael lost his Pro-Blk mentality 🤔 What a coincidence!
The white kids of the mid-seventies were becoming white teenagers by the late seventies and they weren't interested in hearing that Pro black junk and it would have just alienated a big part of the viewership.. the biggest freak Show of the late 70s was Different Strokes

Of course the common denominator in all of the different scenes, was the Evans kids. Another common denominator in almost all of the different scenes was JJ's Blue DENIM Hat. The yrs. changed, but the Hat didn't.The Brotha even slept 🛌🏿 with the Hat on...Damn! 😆

Jimmie Walker said that the cast weren't really close but boy you'd never know it. The chemistry between the family felt so real and so enjoyable to watch. And that goes for Willona too.

Pretty dumb how the Evans kids had time to date numerous people to be able to make numerous references to having multiple. Given their situation is that realistic? Regardless of their financial situation underage dating probably ain't wise. Their parents seemed way too lenient with them. JJ with numerous references of different girls and names. Thelma with references of "my boyfriends".
Like they got it like that? Multiple? At once? They arguably shouldn't be dating at all, kids should be focused on their school work and being kids. Multiple? Come on. If you gon let your kids date then let it be in moderation or something.
And if living in utter poverty don't make it clear you oughta be focused on your education then what will?

They were teenagers not children. Teenagers should date. Humans have to develop social skills sometime. You can’t send them off at 18 with no knowledge of how to decipher romantic feelings or handle rejection. That’s a recipe for disaster. Also this is a comedy.

You know JJ doesn’t take any of the girls seriously so you wait to see the hilarity that will come about from his comeuppance. Unfortunately, the show didn’t do much of that, instead just having JJ mention a new girl. It would have been great character development for JJ especially in preparation for making him the man of the house when John left. But your point is valid I won’t deny that. I’m just saying not allowing teenagers to date at all is a terrible idea.
At the time it was nice to see a show about young people who weren't all uptight about everything .the worst show the late 70s was the white shadow about some creepy uncool Caucasian teacher who supposed to be something to idolize.. even Hollywood makes shows that always idolized government teachers
@@MrWolfchamp-xi3cu the way i took it was that it was just casual, rather than multiple serious relationships at once. i’ll admit, this show predates my birth by roughly 25 years, but wasn’t the idea back then for teenagers to not settle down as adults do? wasn’t it also commonplace that parents had to approve of a partner upon engagement?
They had some interesting young female characters on this show such as Edna and Savannah Jones that should have been the center of attention on many episodes instead of the idiocy of JJ who really was just a precursor to a goon like Adam Sandler acting stupid and obnoxious and shallow
