    The only thing I really like about this movie was me seeing it as a child in theaters on opening night with a friend, then us going back to his house for a sleepover, and then as soon as we tried to go to sleep, a huge lightning storm began outside and both of us were convinced aliens were dropping down to earth because we "found out about them" via the movie lol

      A similar thing happened to me and my cousin when we were younger. It was during a whole summer family gathering where we stayed in different log cabins right by a river. It was broad daylight outside and it was just the two of us hanging out in the log cabin. We decided to watch some tv and happened to turn it on right as it was in the middle of one of those ghost shows where they have people tell their stories while actors recreate it. And right as scary shit began to happen, the power in the cabin went out...it freaked me tf out bc I was going, ‟how did the power go out when there's not a raincloud in sight?‟, it didn't help that we were just watching a ghost show too. While I do believe in ghosts, as an older person I'm now thinking that someone was probably just messing with the power grid or something, the timing was still freaky

I see it as a contrast to Independence Day, where in that movie you see destruction around the world, with the U.S. government and some unlikely heroes saving the day. What makes War of the Worlds (2005) different is that it focuses on one small family trying to survive in the middle of the chaos.

    As a huge fan of this movie and someone who’s seen it well over 20 times, here are some sins you missed: The camcorder still working somehow after the lightning storm knocked out the power to everything. The news crew somehow filming the lightning storm despite the lightning being what knocked out the power in the first place. The basement scene at Robbie and Rachel’s moms house- when they hurry to that smaller room as the plane crashes, the door closes with the hinges on the right side from inside the room, but when Ray opens it in the morning, the hinges are on the opposite side somehow. The fact that the lightning hit so close to their house that you could see where from their back yard, and the tripod rises over 100 feet in the air but somehow nobody around Rays house including his kids notice it. During the continuous driving scene on the highway, Ray is turning the steering wheel in directions that the van isn’t moving. There’s a part in the ferry scene when the camera follows Robbie as he’s running onto the ferry, where for a second we see an extra actor on the right side almost run in front of the camera but stops herself and backs up, followed by other extras smiling and laughing. If the aliens buried the tripods here before humans were around, why didn’t they get sick back then? I’m sure there are more but I’m tired and wanna go to bed.

    Some people say this movie sucks solely because of its ending, but this is how the book it’s based on ended. I personally love the ending because these aliens made all of these invasion plans, but none of them ever thought they’d get sick from a foreign pathogen on another world.

      The moral is hubris. I think Spielberg was using the aliens as a analogy for for why it was bad for America to invade Iraq without a clear strategy. Of course it turned out the goal of the Iraq war was never to win but just to enrich the military defense industry soo🤷‍♀️

    • @YourBeingParanoid
      @YourBeingParanoid 2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@Ten_Thousand_Locusts Yet both this and Signs are reflections of the society at the time and most people miss the point about both. Even in this adaptation, Robbie's radicalization as a young man after a militarily superior invading force takes over his land and kills everybody indiscriminately and without just cause is balanced against what he does after seeing his father covered in the dust remains of his people - at the time both a statement about hoe America felt after 9/11 and how the people of Iraq and Afghanistan felt following the illegal American invasion.
      The film (like most Hollywood PG-13 stuff) got a lot wrong - but this I feel reflects what was trying to be said - even if the way they did it and the gooey ending (plus the actor playing Robbie) was a bit shit.

What Ray should have done was beat his son into unconsciousness and drag him away. Robbie might hate him (even more) later for it, but at least he'd survive! Several sins were about the conflicting nature of the kidnapping tripods and the heat ray tripods. To clarify, the movie shows that the aliens need at least some humans to fertilize the red crop they bring in. Based on that we can infer that the heat rays are for crippling and injuring, and the others are for farming. Fun fact about EMP’s is they actually only work on things with power going in to them as what an EMP actually does is basically cause things to short themselves out by opening every switch at once. But if you had the battery disconnected on an old car for the EMP then it should actually be fine to drive after.
    Modern cars would have a harder time as they’re a lot more electrical controlled and have all sorts of internal batteries and stuff.

    That's so true about the not running away part. If I raised my hand over a bunch of ants on a table, the ants don't stop and stare at me and wonder what to do, they start panicking and running away as soon as they see me too close. If I see a fly and pull out a flyswatter that bro is gone, instantly hiding somewhere because they know what a fly swatter looks like from instinct. Insects with almost no wherewithal run away from impending doom, the people in this movie are dumber than ants and flies.

      Yes and no. It's precisely because we have more developed brains we act dumb in situations because of smarts. You are right. What humans do is kinda dumb cos the gut linked to the old original instinctive hardware IS going get the eff out of there. Now, you can say "they had a machine to plant the tripods", then why not just make that your weapon. If you say they shot them to earth as meteors why wait ages to invade when you're already lobbing missiles at earth? Pretty sure if the planet got hit by a global meteor shower that THEN released alien death machines we'd be screwed.
    Oh, and they planted death machines on earth BEFORE we evolved, or developed advanced weapons? Once again, why not just take over then (unless they were planning on "farming the humans", which they still could have done with any large land animals.
