    Thursday: animated sequel sins.
Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie's sins should we count next?

The flat spin scene wasn't done with an actual F14, it's a model shot. However, they did have legendary stunt pilot Art Scholl perform a flat spin for the shots of the spinning sky. Sadly he was killed after his plane wouldn't recover from the spin, hence why the movie is dedicated to him.

In training when you have a wingman, protocol is for the Wingman to come in behind and take the place of the lead plane, as they have the ability to properly line up. Iceman had lost his shot, and should have been beholden to Maverick’s calls to move out of position, instead he tried to re-engage, and the jet wash caused Mavericks engines to not have any oxygen for a few seconds, and they failed one before the other, which is what caused the flat spin. Ah.. somebody who uses common sense. Thanks for confirming or adding to own personal thoughts, it's really what I kept thinking watching this CSins vid as a fully grown adult where in ways, watching even these scenes, a lot of this is "new" it's been so long. Like 3 decades or more. Happens to everyone or seems to at 1 point or another, even with books where all you recall are small flashes if anything at all. To me it was only cool as a kid, planes! rebels in the "system" against authority getting away with it! Pfffffft.
Only clearly remember "Goose! Talk to me GOOSE!!!" and still use it very frequently talking to people; if they pause for no reason at all, maybe thinking for more than 1 second or are suddenly busy perhaps with something else even for a moment on their cell, it comes out naturally real loud and excited; just lightly playing with them since they always laugh back. Most people seem to know it - even young brother and sister still in school know it from me (they never watched it or wanted to) and from memes or jokes which is fantastic to keep alive and going strong imo. It means pay attention or hurry up in a joking yet serious way.
Even thought Charlie was played by a completely different actress until 20 mins ago; all this time had confused her with a different movie. It's been that long.
Haven't seen this movie since.. _too_ young a kid so a lot of those odd, uh.. yes odd "intimate"?? moments - if that's what you can call it - parts I didn't understand (and with Tarantinos modern take mentioned that I have no idea about or heard before now but but can sort of infer by what's been said here and from childhood memory that it _is_ or could be that way; even when a kid kid) since I couldn't understand who turns down being with an attractive woman he's been chasing to play volleyball with pretty boy dudes with shirts off that you could hang out with anytime including in the locker room naked, face to face close enough to kiss? LOL on this side I always found that a little gross, no offense to anyone swear on life.
But a date, especially first one, you don't want to mess up unless a true emergency so it's even _more_ weird looking back now as adult so is probably main reason why it didn't make sense even at that age with huge mixed signals as Cinema S. points out. At that time in life and even now, I'm against the things the movie glamorized, like treating women like pieces of sh67. Making commitments and never keeping them, etc. These characters were not good to take as role models for susceptible kids at the time as what happened to lots of people I knew.
Sorry so long but this movie when released was a big deal to SO many people (parents, little friends, everyone) and with new one out or coming out that I won't watch even for free, it brought many many memories back which is the only reason they made a part 2. It's nostalgia even I'm victim to; but won't pay for.. and I quit watching all prequels and sequels after The Thing prequel. That was too much. My imagination was superior and it was perverted by their cgi that is hard to forget since it was frustrating to ruin the images in my mind that had been there since 1984, just 2yrs before Top Gun and remembered everything from that film and still watch it every few months today it's _that_ good. I had parents who knew horror was my thing and helped encourage it so any movie at the time had been seen multiple times including Alien and more.
I don't want everything explained though. That's the problem with movies today that likely includes nuTop Gun Part II. Gotta wrap things up right? Wrong. You don't have to but they sure like to, for the money that rolls in like a tsunami from those who don't like the mystery of it all.
Like I want to know what happened to Goose's family. His kids, did they become fighter pilots, drugged out alcoholics, tax accountants, pool cleaners? Who doesn't want those answers after nearly 35-40yrs trying to forget this movie even existed??

I just rewatched this after many years in anticipating of finally seeing Top Gun Maverick tomorrow. While the flying action pretty good, I found myself kind of struck at the rather shallowness of the story. Easily the most likable character to me is Goose. Additionally, I find Iceman's attitude/body language not really matching his criticism of Maverick. Iceman doesn't like Maverick for being a reckless hotshot, which is perfectly fair, but the vibe I get from Iceman is also of a too cocky hotshot, rather than a no-nonsense professional.

I rewatched it recently after watching TG Maverick. I agree about Goose, I was surprised by how likeable the character was, specially compared to the others. It also struck me how Iceman is always mentioned as this great pilot and the #1 and all, but the one time we see him in action during the Top Gun school he is ineffective and virtually causes the accident that kills Goose. The movie should have been a fierce competition between him and Maverick, but we never get that.

9:57 - If you listen to the entire debriefing, Viper tells Maverick that Jester had lost visual on Maverick & Goose and called "No Joy" before dropping below the hard deck. That's not an uncommon practice in training scenarios with multiple aircraft as a way to protect pilot safety so two aircraft don't inadvertently collide because one pilot lost sight of another. Since Viper doesn't dispute Jester's claim, it's almost certain that he was either listening to the comm traffic during the hop, or he heard a recording of it between the end of the hop and the debriefing. What I always took away from this scene is the Jester knew Maverick was a better pilot, and he lied about losing visual just so he could drop below the hard deck and end the hop without officially losing to Maverick.
EDIT: I never understood the bit where Maverick "quits." He can't quit...he was ordered to attend Top Gun. By leaving Top Gun he was AWOL and should have been arrested and thrown in the brig.

I had an uncle (by marriage) go AWOL in the early '80s because he didn't want to go on his remote assignment to Alaska for about a year without his family. He decided he'd just take off. Hitched rides back to Indiana and came wandering down the driveway at my grandparents' house on Thanksgiving. The MPs showed up about an hour later looking for him. He was arrested and eventually slapped with a dishonorable discharge. Dude was a cook and had been in the Army for about 15 years. Lost his pension and had a hell of a time finding work for the rest of his life. And all of my dad's brothers (this uncle married one of my dad's sisters) called him AWOL for the rest of his life. So that's why I was always puzzled by Maverick going AWOL ave not being arrested.

Don't know how many pounds equals one-seventh of a tank, but in aviation, you typically want to be overhead your intended landing location with enough fuel to make it to an alternate airport (Not sure how that works with carriers) or at least, enough fuel to make more than one landing attempt. That fuel also serves to provide loiter time overhead in case there is something happening on the field that delays landing for a short time. Bingo fuel equals the amount needed to return home plus the pre-calculated amount left in the tank once wheels down. These numbers vary by theater, command, threat matrix, airframe, pilot judgement, etc. This is all calculated and put out at the pre-flight brief long before asses connect to seat cushions.
TLDR: You don't ever run an airplane down to "empty."

A bit about the F14 fuel gauge... it shows ~2200lbs of fuel.
The F14, with two drop tanks, has about 21000lbs of fuel on board. F14 fuel gauges were notoriously inaccurate and to make things worse, between 300 and 500lbs of gas is trapped in the tanks due to the fuel pickup design.
So 2200lbs is actually closer to 1900lbs of gas being optimistic. The TF30 engines on the F14A consume, at thrust set for max range, about 2700lbs of gas per hour EACH at 33k feet. This rises to about 5500-6000lbs per hour (EACH) at a few thousand feet of altitude.
A normal Case I recovery of an F14A will consume about 3000lbs of gas in the stack and pattern depending on where they are in cyclic ops... a straight into the commence maybe half that. IRL, both jets are well below the safe fuel required to land on the boat and would have been forced to the recovery tanker before attempting a landing. Usually about 3000lbs is considered safe and gives you an attempt or two before having to hit the tanker for more gas.

Almost like... they train for that hundreds of times so it's muscle memory, and there's some small leeway in case problems arise, and even if he's distracted he's a professional (one of the top in the Navy even), and incidents during landing are pretty rare for good reason...

      @rcslyman8929 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It isn't that he's just shaken up. His aircraft was pitching and yawing to such a degree that it's a statistical improbability his tailhook could have actually caught the wire. And even if it did catch the wire (which, yes, it did), there's no way he wasn't smacking a wing on the deck.
(For those unaware, carrier decks are obviously incredibly short landing strips. When carrier-based aircraft land, they have what are called tailhooks... literally a hook at the tail of the aircraft. These hooks catch arresting wires, four of which are strung across the beginning of the landing strip. If you fail to catch the wire, the pilot has to do a missed approach and try to get the jet back up in the air, or they're likely going over the side unless they are already at such low speed that they can stop the aircraft without the assistance. At least, that's my limited knowledge on it, any NAS pilots or deck crew reading this feel free to correct me if I'm wildly off base.)

But... if you grab the #1 wire, you stop with you nose looking over the edge into the drink, so you're either a shitty pilot, a lucky pilot, or a psychopath who did it on purpose.

Sin on you Jeremy. We don’t say ‘hours’ after 1600 in the Navy. We simply say “Pass another beer.”

If this movie still bugs you, watch Hot Shots, the shell of a jet crashing onto the deck of the aircraft carrier is pure comedy gold.

@@Stackali The planes existence wasn't classified but there were absolutely classified components in that cockpit. Probably still are even 15 years after its out of service and never will be until 100 years after the USA is sure Iran's F-14s (seized in the revolution) are rust and dust. Just to keep them and the Russians a little unsure what may be missing.
Classified info is all about mind games like that.
Also a big ass camera would be a safety hazard and there's gonna be precious few places to even put it.

Yeah I chuckled at that. I knew a guy that built a replica Tomcat cockpit around his computer to play his flight simulator games. Can't have been all THAT classified.

There’s been plenty published of the cockpit layouts and instruments in the F-14 (and just about every other contemporary fighter in service), so it’s not much of a secret. The issue the US has with Iran and its Tomcat fleet is fears that parts taken from retired US F-14s could somehow end up in Iranian hands to keep their fleet airworthy.
As for no cameras in the cockpit, former F-14 RIO Dave “Bio” Baranek would disagree, with several books he’s published with loads of photos he took over the course of his career in the backseat of an F-14. He’s mentioned the only time he was told not to take any photos was when he went up against captured MiGs as part of the Constant Peg program at Tonopah Test Range, which made sense since that program was highly classified at the time, and he left his camera on the ground for those hops.

@@Stackali Right, the cockpits themselves wouldn't be classified because they're all pretty standard. What is classified is a plane's exact capabilities, which of course isn't something you would likely see in a photo.
