Hardcore Nuzlocke Ruleset:
4. No items in battle (held items okay)
5. No leveling past the next gym leader (at the START of the battle)
6. Play on "Set" battle mode

Personally, if two or three mons go down every gym, a romhack is balanced just right for a nuzlocke. Keeps dramatic tension and team diversity high. I mean, sorry for your loss.
