There's a tragic irony that I'm here currently procrastinating half way through a writing session BUT IN MY DEFENSE this video has made me want to write 10 times more
That bit about keeping an idea as your own little secret hit hard. I need to work with my internal motivation system, and not seek external praise or whatever
It's so hard right? Like, it seems so innocent to share even small ideas, but it can seriously kill motivation. I think society places a lot of pressure on people to look like we have "direction" or something, like we are always doing something. Unfortunately that kinda thing can convince us to try and make us say "hey, look at this great thing im doing". Idk tho thats just me.
Oh man... The part about Jon's dancing to make his brain get more ideas just hit home for me. I've been working in retail, and there is a lot of downtime with no extra work to be done, so I'm allowed to listen to music and often I softly dance or just work to the rhythm. Man, I always come home with more ideas to work on (art, videos, concepts) than I would if I was home listening to music. Hearing this rang home how much I need to work on my projects outside my home or manage my distractions better.
I think my favorite thing about Satch's videos is that he respects the time and intelligence of the viewers. No bullshit, no dumbing down, no snobbery. Just beautiful, interesting videos that are well thought out and genuine. I can't wait to see what other tips he has!
This is great!!!! Pomodoro and task managers were pure failures for me as well. This is a great companion to your 'Can We Be Too Inspired?' video. I go back and watch it every couple of months. I can say it helped push me in a good direction with my projects!
First of all, I'm so happy to see you back Satch and its great to see you reinventing yourself like this. Second of all, that last point on privacy really hits a mark with me. Its something you don't think about - but it makes perfect sense. Keep things a secret, and you build anticipation to share it. That makes the final release once its at last complete all the sweeter. People do get so wrapped up in sharing their fragments that they never get to work on the whole - and we see that a lot with a lot of creative content creators on Tumblr and Twitter and all the goofy memes about how we have OCs or plot ideas that people love.... but can't seem to ever put together a story for to publish.
I just recently showed my girlfriend your Stanley Parable video after watching the most recent Black Mirror Bandersnatch episode and truly realized how I’d lowered my expectations in regards to content on this platform, seeing this in my notifications made my year!
I’m not gonna lie, I have little to no self discipline. I often find myself procrastinating when I’m not feeling creative, and overthinking myself when I am. This video was pretty motivating, and I hope I can actually put some of this info to use.
YES. Your 22 minute method is amazing. Im constantly trying to make that focused chunk work, and you hit on the exact pain point of Pomodoro and highly scheduled “creativity”: no one... wants that
Satch i have to thank you. You were the driving force for me getting involved in my local game development community. Because of you i discovered the game "That Dragon Cancer", long story short i learned that Josh, one of the creators, lived in my area. I reached out and got connected with him. He invited me to a local game dev meeting and for about the past year and a half i've been attending. I've made some great friends and learned a lot, so thank you for starting me down that path.
Okay fan girl comments aside, i've been trying this out for a few days and you're totally right about the 22 minutes. I found myself getting agitated with my tasks when I started nearing the 30 minute mark. THIS IS SO EXCITING! Thanks for sharing the wisdom Satchell! Great video!!
I just wanna say that Satchel not only inspired me to start pursuing writing as a hobby, but helped me become acclimated to the idea that its okay to just make stuff. Even if it's not something I feel super confident in. It's helped me grow creativity. Thank you for yet another dope video and stay copacetic.
I'm not a creative person nor does my job depend on that, but regardless this is great for project workflow and to keep your brain gears moving, oh and welcome back, we missed you :]
I’ve spent far too much time reading about productivity and organization and far too little time DOING. This was some very excellent advice and very similar to the way I get writing done. 👌🏻
I think the 22 minute method will really help my studies, and my distraction is usually cold walks(thanks Sweden). Physical activity seems to get the ideas flowing for me.
This feels like a more organic approach to productivity, I really appreciate it. A lot of your comments make me feel a bit more confident about the projects I want to undertake this year. Thanks for putting this out. :3
Man, I can totally agree. It's just difficult sometimes to take that first step. I find that once I've made that first move to go forward, the rest comes much easier.
You're a gift, Satch. I'm going to try incorporating this method into my workflow. I find that if I'm making something creative for any reason other than, "because it's fun for me to do", I will quickly lose motivation and stop working on it. And yeah, I've done the thing before where I've shared an idea on social media before even starting on it to try and gauge interest, only to see that idea fall to the bottom of my project list (Although a lot of the time nobody comments on it at all, which I think is more because I don't have a lot of followers. Nonetheless I tend to take it as a general lack of interest). I try not to associate too much meaning to the date rolling over so as not to fall into the trap of giving up on my New Year's Resolution after January, but I can't help but feel you posted this at the start of the year for that very reason... ;)
talkin' about distraction.. i found this channel by searching up on youtube if somebody else has the alias i'm going to use for Let's Plays, had a video by Good Blood come up recommended and was totally distracted by it so i looked in to it, really enjoyed the production quality, and found you on the sidebar of that channel. just proves the point further that one finds the best things when one is not necessarily looking for it, but a balance is totally necessary; gotta stay focused!
I was just gifted a Productivity planner that uses the popmodoro method. While I did not care for that part of it. I really like making a list of 3-5 things that need to be done per day. I struggle with distractions to the point of trying to sneak into my office to get work done and closing the door. I really need to work on finding some good habits that work for me.
I had no idea that my personal needs and struggles had coalesced into a human and formed a TH-cam channel. This video was exactly what I needed after a long, hard day of work.
Sounds good, the distraction principle is something I haven't thought of but actually do when scouting Instagram for images and Inspiration. Also, the privacy issue: so hard for many to do because they feel obligated to post to keep people interested. I know I do sometimes. Nice work Satchell.

This is excellent, good work. You've touched on the privacy point once before in your "Can We Be Too Inspired?" video but it is a point well worth repeating. Since I saw that video I've actually worked more in secrecy and I have been doing a lot behind closed curtains because the unveil is truly a more fulfilling sense of acomplishment. *Releasing when it's done* is a very powerful statement in this day and age and I adore it dearly.
Loved it, 2018 was a bad year for me and i developed a lot of bad habits, tonight i was already feeling down with some challenges but this video gave me the boost i needed, keep on the good work!
New Satch uploads always make my day and come at exactly the right time.. Thanks for the burst of motivation and inspiration for the new year, can't wait to see more soon
This was really helpful. And I thank you for posting this video. The last step was like 1000% what been happening to me when i share my idea I'd lose drive to do them so. Thank you for hitting that source.
Always very happy to see you post a video, and I'm so excited for you! You've come so far, anyone can tell that you are an intelligent creative individual and it's awesome to see you progress. High quality thought provoking work as always
Really good thoughts. Some balance is always required on the "keep good ideas until they're done" front, as so many of us want to be perfectionists who desire to release a "perfect" project. Doing the bad version first is often pretty vital. But I get what you're saying around "sharing the idea" vs "sharing a what you were actually able to accomplish, even if it's not perfect."
Great start, concise info, great tips, can't wait for more! Been trying to have more time management with my creative endeavors. Gonna try this 22 min method.
Hey, great video! Looking forward to this new series and the upcoming episodes. Something I've come to wonder about is what background you have, and with that I mean education and what not. Where does your Love for these creative processes come from? If you've answered these questions before, point me in the right direction!
He’s back! Something perfect to watch to start off the new year. I hope your channel blows up this year, as well. It’s about time you’ve received more support. Let’s go!
I actually think the dancing thing is not “neurological phenomenon of distraction” but rather steady bloodflow to the brain. It works with taking walks or exercising too. Ya know, as opposed to sitting in your room and banging your head against the wall waiting for a masterpiece to show up.
Interesting definition for Pomodoro. I must’ve been using incorrectly for awhile, because I basically used it as your 22 minute method. Wrote down a specific goal/task, set the timer, and ran with it. The breaks helped me since I get bored/stale if I keep going without a break. It also kept me honest since I knew I was on a timer. Never timed out a list of tasks or anything like that. The times I tried that, it didn’t work - just felt overwhelming.
I do the same the same thing! In addition, I mark tallies in a notebook every time the timer goes off, and at the end of the day I mark down in a journal what I accomplished for the day, as well as what to do the next day.
Great to see more of your insight on this medium my dude. Your a talented person with an enlightening perspective on things. Thank you for this video and ill gladly wait until you show us more.
Man Satch, I'm bookmarking this to help get my creative juices flowing. Hope you got some more vids like this in the future, or anything of that matter. I'd be willing to wait however long it might be.
I love your content, it’s so well put together, and thoughtful. Keep it up, you’re great! It gives me a lot of ambition hearing you talk about achieving your goals and getting into the aspects of your life you want to be involved in. It’s inspiring. Thank you.
Hey Satchell, it's been a while since I commented, I always use your comment section as a mini journal entry of sorts. Mostly cause video have always been inspiring, so it's triggers my fingers to type. My world has been crazy the last two years, I got a job in graphic design and videography that took me to Cali, Little Rock, Chicago, Daytona Beach and Back, and I'm only turning 21 in the next few weeks. Life is crazy. I'm gonna be leaving this job in March, aka soon, and my next step is New York. I'm not prepared to leave my parents house but it's time for that leap of faith. I remember not even having the motivation to make music two years ago when I first commented, now I released two songs since last time I commented, one on the 28th of december (last week) and I'm working on an ep I'm hoping to release on the 18th of this month, my birthday. I feel everything around me is spinning with super speed now, but as I'm writing this paragraph, I'm realizing i accomplished a lot more then I even thought I would be able to the last two years. Given I also feel more drained then I ever have felt before, but I'm assuming I'll get used to it. It's crazy how your channel that hardly posts gave me that slight boost in motivation i needed, I was super depressed at the time, now I'm just super scared for the future but I'm pushing strong, just like how it's boosting me now, these tips and tricks are gonna be super helpful once I move.I don't even know how to find a new york apartment yet, or a job, but I'm glad you posted. It feels like a saga in my life is ending soon, and I'm glad I was able to end it the way I started it. Thanks Stachell like a bag Drakes.
Being a tech freelancer I can relate about the struggle to manage my time in a way I can feel it properly spent. At first one thinks "yeah I'm basically free to do whatever, whenever, I'm my own boss", and although that is not a bad thing in itself, it can lead you towards other bad decisions like dismissing projects because other stuff might be better to do, or focusing on more that you can chew. 22 minutes of dedicated creativity seems a fair chunk of time; not too long for it to make you diagram the day around it, yet modular enough to be implemented onto an existing routine to complement it. Being able to be distracted sure is something to be mindful about. And I'm not talking about "yeah I'll just give twitter a quick scroll to see what's new" but to unwind the ideas on the back of your mind.
Truly love this! I feel like these are going to be really helpful for a lot of people. In regards to the "writer's block" portion in terms of FOCUS, I'm wondering.. how would one go about this if instead of writer's block, it's composer's block? I find myself under pressure to produce at times, just getting started on a new song. Coming up with the melody, or a bass line or chord structure I can build upon, but it's often a struggle to come up with something that clicks or that doesn't sound too similar to a pre-existing song. I'm not certain that the 22 minute timer system would work as well in this case. I realize this may be a whole 'nother beast unto itself, but I would love to hear your thoughts on it, even if it meant a different kind of video later on down the line. Especially since I'm thinking there may be an overlap of this with other creative stints such as design and visual arts as well. *shrugs* Anyways, looking forward to more of these, keep up the great work!
TLDR; it depends. What you're creating doesn't largely change the nature of the block or the solution. Writing, drawing, painting, composing, all draw on what you're thinking about, and are fundamentally a type of problem solving. But the method to generate ideas is pretty much the same regardless. It depends on the type of block how to solve it. Do you know the particular nature of what you want to make? What is the song about, or what kind of sounds do you want to play with? If not, you need to figure that out. If it's that you're having trouble coming up with something non-derivative, you need stimulus-a bread machine without ingredients doesn't make bread. Go do something that you enjoy or seek out novel places and experiences, and sincerely engage in what you're doing, and you'll find yourself thinking about things and coming up with ideas as a result. You might also benefit from trying to create 100 sketches without concern for their quality. You can always pick out the good ones and continue working on them after. The timer is a measuring stick and a compulsion to get started. the timed period isn't about creating something good, it's about getting started and inducing focus. Try sitting down and just putting something on the paper without concern for its quality for 20 minutes, and if you want to keep going when the timer goes off, then restart the timer. Your rhythm may be different, so increasing the timer duration can help. You can curate and edit after the timer goes off and you no longer have something to put down on the paper.
Satch videos aren’t daily, weekly, or even monthly, but when they drop they have information to be mined until the next one gets published.
There's a tragic irony that I'm here currently procrastinating half way through a writing session

Attempting to write a novel this year, this was extremely helpful. Satch always delivering the goods
I'm not a creative person nor does my job depend on that, but regardless this is great for project workflow and to keep your brain gears moving, oh and welcome back, we missed you :]
i recently adopted something similar using 15 minute intervals, but I'm upping it to 22! I just love that.
Thanks Satch. This is exactly what I needed to start my new year.
You’re awesome man.

Very well shot. Very useful lessons. Been around since Satchbag's Goods, and you still got it, my man.
Man, I can totally agree. It's just difficult sometimes to take that first step. I find that once I've made that first move to go forward, the rest comes much easier.
Listening to your videos is almost better than watching, that way I can practice whats being taught right now.

You know what gives me more of a hit of dopamine than tweeting out an early-stage idea? A new satchbag video. 100% success rate.
Thanks man. You're still a legend.
I had no idea that my personal needs and struggles had coalesced into a human and formed a TH-cam channel. This video was exactly what I needed after a long, hard day of work.
Yeah.. First time coming across a value like DISTRACTION... thanks 4 sharing
Sounds good, the distraction principle is something I haven't thought of but actually do when scouting Instagram for images and Inspiration. Also, the privacy issue: so hard for many to do because they feel obligated to post to keep people interested. I know I do sometimes. Nice work Satchell.

New Satch uploads always make my day and come at exactly the right time.. Thanks for the burst of motivation and inspiration for the new year, can't wait to see more soon
Wow! That intro is stunning. Gorgeous.
You are a f****** genius m8. This will probably be what helps me pass my exam
This was really helpful. And I thank you for posting this video. The last step was like 1000% what been happening to me when i share my idea I'd lose drive to do them so. Thank you for hitting that source.
Super useful thoughts in here - the points on privacy put into words the exact reason why I managed to put my current side project into action.
Always very happy to see you post a video, and I'm so excited for you! You've come so far, anyone can tell that you are an intelligent creative individual and it's awesome to see you progress. High quality thought provoking work as always
I wish every creator would make a guide like this!
God damn how your content has changed for the better, and you were already great. Keep up the amazing work!!
Words cannot express how badly I needed this video today. Thank you Satch and as always good to see you post

can't think of a better video to start my year with
A Satch video is always a gift.
Great start, concise info, great tips, can't wait for more! Been trying to have more time management with my creative endeavors. Gonna try this 22 min method.
This was stellar, Satcell! I had no clue you had been working on so much rad stuff! Very very cool!!
That ending nod to Outlaw Star was *mwah* sublime.
Love that you're makin videos again man. Hope to see you again soon
Fantastic tips, this is the kind of stuff I need to hear. Welcome back!
Let’s go!
So great to see you again, man. This is going to be great.
I actually think the dancing thing is not “neurological phenomenon of distraction” but rather steady bloodflow to the brain. It works with taking walks or exercising too.
Ya know, as opposed to sitting in your room and banging your head against the wall waiting for a masterpiece to show up.
I needed this! I’m in such a creative rut and have no motivation do create a new body of work. This is a good guide! Thank you!
Looking forward to testing these at work tomorrow, shake things up a bit
It's always amazing when he returns. Quality over quantity.
Interesting definition for Pomodoro. I must’ve been using incorrectly for awhile, because I basically used it as your 22 minute method.

Love the script, love the video production. Damn good video! :)
Best visuals I’ve seen in a TH-cam video in a while.
I love your content, it’s so well put together, and thoughtful. Keep it up, you’re great! It gives me a lot of ambition hearing you talk about achieving your goals and getting into the aspects of your life you want to be involved in. It’s inspiring. Thank you.
Variety and "Down time" for distractions are definitely needed. After all the creative engine needs scheduled downtime for maintenance metaphor.
So good! Privacy aspect is important!
Hey Satchell,
it's been a while since I commented, I always use your comment section as a mini journal entry of sorts.
Thanks Stachell like a bag Drakes.
I'm going to try out that 22 minute strat! Thanks for the knowledge Satch!
Awesome video, came at a perfect time too, I needed to hear this kind of advice not for just the current project but any future ones, thanks Satch ^^
Holy heck I still have that same iPod. Also you are back! Welcome, I missed you Satchell
Being a tech freelancer I can relate about the struggle to manage my time in a way I can feel it properly spent.
SO its True...Satchel is Played by Denzel Washington in The Book of Eli! ^~^
Thank you great advice !
I've seen 150 coffee making edits as video intros... and yours was the best
So im not really the most creative person out there. But I would like to try and make things. Thanks for the list of habits Satch. Happy New Years All
Thanks Satchell!! some great tips, good stuff to think about!
Legit, was listening to this intro song as I walked past a Second Cup, and on impulse I bought a black coffee and a croissant
Visiting rooms other than the obvious. I understand and like that. Peace.
These are some damn good tips, man. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks man, great tips! subscribed
Thank you, Satch.
Great video as always man.
I'll try some of this in writing myself.
I don't know if you're back but it's always good to get new content from you Satch.
It’s like I wished really hard and Satch & Matt D’Avella did the fusion dance. Nice.
1:46 oh sweet! That's Joe Hill! I love his books!

You've been an inspiration for so long, so I'm just a little hyped about this ❤️

Welcome back, Satch. Missed you something fierce.

No joke,
THANKS YOU
Truly love this!
*shrugs*
Anyways, looking forward to more of these, keep up the great work!
You can curate and edit after the timer goes off and you no longer have something to put down on the paper.
thank you
Woo! New Satchel upload!
