Like so many others I also discovered your channel searching for non bias news about the spillway failure and the potential consequences. It didn’t take long to realise that this channel was head and shoulders above anything else out there for accurate Orville updates. I’ve enjoyed all your content ever since. But this brought a tear with the music and beautiful scenery. Thanks.

Dad used to take two weeks off every summer in the '60s from his job at Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard. He borrowed a utility trailer from his friend and that got loaded with cooler, utensils and camping gear. An Army Surplus canvas tent we slept in was tied down over the top. He, Mom, my 3 brothers and I would pile in the station wagon and head out for some camping. More than once, we stopped at the Forest Service camp next to Belden on the Feather River. There were campsites and hot showers for a couple dollars a night. An old-timer gold panner would start up his old Pontiac sedan every night to keep the battery charged. Dad showed us how to pan the black sand.
I first was introduced to Juan's aeronautic journalism and photography when the Oroville Dam nearly failed. I've been enjoying and learning from him ever since. Thanks!

It is interesting to note that a lot of the waterfalls along the river would not be there at normal water levels. They would be seen as creeks flowing into a river. There is a great video showing the bottom contours of the Great Lakes, and the exit of the Mackinaw Channel under I75 is actually a former very high waterfall when the water levels in Lake Huron were really low. I think it is in "Draining the Great Lakes."

@@nancychace8619 Isn't most of the damage from the storm surge from the Pacific Ocean? Sure the rain can create mudslides and it has, but most of the danger comes from the massive waves coming in from the Pacific because of the bomb cyclone in the Pacific Ocean. Those storm surges have nothing to do with rain, despite being connected to a tropical storm. Those waves pushing so far inland is akin to a mild tsunami event. In fact there is more damage NOW than Santa Cruz experienced during our small Tsunami event from the Japan Tohoku 2011 earthquake (9.1 richter scale) that killed thousands of people in Asia. My prayers to those folks who live near the beaches (what's left of them).

From your comment, I'm wondering if you're local or getting your news from the media. Here in the SF Bay Area, where I'm at, almost none of the damage is from the ocean. Most all of it is DIRECTLY related to the heavy rains and the lack of preparation offered by many of the municipalities regarding storm drains, pumps, etc.

Incredible pics! Thanks for the flight tour, much appreciated. I followed the rebuild of Oroville, also the reason the spillway failed...very interesting. This time it's built to last! Happy New Year!

Thanks for the update Juan, I followed your channel during the spillway rebuild! I worked for the Western Pacific Railroad after I graduated from Cal Poly SLO in December 1971. I was a surveyor in my youth on the RR and measured a lot of track between Sacramento and Portolo. We spent most of our time in the Feather River Canyon as it was always a trouble spot during bad weather. The Union Pacific bought out the WP after I move on to do RR research for the Association of American Railroads in 1978! I do enjoy your reports. RandyJ

Growing up in Plumas County I have been by Table Mountain many a times it's a sight to see. I remember as a child that in Native American lore that the Sutter Buttes were located where Table Mountain is but a mighty warrior sliced them off and tossed them to their current location.

So sad, I grew up in Susanville as a kid. Beautiful country side. Our family would travel all around that area. The fires took so much away. Thank you for that tribute.

Thanks Juan. Looked up water level about the same day you posted this. Looks like the lake needs to come up +- 100' in order to test/run that new spillway.
Thanks again for all your great coverage of that project !! Certainly did enjoy every bit of it !!! Hoping to see that spillway get some use this winter !!! ;o)
    Stay safe !!!

You’ll be damn lucky if they don’t tear the dam down so all the fish can swim straight to the ocean instead of saving the water and building more dams in the state to generate electricity and save more water for the state.
