REI endorses all the social justice crap that allows the crime to happen. I stopped giving them my money years ago due to their politics. Glad they’re being forced to shutdown.
Enabling tent/drug/stealing lifestyle is not something a caring society should be doing or allowing. It brings down all of society, even those who believe they are not affected by it. Not only is it a disservice to those living like that but to all of society.
Who could possibly be surprised that a business is leaving Portland ? Come on people! This is the future when a city has no police and criminals run free.

It's the fault of the citizens of Portland that their city is falling apart. Yet, most will accept no blame for their own gigantic stupidity and faulty judgement, and they will keep supporting the same disastrous leadership and policies that got them into this mess. You deserve it, Portland.

@@foundmonster voting democrat. Period. They are the ones who’s policies and regulations and money spending is creating all of this. The the real life proof of that is in the fact that every single democrat ran city is a crime and drug and homeless filled cesspool. They are fakes and phonies and frauds that do not care about anyone or anything but their own power and control. They project every wicked and evil thing that they are in to conservatives but the actual fruit of their spirits is shown in their actions and communities. People need to wake up to their deception and start voting different if any of these cities ever have any hope of being fixed. More policing, stricter punishments for those who chose to break laws. It’s just like raising kids. If you let kids get away with anything and give them anything they want because you want to be the nice parent they will grow up with zero respect for anything and be entitled. The democrats care more about “looking” loving an tolerant then they actually ever have been. Agains proof of that is the lack of love or tolerance for anyone who doesn’t agree with them. True love and compassion is across the board and sometimes has to do difficult things. They refuse to be honest because they only care about looking loving. That’s not love. When you love someone you don’t let them destroy themselves. And you most certainly don’t destroy them yourself. We need an awakening. Not to be confused with wokeness. We need true spiritual awakening so people have the discernment to see what is truly for their own good, and what is keeping them in toxicity for the personal gains of others. Mentally ill people and addicts need help, not to be enabled and celebrated in their crime and mental illness. If the democrats truly cared about what they pretend to, their cities wouldn’t be as messed up as they are. Do you have any idea how many millions of d dollars these cities receive to help the homeless? Where is that money going if our homeless problem is getting worse and not better? It’s time people wake up to the deception of the left and vote differently if they truly care about change. If they say they want change and don’t vote differently, they are just as superficial and phony as the people they are voting for.
This makes me think of the teenager who thinks he knows it all, and is disrespectful to his parents. Then they kick him out and he's overwhelmed how hard surviving in the real world is. That's you, Portland. That's you.
I live in the east and last visited Portland in the 1990s. It was a beautiful, vibrant city. Once this flight starts, it is difficult to turn around. It didn't happen overnight and it can't be fixed overnight. A five-year plan should be developed to clean up the city, enforce its laws, and make business owners and residents feel safe. You can't make bread to feed the hungry if you allow them to steal the ovens and sell the scrap to buy drugs. Secure people and their property first. Make law enforcement visible. Aggressively prosecute and jail lawbreakers. Expel squatters and trespassers.
I agree with you 57, but the voters of Portland do not. The voters do not want a vibrant city, the voters want business to leave their city. And almost certainly the voters will vote for more flight. Great analogy, on feeding the hungry and allowing them to steal the means to feed them.
Never could really afford shopping at REI. And I guess REI realized they could no longer afford operating in an all-crimes-allowed city like Portland. Win-win.
It's a large chain and it's to their advantage to say they're closing because of crime. If they said they were closing because they're not doing great business, that would be a different story...
Covid was a perfect example of how democrats operate. They even admit it. "NEVER LET A CRISIS GO TO WASTE". They were/are willing to destroy the country to gain more power.
REI has all of the perfect equipment for living on the street and building a shelter on the sidewalk. >>> Waterproof everything, ropes, tarps, MREs, camp stoves, fuel, layers of clothing, gloves, knives, flashlights.... everything! This is really going to be a major inconvenience to the looters.
Even though I didn’t grow up in or live in Portland, but the Orlando area, I was born in the Portland area in Hillsboro and I still love all of the Pacific Northwest. I also love REI. It was just 4-5 years ago before we finally got the first two locations in Florida, first around Jacksonville, and then around Orlando, and I was so happy. But if any area or two big cities should have tons of REI stores, they should be Seattle and Portland. Those two cities are just synonymous with the lifestyle that store represents. I hate seeing things like this happening in some west coast cities like Portland, Seattle and San Francisco. Stores closing, vandalism, and homeless camps all over. Most of my memories from those places are from the 80’s and 90’s, and they’re of how beautiful those places are. It’s always been in the back of my mind to move to Portland. But when I see things like I just mentioned, it sadly makes me think it’s maybe not so good of an idea.
For anyone that has ever been to Portland knows , you wouldn’t feel safe walking around that insane asylum in broad daylight on a Sunday alone let alone operate a business in that hell hole .The people in that city deserve what they have made of it .
I used to live on Mount Hood and work for the Forest Service in the 90s. Back then I told people I felt totally safe walking alone in downtown Portland after dark. Sad where it has gone. Stop listening to leftist telling you crime enforcement is racist and you might get it back.
It's sad isn't it. I hear Portland use to be a beautiful city. Much like how California use to be a beautiful state. And the saddest part is these Socialist Democrats don't give a damn. They're so disgusting.
We made the mistake of stopping in Portland on a road trip up north and I have never seen such a nasty place with such nasty, rude, IowIy people in my life.

@@presidentcomacho3816 Humming along nicely in most of the country, but cratering in blue cities. Huge blocks of retail space are being vacated in Portland, San Francisco, Minneapolis, and Chicago. Walmart stores typically measure 150-200K square feet. REIs are around 60-100K. Nordstrom is vacating over 300K in San Francisco, and Whole Foods just abandoned a 65K flagship store that opened less than a year ago. These are huge blocks of space that would be difficult to fill with new tenants during the best of times. Under current conditions, no retailer in their right mind is looking for new locations in cities that favor drug addicts, bums, and thieves over valuable corporate citizens who provide jobs and tax revenue. Additionally, many retail leases have co-tenancy clauses that allow the smaller tenants to cancel their lease, or pay lower rent, if an anchor tenant leaves. This will inevitably lead to lower property values, which means lower assessments and reduced tax revenues. Things will get much worse before they get better.
I dont understand, we did everything right! We shoplifted millions of dollars worth of merchandise, took shits on the sidewalk, allow drug abuse to occur in the bathrooms, and left the stores management and owners with absolutely no recourse or enforcement to protect them. Why would they leave?

I visited Portland this week for a business trip and I couldn’t have been more disappointed. It’s a beautiful city with horrible crime rates and a big homeless problem. I did not see a single cop in over four days that I spent there. We went to Chinatown for some food and I couldn’t find a single Chinese food restaurant. Food was horrible and people were doing drugs on the street. It is truly sad to see people have actually voted for this. We would stay at the Hilton on 6th and walk to the performance. Now stores are closed and walking to the opera house from the Hilton at night could cost you your life. As a result we no longer go to Portland. No reason to. It makes me sad. However, as others have pointed out, this is what the people of Portland want.

FINALLY a company actually gives crime and theft as a reason rather than just call it an "underperforming" location. Similar things have been happening in Minneapolis. How does the Walmart that was busy ALL THE TIME close up for "underperformance"? The Minneapolis -St Paul "Midway" Walmart closed up many years ago. Of the relatively few times I was there, it was a very bustling place. It does not make much sense to me in how that store does not perform, but the one in Hillbillyville 50 miles away apparently performs just fine. There has to be more to it.
I haven't heard one place say that a store was underperforming. They're all saying that the stores closing are because of theft. The people have to know why it's happening
Walmart said it closed two Chicago locations because they "underperformed". The truth is offensive to some people I guess, so Walmart chose to speak in code.

If your vote is worthless where you are, there's not one reason to remain if you can leave, and go somewhere where your vote is worth something. @@steveanimatrix3887 There are a lot of long-standing systemic issues coming to a head in not just Portland, but throughout the US. The impact of Covid made a lot of these problems much more visible all at once and it's been frustrating. Even if we had left drug possession a serious crime as it has been in the past police would still be playing whack-a-mole with our own failed and alienated neighbors. A lot of the repeat offenders for other crimes would be in jail, for sure, but that's not an outcome that can't also be achieved by mandating treatment and providing more humane alternatives and treatment for substance abuse. That 110 would get passed and that state/local governments would fail to build an accountable public system for drug abuse treatment, in-turn paving the way for what we have now was ALWAYS an imaginable outcome, (and for us cynical cunts, seemed the most likely) BUT EVEN STILL that alternative seems better to many than what we would face with criminalization. So while I do hope we refine our state and local laws to better treat drug abuse and its consequences, I'm glad we abandoned the war on drugs. Which by the way, had over 50 years to work. Similar situation here in greater SF/Oakland Bay Area. Homelessness, drug addiction, mental illness, etc leads to increased crime and theft of all sorts. Solution: first establish order and bust the criminality. Zero tolerance which means you arrest, prosecute, and jail. Make it clear, if you commit a crime you will be punished. Call in state national guard to help clear out homeless encampments, and patrol the streets. Enforce the death penalty and execute within 18 months of sentencing.
One of the largest contributors to such problems is the fairy tale that people living on the street are just there due to bad luck. There was research by a large university that found more than 90% of people in 'homeless camps' on the west coast had alcohol or drug addiction problems. There is no homeless problem. It's an addiction problem. You could give these people a million dollar home and they'd be back on the street again if not treated for their addiction.

We would stay at the Hilton on 6th and walk to the performance. Now stores are closed and walking to the opera house from the Hilton at night could cost you your life. As a result we no longer go to Portland. No reason to. It makes me sad. However, as others have pointed out, this is what the people of Portland want.
Only BLM? You forgot Antifa and the rest of SJW. This is a result of your Democrat government policies.

Elections have consequences. They should be embarrassed for the votes they cast
No shame, most of those people voted for this.
I don't think they're ashamed. Unfortunately they are proud to be woke. Until their place is robbed or their car gets broken into. That's how progressive liberals are

"All options" including and most importantly "doing nothing".
When you vote based on feelings and don't realize there are outcomes
I love how the extreme progressive take on crime in Portland has completely backfired. When even stores like Walmart recognize your city is a cesspit, you’ve gone wrong
I don't think its backfired tho. I think this is exactly what globalists want. They have this god complex that you WILL live the way they want u to. The gov has had this whole utopian vision of Ptld for yrs. Ask yourselves why we have to pay our entire lives just to live? Our government should be a quarter of the size it is. Same with Seattle. It's unfortunate.

Walmart closed in San Francisco due to crime and theft and made no excuses. They don't call it the "left coast" for nothing.

Portland, Seattle, etc. are places where any vote against the ruling Party Machine is worthless...nearly as worthless as trying to run a Republican in any of those cities. It's a waste of time, money, effort and energy to remain in a place like Portland if you don't prefer what it has become, because there is zero chance of a single-party oligarchy like Portland or Seattle ever changing course. The only sad part being, how many of the people responsible for the policies that led to this, are ALSO escaping instead of living in their Utopia.

Oregonians voted to decriminalize fentanyl, meth and heroin. Multnomah county voters voted for a DA who explicitly said what he would and wouldn't do, and he's held true to what he ran on. You want to blame someone, it's everyone looking in the mirror who lives in one or both of those places and voted for it. There is no surprise here. Quit blaming the people you voted for. It's the voters who are the problem.
We've barely had 2.
