Thanks for that clip. It brought back a lot of great memories. I flew out of Paro a few years ago after touring Bhutan. We were told by the crew not to panic if the mountains looked close, they were close. It felt like we were flying up a valley following the contours. The airport check-in were very particular about the luggage weight because the aircraft balance was very critical. Bhutan is a beautiful country, one of my favourite destinations.

But they did what they did for reasons and were actually quite good at it. Example: flying less than 200ft above a hill as part of approach then rapidly descending to the runway as soon as they cleared the hillside. It's nail biting the first time, but these guys have practiced it. Also, they don't fly jumbo jets. They stick to much smaller craft, I think around a dozen seats or so? I only had one maiden flight with a very experienced ULM pilot over the Grand Canyon du Verdon in the Alps in France, but I can assure you I remember every little bit of that flight beginning of the ‘90’s. Seated in something like a plastic chair you would put in your garden, small wheels you could even touch with your hands because there was no closed canopy, taking off was easy with an airstrip slope of about 20%. Nice flight over the canyon where I was allowed to take control, then came the landing. Pilot had taken control again, I took pictures. Approach was a left roll of nearly 90 degrees to get in line and at the right altitude followed by a sharp pitched up flare to get in line with the sloped airstrip. Following was a very smooth touch down, and a roaring of the engine to get the plane completely uphill again. All respect to mountain flyers!

It's definitely a dangerous approach, but many of the approaches in the Himalayas are. Some airports there look more like ski jumps than runways. I've never flown there, but I, like a lot of people, know about it and how crazy it can be. I don't feel comfortable flying a light aircraft in the Rocky Mountains where winds can be tricky. I can only imagine trying to stick a landing there. For that reason, it seems just a bit insane to me to be videoing with a cell phone while on approach to a place like that. That's just begging for trouble.

It might not be the full story but it’s a bit more of the story at least.

Awesome Stuff , it’s very well researched and thorough. Something the public need to know if that there is always a “sink “ at almost flatter height requiring more flare than usual

There's a video in the channel called Sam Sui. The flight was into Paro, Bhutan.
That's a beautiful video you don't wanna miss.

Of special interest to me because FS2020 has this Paro landing challenge. I learned the hard way that you have to start that right turn around the foot of the mountain almost before you see the runway. Weird how similar the FS approach scenery is to this the real footage. I dodn't see the yellow house tho'. Thanks.

@ Michael Marks I appreciate that you mentioned, as also reported by pilots who have flown there, that you are committed almost before you can see the runway

I know these pilots may not have been all that smooth and one bad piloting move kudos for anyone who can have "the right stuff" to land in a most difficult airport.

I’m glad you made the point about filming because it was the question I had all through the video!
