I got to study with Chris Coleman for 2 years and to this day he is still a friend/mentor/teacher. 5 things I’ve learned from Chris 1. “Find the music” one thing he would always say to me is “find the music in what ever you’re playing, I don’t care if it’s a single stroke roll it’s not an exercise it’s music.” This came to life in a lesson where I was watching him workout some independence over an Astinato. He just played singles on his 8” Tom but it grooved, and felt like it had musical value. 2. Play intentionally not habitually. He would have me learn tracks and when I would play through them he would stop after I did something and ask “why did you do that?” Not that it’s right or wrong, but what was it’s purpose, how did that serve the music. 3. This one I’m still trying to wrap my head around. This was at the last lesson I did with him not too long ago. I came to him with a track from Kaz and after I played through it he said “do you know what your roll to this track is? Some tracks you’re the color to the track and some the track is color to you... which is it with this track?” I couldn’t answer... he started going through each track that he plays and telling me his roll to those specific tracks. Then he asked me again “what is your place in the track?” 4. It’s not about chops but about creating a sound. He was at my studio about a year ago and he was getting ready to head to Russia to record for an artist out there and he was telling me all the drummers they had hired to do the record (some really big names) but none of them were creating the vibe and sound the artist wanted so they called Chris who had done previous records with him to come do it. He said it’s about creating a sound and a vibe, not chops. 5. This one isn’t about drums but about being a humble person. I met Chris at the baked potato in LA back in 09” one thing he did that has always stuck out to me was he went around to every table and said “hi, I’m Chris thank you for coming out to the show, we really appreciate it and hope you guys have a good time.” I have been to the baked potato many many time and I’ve never seen any of the musicians do that. That’s always stuck out to me. Not just a great drummer but a humble dude also.

Wow. Impressive. Amazing and definitly a game change for anyone who can afford this one life oportunity chance. All the points are challenging, but the 5th is something really big and nice to rely on. Be true to yourself, but humble. That's what Christ did and all of us should do. No mattet how many anything you've achieved in this life, without two we're nothing: love and humbleness. Peace be with you and the channel's owner! And... One more thing, if a not abusing your good will... I want to see a video of yours playing what you've learned from and with him. I love Chris. He's seems to be a very special guy.
Good principles! I have any number of drummers I really like. From Jim Keltner to Sonny Emory, to Vinnie, and on onto infinity. The most valuable thing I learnt from my favourites? The value of space, and that is a timeless universal. `The music lives in the space between the notes' - Mozart.
Eric Moore ii, not only does he have chops, he has the groove and the taste to go along with it. The only things I have been able to make a pale replica of is, inverted paradiddles, and the use of the go go beat accent patterns in a groove, especially when swung.
Great video man, well explained points and that transition into Chris playing was fire! I saw Chris a few years ago in Glasgow I think, blown away. It was like half drum clinic half stand up, really funny guy and a great outlook on life in general! Mark Guiliana has to be one of my top influences but it's constantly changing. I like his flow and I've noticed a few times he goes to play something but then holds himself back. I haven't seen anyone do that before and it's pretty crazy, it's like in his head he just has an instant change of thought.

My wife was with me and she loved it too even though she isn't a drummer. Mark is special for sure. I noticed that he does that too. To me, that shows he is super conscious of what he is doing. It's improvised but not mindless...which I think is the perfect blend.
