I was fine with his answer until he said that he considers them not special because the listener doesn't have a familiarly with the general rock and pop catalog of the 1970s!!!! Like what?! What freaking rock bands sound like steely dan in the 70s? Maybe Chicago, but even that's pushing it

These are really 'feel like' numbers. It's like you enjoyed an album but you can't give it an 8 because not all tracks were equally good and unskippable or something like that. When you listen and experience an album, it's easy to think what number fits it the most. If you enjoyed half of the album, and other half was like mediocre, well it's decent 5 - light 6 for you I guess.

Fuck it, here's the entire industrial society and it's consequences:
Introduction 1. The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster Tor the human race. They have greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in "advanced" countries, but they hitvc destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world. The continued development of technology will worsen the situation. Il will certainly subject human beings lo greater indignities and inflict greater damage on the natural world, it will probably lead to greater social disruption and psychological suffering, and it may lead to increased physical suffering even in "advanced" countries. 2. The industrial-technological system may survive or it may break down. If it survives, it may eventually achieve a low level of physical and psychological suffering, but only after passing through a long and very painful period of adjustment and only at the cost of permanently reducing human beings and many other living organisms lo engineered products and mere cogs in the social machine. Furthermore, if the system survives, the consequences will be inevitable; There is no way of reforming or modifying the system so as lo prevent it from depriving people of dignity and autonomy. 3. If (lie system breaks down the consequences will still be very painful. But the bigger the system grows the more disastrous the results of its breakdown will be, so if it is to break down il had best break down sooner rather than later. 4. We therefore advocate a revolution against ihe industrial system. This revolution may or may not make use of violence: il may he sudden or il may be a relatively gradual process spanning a few decades. We can'l predict any of that. Bui we do outline in n very general way the measures that those who hale the industrial system should take in order to prepare the way for a revolution against that form or society. This is not lo be a political revolution. Its object will be lo overt h ro w not governments but the economic and technological basis of Ihe present society. 5. In this mliclc we give atlcnlion to only some of ihe negative developments Hurt have grown out of llie industrial-technological system. Other such developments we mention only briefly or ignore altogether. This docs not mean that we regard these other developments as unimpor- tant, For practical reasons we have lo confine our discussion lo areas thai have received insufficient public attention or in which we have something new lo say. For example, since there arc well-developed environmental and wilderness movements, we have written very little about environmental degradation or the destruction of wild nature, even though we con- sider these lo be highly important. , - •

The grading scale seems to confuse many people. First, it’s specific to each artist, not a scale which every artist is judged. Secondly the scale goes: NOT GOOD/0/1=Trash. 2/3/4=Below par, disappointing. 5/6/7=Good, possibly great, but not the artist’s best work. 8/9/10=Fantastic, artist met potential or outdid expectations.
Producer tags: helps make sure producers get credit as they did not received much credit for a long time.

I could see that Steely Dan response coming but I still think it’s a blind spot of Fantano’s to be so dismissive of the Dan. So much of the historical backlash against the band is unwarranted and the product of the cultural backlash that punk produced against so-called “dad rock.” It’s true that their jazz can be a tad smooth and their songwriting a bit dated even by the standards of the time, but this is bc the rock, soul and jazz literacy of Fagen and Becker is quite astonishing in its breadth. Listen to Aja’s title track, with Wayne Shorter’s brilliant sax performance over the odd, floating harmony of the bridge/outro and tell me that sounds like elevator music to you.
the commenters mention of the lyrics seems to be overlooked too - Fagen’s recollections of beat lifestyle are a filmic homage to the character of the reject that sits starkly at odds with the glitzy culture of “yacht rock” that Dan went on to inspire. Even if it’s not your cup of tea, i don’t think Steely Dan deserves to be written off as mediocre. Their reappraisal is long overdue.

And Dan is a great example of all 3

    • @mandobrownie
      @mandobrownie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

I totally agree. There seems to be a sort of lower key re-appraisal of groups that did combos of jazz and pop, jazz fusion more generally, and things sort of called "sophisti-pop".
Melon's judgement of them as a bit too elevator music kind of shouldn't make sense anymore: elevator music is millennial pop and pop-rap crossovers now. Elevator music hasn't been smooth jazz for such a long time. That kind of smooth jazzy music isn't really present in retail playlists, spotify playlists, etc. at all anymore. So, at least for people who like music as more than background, stuff like Steely Dan will likely sound new to a lot of people, new in a way that might be exciting despite the smoothness.
It's disappointing that Melon thinks they're kind of boring, because I think Melon prides himself on only thinking that something is boring if it doesn't have any substance to it. Steely Dan has so much substance, between their lyrics, to their interplay between melodic and harmonic elements, to their use of rhythm as a mechanism for enlivening melody and harmony, to their very simple production style. How is it that an artist like Mark Kozelek, whose music is almost intentionally supposed to be support background to the lyrics, to Melon is a non-boring artist, while the Dan, a band abounding with so cohesive elements, a sort of boring band?

    • @ayden201

I recently got really into their music and have so far listened to all their albums pre-hiatus, and I can confirm. Their range in style and atmosphere is astonishing to me, sure you can attribute the origins of yacht rock to them, but that's talking just Aja. You can't dismiss their other stuff, like the apocalyptic and strikingly real concept album that is The Royal Scam, the smooth but dark counterpart to Aja with Gaucho, or even the tongue-in-cheek and oddly mischievous collection of songs on Katy Lied. I'd argue their debut album is the weakest one, back when they hadn't fully discovered their niche, but past that I really don't think they can be written off easily.

System of a Down is *fairly* suuuuper Nu-Metal. Sorry...

Because I mean about 900% of what I loved was DEF Nu-Metal, but it was usually the kind that had nothing at all to do with rap as a genre. Unless we're talking instrumentally? Like just... in a sparse... groove kinda way? (I'm mainly thinking about Coal Chamber right now as an example, btw.)
I kinda think that the whole "rap-metal" thing is a pretty tenuous description, tbh.

@@FKDotFitzgerald i once went to a beach in rockland, mass that was a 100 yards wide, covered in weeds, and still recovering from a rain storm earlier that week. it was awesome.
in fairness we have cape cod and martha's vineyard in mass but the tourism front is the trade off for the well maintained coastline it seems.

I feel like so many people can't understand Fantano's rating system and see that 7 for him is GOOD. Also whether you think albums with that score deserves to be higher or not, just remember... Fantano literally listens to music for a living and has gone through thousands of tunes. Of course his standards are going to be higher and more thought out. The dude has given some of my most fave bands shitty scores but I'm not ragging on him because I know something profound to me isn't the same for him. Different strokes and experiences, people.
