    Lex, many years ago a very good friend worked at a medical testing facility as a part of her doctoral program. This was a Federal facility and her specific unit was working with cannabis. This was in the 1970s. She gave us the information that all of their cannabis was being grown in government facilities in Mississippi along the river. She was never more specific than that. She also told us that the cannabis she worked with was among the most potent in the world. I might add that she was never indulged in smoking anything.

    PPFD = [ (uMol/m^2) / sec ] is a better way to write it, which gives the physical intuition of the concept.
    uMol is the number of things (Photons)... and m^2 is the square area.
    uMol/m^2 is the things in an area.
    [Things in area]/second is how many things are in an area if you count for one second. This idea lets you average it all out so you can get one number instead of hundreds which is confusing.

  • @caminochef1132

    600 PAR @ 18 hours is the exact same amount of light as 900 PAR @ 12 hours.
    When you say "400- 600" for Veg and 600 - 900 for flower, it's bad info, misleading.
    If someone is switching to flower and running at 600 PAR, if they switch to flower and keep it 600 they're cutting the light by about 30% over all.
    If you're switching to flower and running at 500 PAR. Just multiply 500 x 18(hours). Take the total and divide by 12 (hours), that's the same PAR as 500.

    I’m just finishing my first grow. I ran hps 1000’s vs Electric Sky 300’s. All clones from same mother. Same nutrition. Same pots. Same grow medium. Same room separated by a few feet. Not even close hps lost big time. Es 300’s were at least 25% bigger in every aspect. In a couple weeks we will have yield weights.

    • @Des420

      Why can't you LED fanboys ever just be honest? Same story, same nonsense, same bullshit math that cannot ad up. A single 300w draw LED isn't capable of yielding more than a 1K HPS. It's closer to about 500w draw to start getting close to 1k HPS and you need about 600w just to start closing in on a 1k DEHPS, so no. You're also describing a grow op setup and not what a first time grower would have. You also go from "I'm/my" to "we", so you are just lying out of your ass about everything as a whole.

    Important note: the 600-900ppfd for flowering is meant for photoperiod plants on 12/12 cycle. But if you're doing autoflower plants and flowering them under say 18/6, then you're better sticking with 400-600ppfd. The only reason the ppfd is increased during flowering is to compensate for the shorter time the lights stay on, but that might not be the case when growing autoflower plants. Look up DLI (Daily Light Integral); the ppdf should be based on the number of hours the plants are under the light; the more hours you keep your lights on, the lower the ppdf needs to be. 400-600 is meant for 18 hours on/6 hours off. If you're doing longer or shorter hours then simply add or subtract the percentage increase or decrease in light hours to these ppdf values.

    • @42071
      @42071 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So there isn't much info when i just tried looking this up, are you sure that Autoflowers have the same DLI as photoperiods? I've heard that auto's have higher DLI's so they do want the higher amount of ppfd throughout the light period, but there isn't much in terms of what the dli for cannabis is. I've seen 30 moles for photoperiods and upwards of 40 for autos, but nothing in terms of actual studies.

    • @arthur78
      @arthur78 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it varies widely depending on strain. I had an auto that got very light stressed at 900ppfd for 16 hours. She's much happier at 500-600ppfd. While another auto from a different strain was totally fine under 1500ppfd for 18 hours. The numbers in Lex's video are general guidelines, but what's optimal for your particular plants might be different. Luckily the plant will usually let you know if it's getting too much light, so you can test, observe and adjust.

    • @LexBlazer
      @LexBlazer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, as I kinda imply here again when talking about the Mexican Sativa that was tested - there's always strain-specific truths that you'll only discover once you grow a certain strain a while. My numbers are always just the rough guidelines.

    • @arthur78
      @arthur78 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also I suspect that plants might have different tolerances depending on the light spectrum used (e.g. Blue/Red LEDs vs. Full spectrum white). Room temperature is another factor, since its closely tied to plant metabolic and photosynthetic rates.

    • @Michael-s2p3p
      @Michael-s2p3p 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d like to see a study of the effect of CO2 and ppfd on autoflowers. There isn’t a lot of information on DLI targets for cannabis, even less for autoflowers specifically.

    You are a great Teacher. I wish I could contribute. I am on a fixed budget from a disability. I am a recovering alcoholic with stage 3 cirrhosis. Cannabis has helped me in recovery for I was at a stage 4 just 2 years ago with a bleak outlook. I quit alcohol but realized I was self medicating for anxiety. Well I didn't want to use anti-anxiety medication for they are much more addicting and harmful in my opinion. Plus I am on a plethora of medications to treat the symptoms of Liver Disease and not to mention the most important one costs over $2500 monthly for 2 pills daily for life. It's called Xifaxan 550mg. Ridiculous. Anyways I wanted to thank you for your lessons. I tell and talk about your life lessons in cannabis cultivation. I was using Sunleaves Luma 2.0 ballast and hood but I cannot afford to grow using that. Hopefully I will afford a decent small LED GROW light so I can try my luck indoor once more. Just harvested way small grow for how much power I had to use🤬 very discouraging it was. It was the lights being too much in a small area.

      @@bastianm5478 I am a Sr. Biosystems Engineer, Agricultural. I got you covered.
      Ok so ppfd, C02 and Nutrient ppm are a function. See Below
      The Nutrient feedings are based on using Fox Farm Soil from the beginning. You shouldn't have to feed Nutrients until mid Flower. Feeding in veg only should occur if your plant eats up all the food in Fox Farm soil. Your plants leaves will tell you if so. This generally happens only if you stayed in a particular pot size to long or past 3 weeks. Generally, Fox Farm Soil has enough reserves until your next Transplant. If u plan to stay in the pot size longer than 2-3 weeks then feed accordingly. Usually 1 Feeding will give you another 2 weeks.
      Seedlings:
      Day 1-30 = 165ppfd (party cup)
      Day 31= Transplant to 1 Gallon
      Day 31-45 = 200 ppfd
      Day 45 = Transplant to 3 Gallon
      Day 45-65= 250-300 ppfd
      Day 65 = Transplant to 5 Gallon
      Day 65- until Flower 300 ppfd
      (Transplant how you best see fit, u do not have to follow my scientific regimen)
      Transition to Flower
      Day 1-30 = 500 ppfd CO2 700ppm
      Day 35 -75 = 700 ppfd CO2 900ppm
      ⚠️ Warning ⚠️
      Do not go over 750 ppfd without CO2 supplementation of 1000ppm or greater or your plants can/will turn to a hermaphrodite.
      C02 must always be 200ppm above your ppfd.
      C02 supplement table below:
      500 ppfd = C02 700 ppm
      700 ppfd = C02 900 ppm
      900 ppfd = C02 1100 ppm
      1000 ppfd = C02 1200ppm
      (83°F leaf temp is required for adequate photosynthesis for ppfd above 700)
      Tip: Never exceed 1,000 ppfd otherwise you burn the capitate-sessile, capitate-
      stalked, and capitate-bulbous trichromes
      and volatize your flavornoids, cannabinoids, thc and terpenes. You deplete the aroma by 85% as terpenes are extremely volatile. They evaporate at temperatures above 71°F after harvest and at 87°F or greater during flower from heat occurring from ppfd above 1000-1200. Nutrient ppm should match your ppfd. Feed Nutrients every 4th watering. Ppfd, C02 ppm and Nutrient ppm should match. Except C02 ppm should always be +200 to allow the plant to keep up with carbon dioxide.

    Is this to assume the seedling and veg are on a 18/6 and flowering is 12/12 which then means, after calculating MOL (using your medium values),... "uMol * 60 * 60 /1m * hours = MOL"
    seedling (18hr): 21.06
    Veg (18hr): 32.4
    Flower (12hr): 32.4
    Now, I'm understood above 30 for flower is cost effective and I do beleive the seedling is in a good value, but having the same MOL for veg and bloom is a normal thing?

      @@fakename7570 I expect at least 1g / W of electrical light power. With a 300W LED source I pull 10-12oz of top grade buds. That said, sunlight puts this to shame. I'm confident I'm not even at half, maybe even a quarter of the light I need to max out yields, but I really have no way to know

      @@ansmerek thanks for the quick reply. Doesn't a 300w light lose a lot of PPF even at 2ftx2ft? It falls down to 120 PAR at the edges, how can this be viable if 600-900 PPFD is desirable for flowering?

  • @doomslayer9513

    Hey Lex, I got a question and really hope you can answer...
    I am growing 10 regular Afghani kush plants and they are 32 days old from seed, and I tried to rub my fingers around the main stem up and down to smell them, and 8 of those plants smells very soft and flowery (delicious), while the other two smells like sweat and piss, kinda like what you smell if you run on a treadmill at the gym...
    My question is, is that a good indicator to sexing my plants? like do I have 8 females and 2 males right now?
    Thanks in advance and hope you have a great day!

    • @lunareclipse1482
      @lunareclipse1482 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      NO NO NO. A better indicator would be the pre-sexual traits at the nodes of young plants. Male plants have a penis or knob looking mini structure (stamina) at the node lol. What you are describing is genetics. All seeds contain different genetics - different phenotypes and genotypes. Go do some research. Also males plants grow taller and more distance between the nodes or branches (leggy).

    • @LexBlazer
      @LexBlazer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      now, now, lux isn't meaningless; tell that to outdoor growers. But PAR is more useful indoor for both optimizing light intensity AND making sure the lights you're using are actually what you think you paid for.

    • @RubsNL
      @RubsNL 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LexBlazer that's a fair point, lux gives you a reasonable indication of light conditions outside. Even inside for some lights, but with these LEDs lux is pretty useless though. Regardless, PAR gives a much better indication of what a plant will do than lux, so I much prefer it.
