Vietnamese property developer Truong My Lan was sentenced to death by a court on April 11, 2024, after she was found guilty of masterminding Vietnam’s largest fraud case. The court found the 67-year-old swindled US$12.5 billion from the Saigon Commercial Joint Stock Bank (SCB) over the course of a decade. The verdict came at the end of a five-week trial in Vietnam's business capital Ho Chi Minh City. Eighty-five others also face verdicts and sentencing for their roles in the crime.

Vietnam does not mess around!
Imagine how fast corruption would drop if we had punishment like this for white-collar crime here in the U.S.
Corruption in USA? Difficult to imagine.. Unless it's only in high places.. I don't think average low ranking government employee may be corrupt
and all the money goes to the government instead of returning to the victims. vietnamese government wins after all.
Housing prices would be a lot cheaper
Viet nam is one of the most corrupted country in the world. I'm Vietnamese and I know. Truong My Lan is just a scapegoat for higher officials.
I know right! Trump would of already been in the slammer.
Maybe we a get the Vietnamese to run our judicial department. Too many corrupt politicians in America get away with absolutely everything.
And there are no corrupt people in Vietnam who get away with everything? You have a lot to learn.
Money can't buy every thing, but in Vietnam a lot, lots of money can buy anything and government officials.
@@Tideo123 Well it seems she couldn't buy the justice system in Vietnam she's in the wrong country In the Philippines death penalty was abolished & no corrupt billionaires in PH jails
I know right! Trump would of already been in the slammer.
@@alexisfreezeit'll thinthe numbers quite nicely
How does it take 11 years to notice 12.5 billion isn’t where it should be.
Money, money, money is power.
@@pointlesskid7779 Yeah but that goes back to the original comment, if money is power how did it take 11 years to notice it's not there (I'm guessing bribes and whatever tactic you use to defraud the government)
Look at the US Defense department lol
It's not a scam, it's about a corruption problem
Yeah no kidding buddy
It's part of Vietnamese DNA.

You can almost feel how nervous she is in that video. Oh well, you reap what you sow...
Her body language shown impatient
@dale
Karma at its finest.
If 12.5 B I L L I O N didn't buy her a Judge or a Presidential Pardon she should be nervous.
That's a look of , " I can't believe this is happening, and why isn't my money protecting me?"
I just can't comprehend why do you even take that much money just for a single person's needs?
Greed knows no bounds
To bribe others.
greediness😩
true as that is, are we supposed to feel sympathy for the bank? they're greedy monsters too
Buy shoes
why does a person need so much money for? sighzzz the greed...
She didn't do it alone. She had people in high and low places covering for her like the president of Vietnam. Bribing people isn't cheap.
Because some of us want to be Doofenshmirtz but don’t have a rich ex-wife
@@TooFabulous2Dyeyes, it’s an organized crime syndicate. They’re all taking a piece of that cake.
this law should be worldwide
I agree
100% of government officials in some countries dead
So all countries that dont have death penalty should get it?
? The deterrent didn’t stop her doing the crime!
Death penalty for stealing a few bucks 💵? call upon all nations to protect her life.
"Lan will face additional charges".. Additional to death?
She owes them money when she is reborn.
Actually, the death sentence is the highest, the additional ones were 20 years and 14 years in prison, but we take the highest to be the final sentence.
is Taking her life a crime in itself?
@@TtvFortew3No. A government may wield the sword to inflict wrath upon those who do wrong.

The ex-prime minister of Malaysia Najib did not get a death sentence, in fact the Malaysian King pardon him for embezzling billions of dollars. Another few more years Najib is a free man.
Whether something is embezzled or not, depends on the actual.. case... and the laws applied. Hence, why it is indeed important to both KNOW the language, as well as the actual... law.. and the framework etc.
f the law
Malaysia boleh
We aren't sure if he's really in jail
malaysia is more corrupted than u think
This form of punishment should apply here in the US for serious financial crimes.
The total amount of fraud amounted to 44 billion USD, equal to the total GDP of neighboring countries Laos and Cambodia combined. (2023) and about 10% of Vietnam's GDP (Vietnam's GDP in 2023 is 440 billion USD)
Total amount USD12.5 billion + USD27 billion to pay to SCB = USD39.5 billion, about 9.5% of Vietnam GDP.
She did not admit guilty and pushed it to her subordinates that it was their fault just like Najib’s 1MDB case. It is rare to get death sentence for a white collar crime but the court had to pass the sentence owing to the huge amount being robbed.
Actually the amount of money around 42B. 27B can not be recover and 12.5B is the money she embezzled for herself in 12 years.
How much Týs she owns in real estates right now. Just auction and paid for the damages. No auction and put to your pockets!

Same here in India.. 😂

Fun fact: her daughter is Elizabeth Chu, chairwoman of the Hong Kong based ZS Hospitality Group.
ehh idk if the daughter has any business with this case but who know ?
Just two comments. Firstly, this is a very serious crime as she treat the bank deposits like hers. This is a bank with deposits from the public, for God's sake. Secondly, it is interesting to see the defendants in blue, they were just lying down and cover their faces.
the trial is long, and probably they were nervous waiting for the sentence
Similar to FTX case, taking customer deposit as theirs
The defenders are doing just their job. You can’t blame them for what their clients committed. They must do their job whether they want to or not. The law does force defender to protect their client.
But it doesn’t mean that they at the same don’t have feelings or thoughts that their client should be sentenced if it is required to the death. And it doesn’t mean neither that don’t have thoughts or feelings that they their clients are responsible for their actions and for committed crimes.
I’m willing to bet she won’t spend 30 years waiting for the sentence to be carried out.
Why aren't Sam Bankman and Elizabeth Holmes getting this?
anyone know how they will do it? Curious about methods used in countries that have the death penalty
SBF should be thanking his lucky stars he lives in lawless America
SBF would’ve gotten death penalty if he’s in Vietnam, what a fraud case
Jamaica needs this. Then the banks here would stop stealing our money
looks like someone didn't share and became a scapegoat
0:01. Madoff stole 4x as much as she did, but he was only sentenced to life in prison. Something about it seems off.
Meantime I'm racking my brain to find the cheapest way to score mobile data from my ISP
I wonder if her county will let her appeal for 40 years?
bro, she is over 50, might as well life imprisonment or dead
No way . Will go 3 instances of judges more.if they agree with the sentence. Will be done in 6 month
She seems upset about additional charges.
Homie don't play that!
This law should be in Nepal too

Things may not be perfect in Vietnam but - its still heaven compared to World's Biggest Landfill - India.
Failed State India ranks 111 on Hunger Index, 134 on HDI, 180 on EPI, 126 on Happiness Index
India's GDP per capita is less than that of Namibia. Just imagine how fortunate you are to be Born in Vietnam🙏🙏
As Indian I agree strongly
no way 126 on happiness index
i'm from vietnam but i saw more people in india seems to be happier than most of us

Needs to happen in the UK In Scotland this would now be a minor crime thanks to the corrupt SNP and Police.!
Excellent
This kind of a law will never ever apply to my country.
SCMP should know "Lan" is neither her family name nor her given name.
We need something similar here in Canada .
Same here in the US.
If she did this in the US she would get house arrest in a mansion and get to play x-box thru the sentence
From a former market stall vendor to property tycoon to corrupt mastermind
US needs to learn from Vietnam
Why don't they mention where the money was lost to? Also why don't they explain what embezzlment is and how it was possible?
Maybe due to the time constraint of the video. Keep in mind that this channel is not from Vietnam. The media in Vietnam has such information widely published.
Penalties for repeat offenders are more severe...
Let's hash your statement, I'm bored. If the offender is dead, how does he or she repeats?
A former market stall vendor?
Ukraine hv a comedian
and more so with the media hyping it....
She's such a fool. I would have stopped after i stole just $1B.
That brings to mind 🤔
I think they are mis using the death Penalty 😢
We gonna find that 12,5 billion dollar under the sea 🔥🔥🔥
(It's a running joke here that she hide her fortune under the sea)

12.5 thousand usd in Vietnam would be pretty rich actually.

Init wtaf. Like lock her up for the rest of her life sure since she's 67 yrs old anyway, but the death penalty?? I don't agree with the death penalty in general.
She’s being made an example of. Vietnam isn’t a particularly wealthy company they can’t afford to have their economy manipulated like that l. Nothing strikes fear and deters would be swindlers like knowing doing something like this could put you on death row.
she would be a politician in american 😂
sentenced to death + tax
She took lessons from joe and hunter🤣🤣🤣
Should have stopped at the first billion
In Indonesia, she will be release in few months
If she was in #Pakistan, she would be a #PrimeMinister on the very day she could be convicted of the crime like #ShahbazSharif (#form47) #SelectednotElected #PrimeMinister of #Pakistan or #PresidentofPakistan #AsifAliZardari 😅😢
why she not run after got $2 billion
@goldegg0 They chose the time that had the least impact on Vietnam's economy to arrest. In big cases like this in Vietnam, the defendant has been tried 1 million times with 1 million previous results. She was specially monitored, banned from leaving the country, and not allowed to change her passport...
Her leaving the country with 2$billion will effect Vietnam economy. Of course they wouldn’t let her leave that easily because it will hurt their country
GREED!!!!
😢😢😢😢.
In Malaysia corruption over billions can have discount 50% on the sentence and the monetary penalty.
How much money does an individual actually need? We leave earth with one sheet and a toe tag
In Indonesia, she will only get 1-3 years jail time
welll, we must be communist country to solve this corruption look at china, vietnam and north korea as a prove
we must be comunist country if we want free corruption look at china, north korea and vietnam
we must be coomunist country if we want free corruption look at china, north korea and vietnam
we must have the same system the like vietnam, china and north korea they have free corruption
sure.
They said death every day, but she is like a fresh fish every day. Who beleive?
Thats a lot of dollars,, maybe she can pay for her freedom
A big phat problem
The real question will the money she took be return to veitnam or is it lost forever?
It's nothing in my country Nigeria, a former governor currently stole 80 billion naira.. He can spend 1 million naira per day for years.. Why do they need to steal century worth of money.. 🤔
why the one who receive all the money from the bribery isn't be punish too?? hypo
What about her family?
They are both charged, the daughter serve 17 years sentence whilst the husband's case is mentioned in the video
Is she first person to be sentenced to death for scams?
Scam are everywhere, no matter where you go. This is just one of the first major scams being release in public while others are not
not the first time, definitely not the last as well
No. China executed 3 people for embezzlement and bribery in the past few years - including a Mongolian. The Chinese are really cracking down on these crimes.
That whole country is corrupt asf
I don't think she should be put to death for fraud, she should be able to pay it back or do some kind of community/state service- but then again this is Vietnam and they may take this more seriously. I know she is a crook, but I feel bad for her.
I aint gon hold u Death is still pretty OD
This proves that the death penalty is not a deterrent as some claim. If not even smart people (not many people know how to pull something like this off) are afraid of it, how do you expect people with medium or low IQ to think about the consequences?
Yeap she played the game so she gonna have to take the prizes lol
Take note.....filter those billions down to others who can take you down.
Real estate agents are some of the worlds biggest shitsacs
