Franco Corelli in Parma - Tosca - "Vittoria! Vittoria!" (English subtitles)

Not only Corelli's prolonged B-flat at the climax of "Recondita armonia"; his twelve-second A-sharp on "Vittoria!"; and his 22-second "discogliea dai veli" with unbelievable control of the diminuendo in "E lucevan le stelle", but also the audience's explosive frenzy and participation has to be heard to be believed.
The shouts for "bis" after "E lucevan le stelle" went on seemingly forever. The audience was absolutely livid at being denied the encore and over and over drowned out the orchestra until Corelli hand signaled that he would sing for them after the opera, which he does, the most soulful and impassioned "Core 'ngrato," after a piano is rolled onto the stage.

Some people need their morning coffee to wake up. This does it for me every time. What a magnificent artist Corelli was. And the audience response is not intrusive or annoying as applause can sometimes be when you're listening to music. It's a spontaneous eruption that is genuine.

Corelli's voice was perfect for Cavaradossi. He studied the role for 4 years before singing it,while he was already a top tenor.

Astounding! How he sang that "Vittoria" all on one breath is superhuman! He was made for this role (and many others)! It's thrilling just to hear this on TH-cam. In person the audience must've felt lifted to the top of the theater!

The Parma Tosca is one of those legendary nights in the annals of opera. Corelli is at an otherworldly level. I think people often leave nit-picking comments about great artists to show that they have some sort of "discernment" or "taste". I find it unnecessary and disloyal. At least they 'll have the comfort of knowing that the days of this sort of great, genius, passionate"crowd-pleasing" singing are gone for good. I am in tears at the artistry and the longing to go back for just one year in the 50s or 60s at The Met or La Scala. It's over and all we have left are these treasures from a magnificent era. Thank you, Rachel, for the treats!!!!

(Quoting VIV1 far below) "Corelli said this specific performance in Parma was the best performance he had ever sung in his career" -- Not exactly right. He was referring specifically to this particular Jan '67 "Tosca" performance (distinguished from all other "Tosca"s he sang, not the entire body of all his performed operas. What he precisely said was "Tosca? This one is my best." He was commenting on the "recorded-live" product that reached the marketplace, and via his above statement was justifiably happy to promote and ensure the subsequent royalties which would accrue to him.

That's Attilio D’Orazi as Scarpia by the way and Virginia Goldoni as Floria. It's always the conductor's choice whether to hold things up or go right on with it as Morelli did here.
I saw Franco do this exact same thing at the Met in '73 with Cillario conducting. There was a reason I found out later. Franco and Cillario disagreed politically and had a big argument before the show. So Cillario was having the orchestra play louder than usual trying to drown him out (you've got to be kidding, this is Corelli we're talking about). Sure enough, Franco gave the "Vittoria!" all he had, just as you hear it here. The way I remember it, Cillario actually held things up for a bit while the audience (me included) went apeshit. Gobbi was Scarpia that night and he had to stand there and look disgusted until it was time to continue. Hee.

If you want to hear a ringing vittoria! , you must listen to Jussi Björling, this is more baryton like. Great voice by all means, but he don't have that ringing pop like Jussi!
