    Here is a boxing exercise that my boxing coach made me do everyday, which helps increase your punching power, sharpen up your footwork, and helps to land more punches. A lot of times, after stepping in and throwing the jab, the rear leg drags behind. This drill forces you to step on every straight punch, so that you're picking up your feet every time you throw the jab and the cross.

    I’ve been training these exercises for a while now. I really enjoy them. I have really been enjoying your channel too! It’s very well done.
    I’ve been training martial arts for over 40 years, and I decided to start training boxing to help me loosen up and be able move better. I also think it helps me stay in the game because I don’t get to spar like I used to. I’m thinking about joining a boxing gym. I love sparring!

    brilliant. the purpose of this drill is to teach your body the muscle memory of momentum and balance. over time you can increase speed and/or power without losing balance or getting tired.

    Like he said, don't do this in a fight. First do you need to learn the technique and train your muscle memory to move the right way when throwing a punch and when you've learned that and can do it flawlessly then learn how to fight more efficient. And that's how you get good at something faster not just by learning the most advanced things first, when you understand how it works you'll get better way faster at anything.

    time for my 2 cents... so this video is actually an exercise that consist of switching from southpaw to orthodox back and forth because the only time you step in with a jab is when you JAB (the basic way to throw 3 jabs at a time). For you to step with the other side where the right strong hand is (which is in the back), your stepping forward with your right foot for the right hand JAB. This boxing references im talking about... the left foot leads with a left jab while the right foot pivots counter clockwise for a right cross/up/hook/straight handed punch.... the left foot can pivot clockwise for the left handed hooks as well...
    your better off learning how to Left jab to a Right hook or L jab, R straight, L hook (#3 punch) or L gut (#5punch), and end with a R over hand hook or R hook (#4 punch)..
    learning how to jab with both hands is not a good idea, if situation happens and the opponent wants to trade shots with you, your right handed jab can be countered or traded with their left hook.. whats bad about this situation is their left hook will hurt more than your right jab and more likely to knock you out or out of balance that your left jab makes a lesser impact or total miss...
    unless your doing taekwando or karate, punching with both hands are equal traditionally..
    know what the purpose of a jab is, it helps lead your rear hand into a heavy strike... thats why theres 3 jabs straight in a row for the leading hand, no 3 jabs with a rear hand..

      joel roberts Although I may have an idea can you enlighten us on what type of martial art school you go?
      Because you have no clue of what real sparring is let me explain that full contact does not mean that you try to kill or knock someone out when sparring that is why people who train , normally use 14-16 oz gloves and wear head gear.
      Rarely people will go full blast and that is usually when they are preparing for a fight and their sparring partner must be at a similar level of skil and size.

    Hollysh*t me too!! I find it helpful to just do both sides, so if my opponent doesn't like (or isn't use to southpaw) just switch to southpaw. Learning both sides might be more work, but being able to go either way comes in handy.

    Why wouldn't you use this footwork while punching at a bag or opponent? It took me a while to figure out how to punch and move at the same time and I eventually figured out this footwork you're teaching on my own by carefully watching videos and experimenting. I actually find that not only does this footwork let me punch on the move, but it actually lets me land harder shots with less energy. By having the rear foot stepping on a right cross, I can even step right into a left roundhouse kick.

    I boxed two years in Marines and outside I sparred with pros for another year (never a pro fight) Keeping you body balanced constantly keep hitting a heavy bag until your arms drop like lead, using the energy from your legs when punching, keeping my wrist parallel with my for forearms (never bend them), using only the flat part of your fist (no knuckles) to make contact, and snapping your punches using the power from your upper back muscles as well. This all old school from the 60s. Maybe things have changed.

    This is sound training. The idea of matching the movement of the feet and hands is ancient. All internal kungfu (Taichi, Bagua and Xing-yi) have this in training. In Kungfu you can choose either foot to connect too not just same side and teaches to also should link the elbows and knees under this same principle. In this way every strike/kick elbow/shoulder will have full body power.

    Don't agree with the jab technique. A correct technical jab is also a pivot movement from the lead foot. It's more difficult, but the power difference is tremendous.

    • @sdkessler1032
      @sdkessler1032 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Theres many types of jabs. A pivot jab is just like a left cross. The mainly used one is the one without pivot because its fast. It's not meant to deal damage, just to distract and set up combos.

    • @wstage
      @wstage 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wow I totally forgot about this comment. I have changed my stance at this point. I primarily utilize a turning hip motion and very little lead foot pivot. But if I'm gonna drive more power or throw a long range hook which looks very similar to a technical jab (elbow angle) I will work that lead foot pivot. I've been following Fran Sands channel and strictly adhering to his technique. Training at gyms in America has caused me to trust the old school Brits when it comes to hands. American gyms need more technical emphasis for beginners.

All your tips work well, but this one I can't seem to figure out why you have to move your arm and legs to get that power and punching accuracy. I tired this for 2 minutes and I swear I know I'm moving much much more faster and I hit harder, it seems to give you rhythm in a way more speed, accuracy and hitting power but how ? How does this simple trick work sooo well?

    Shane please make a video on how to defend against a very aggressive attacker who its bigger than you and just rushes on you, every time this happens to me i just freeze, it would be very helpful, Thanks!!

    How come after all these years watching fights like boxing, ufc etc, playing games like Tekken, MortalKombat etc, I never realized anything about footwork lol. It's always there but at the same time it's always overlooked, at least by me, and I bet many people do too. I always expect punch punch and more punch.

    mhm, in a real fight yes, I definitely agree with you. but for practice I'd say they might be handy in that sense to ensure you practice various and rly every move your learned...
