  • We bought a used underground concrete storm shelter that we moved to our homestead and installed it behind our house. We did all the work with friends and family from loading it to moving it to digging the hole and installing it.

I hope you plan to beef up that door. Two hinges will not be strong enough. The gage of the metal should be beefed up with another layer or two to improve the impact rating. the interior locking mechanism is important so when you are in there the wind cannot pull it open. I would build some fold-down benches that can double as shelves for cold storage. Something like a simple bolt and nut together style. Install a battery lantern and add a tub for supplies like water and batteries and something for the kids. Paint the interior a nice like gray color so it is not so drab and dreary. It would be a very simple matter to run some conduit from the trailer into the interior for a light.

If you have water in the hole I hope you take the time to coat the exterior of it with a water sealant such as Dry Lock and set the shelter on a layer of gravel so it can drain. If not you will get water absorbed into the shell and it will get mouldy and damp and smell awful pretty quick.

Of course our shelter is in a dirt bank and the door faces downhill but I made the mistake of putting in two 25' runs of 4" corrugated pipe and filled in some of the entrance. Now no water flows out of the corrugated pipe so I suppose I'll have to find someone to dig all that back up an remove it. It mainly floods after we have had a lot of rainfall.
