    In this video I am moving an exterior door to make way for a small laundry room. I'm only moving it about a foot and a half but it's the same process as moving it any distance. This method can also be used to add or remove a door. Along with moving the door, I am eliminating a window from the house. Overall it is a pretty involved project, but one that is pretty simple if looked at for it's individual steps. To make the job even more simple you could opt to discard the existing door and use a new, pre-hung unit. Be sure to check my channel for other videos that I've posted and videos to come. You can also check out my other TH-cam channels, “The Homestead Craftsman” and “Square Inch”, the links are above. And for those who just can't get enough, here's the link to my Facebook- www.facebook.c...

    I bought my first house about 4 years ago in bad really bad shape you could see from one side of the house to the other from the front door was a lot of work by myself but definitely worth it now rent it out. I did exactly what you did here with one of the exterior side doors only difference is my house has 2 floors so I had to double brace for safety. Great jobs I really enjoy all your videos and definitely looking forward to the upcoming renovations on your newly acquired home. Congrats and good luck.

      peggyt1243 The house isn't that bad, the price difference of fixing this house and building a new one would be massive. I could buy and fix at least 4 or 5 of these houses for the amount.

    What type of permit did you have to get for your remodel? And was there any engineering required to do any of the work you are doing? I ask because when I get to the point I am ready to remodel parts of my house, I want to make sure I am doing thing the right way instead of having to rip everything out because I did something wrong. I am sure it is different in every state, but where do you get your info for building codes?

    • @homemadehome5575
      @homemadehome5575  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheOomgosh It's refered to as a renovation permit with me as the owner and contractor. I just drew a sketch of what I was doing. In certain cases you might have to have an engineer but I didn't for any of my stuff. The engineering would come into play with large unsupported spans and load bearing situations. The easiest thing to do if you are unsure of what you are doing is call your local inspectors office, where you got the permit and talk to the person in charge. For the most part I just have a good idea of what to do from experience. And if I do something wrong, I'll just change it. Inspections are done in several phases so most of the time it's not a huge deal to change something.

    You're very knowledgeable on how to do all that stuff! Where did you learn your skill set? Please pardon me if this question has already be asked and answered. I'm new to your channel (I subbed today :-)

    • @homemadehome5575
      @homemadehome5575  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      By just doing it and no worrying about knowing how to be honest. I've had people show me some stuff, but most of it's simple......just tear something out and replace it. Look at other framing and do the same thing or pictures, etc.

    • @femineity
      @femineity 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow...I guess it takes trusting your instincts, being brave and just doing it, huh! I hope I'm one day blessed to be paired with a smart, brave and willing partner (husband) like you to work on home improvement projects with! I use to watch my grandfather as a kid, do projects around the house. It always fascinated me to see him delve into projects and complete them successfully! I'm enjoying your channel a great deal. Thanks for responding and best of luck to you in all your future endeavors!

    oh man.. I wish I found your videos before I had to take a door that had been used on one garage and reused on a current garage.. I'm embarrassed to say my door hanging skill are so sub par, and I had to settle on door just barely closing with jams that do not look level.

  • @AndrewBrowner
    @AndrewBrowner 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    good stuff, i use that sawzall to the nails trick daily if you havent already try the carbide demo blades, milwuakee and diablo both make good ones, i noticed youre using ridgid cordless tools in this video but in your new ones you have milwuakee, what happened there? would like to see a video on what tools you use and your experiences with what ones were great purchases and what ones were a mistake

    • @homemadehome5575
      @homemadehome5575  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I liked the rigid drill and driver.....I just have a Milwaukee set now, which beats the socks off any brand I've ever used, the drill will break your wrist it's so powerful and the impact driver can't be stopped......same for the batteries.

    • @AndrewBrowner
      @AndrewBrowner 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      so did the rigid wear out and fail or did they get stolen/sold
      if they failed what was the part/failure mode

    • @homemadehome5575
      @homemadehome5575  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Barely anything. I reused the door and barely paid anything to have the siding milled. $50 - $100 and a couple days.
