Reeves Callaway was obsessed with building the fastest cars in the world that were totally street-able (and reliable as possible) at the same time. Hopefully you agree with me on how under-appreciated these old Callaway cars are, and if you have time after this video, check out my new channel, where I NAME AND SHAME the most UNRELIABLE cars of 2024: th-cam.com/video/iMD2S_klKHA/w-d-xo.html

When Reeves Callaway was much younger, I lived about mile away from one of his early shops, in Deerfield Mass, I was privileged to sweep his shop floors, and empty trash cans,
He was an early mentor and hero to me.
And I hung out and received a first class intro to the automotive world.
Inspired me to attend college and receive a degree in mechanical engineering, which has served me well for over fifty years in the automotive world.
    Ran into Reeves at
Lime Rock many years later,we reminisced for a bit,Still one of my heroes.

Callaway Tuning and Callaway Golf are related. The golf company belongs to the father and came well after the tuning company was established. It’s been a long time since I heard the story but supposedly the father asked if the machine shop could mill him a metal driver out of aluminum and from there the Big Bertha Driver was born. Drivers were still made out of wood at that time so it was a revolutionary idea.

Not at all accurate, aside from the relation. Ely Callaway was fairly wealthy and bought half of Hickory Sticks. Eventually Ely bought out the other half and renamed the golf club company to Callaway. Ely hired out a club designer that came up with the Big Bertha, made of steel, not aluminum. Also, metal woods were already a thing. Callaway really revolutionized it with the "oversized" metal wood.

A Camaro like this is not only rare, but a great performance car. For the cost of this Camaro you can hardly find any decent performance car. I have seen stock Cobra Mustangs of this era go for 30K. I had that issue of R&T. This is awesome. My mom had a 1995 red RS that was nothing like this performance-wise, but I feel like it at least had a similar vibe. The RS also had a pretty premium interior, even for a Camaro. And that was a nice place to sit in 1995.

Great video, and an excellent tribute to Reeves Callaway. Now that he's passed, I predict those twin turbo vettes will begin to command a premium, once people our age talk them up into relevance again. My dream Callaway is a speedster! No top, Sledgehammer style and exotic livery, with wild colours over supple, rich leather. I'm sure those are tucked away by discerning collectors. I'd love the bright green one over bright blue original show car, or dark blue over saddle.

awesome car man, i had an abs inop light randomly come on on my 94 trans am to find out that the rear 3rd brake light bulb was working intermittently. once i replaced the bulbs the abs inop light stayed off. such a weird issue, had to google it lol. that seems to be a common issue for this, try replacing the bulbs and they have to be factory style not LED. might work for you. something with the resistance of that 3rd brake light tied into abs

This was my favorite car when I was younger, and this was my favorite generation of this car. The styling of this particular specimen hasn't really aged well, but there will always be a very, very soft spot in my heart for fourth-gen Camaros. Star Trek: The Next Generation was all the rage in the early-/mid-90's, and this car epitomized the styling revolution away from the angular slopes and simple curves of the Coutachs, and Testarossas, but hadn't quite yet transitioned to the melted-candle/jelly-bean style of the late 90's like the (like the '96 Taurus). The first-gen Ford Probe was another of this breed, sporting the same speeding-bullet styling with horizontal laser-line body accents and an enormous, helipad-sized rear windshield.

The early-90's pre-refresh WS6's were actually sexy. And the post-refresh "Catfish" Camaros weren't all that great looking either... could have been mistaken for a late 90's Malibu or *blech* a NUMMI Corolla.

Fun fact having grown up near them i use to use their unofficial test track, it was called the hammonasset connector. It connected i-95 to a state park, Up until the early 2000s absolutely nothing and no one was on the road after the park closed, it’s about maybe 3 miles long and pretty much perfectly straight and smooth, And no cross roads during that length until you cross rt 1 into the park gate.
You would do a test run to make sure no cops are on the road, do a u turn and drive till the interstate again and do a final u turn before you gun it. A truly fast car had the space to hit 200 in relatively safety.
Then in the l 2000s the town decided to put the police station and town hall there.
