Hornady LnL AP - Yet Another Priming Fix 2

  • I cover cleaning and fixing a couple factory 'defects' with the Hornady Lock-n-Load AP priming system.
    It's generally a high quality product, but there are a few weak spots and problem areas. Knowing about these issues will keep the press performing well.

    Watching these vids makes me realize how fortunate I am that I took mine out of the box years ago, put it together, and it worked fine. Disassembled it when I moved...kept it in storage for a year, then re assembled, and it worked fine..as it does today. Glad they're are vids like this out there though in case something happens. 👍

    Another tipped that worked wonders for me, and I saw it on youtube (I can't remember the name of the guy who did it, or I'd give him credit)..... take a dremel to the subplate where the detent holes are and make very light channels going into and out of the detent. VERY SMALL Channels. Just something the balls on the shell plate can roll into and out of easier. What difference is smoothness. It also helps the cases ride smoother in the shell plate and no "jumps", or powder flying out of the cases. Worked wonders for me.

    Another way to break the edge of the primer shuttle would be to use a cratex polishing point on your dremel tool. Cratex bullet points are available in fine, medium and coarse abrasive from Brownells.

    Can you tell me more about your audible alarm that you are using that contacts your primer wheel and how I can fabricate one?

    I don't realize why you're having all these issues I have had one of these presses for probably 8 years loaded thousands of rounds have not once cleaned out the primer tube and I have not had any of these issues.

    Recently and very suddenly my L&L progressive press stopped seating the primers. It loads the primers but it won't seat them. I have looked it over and can't see anything obviously wrong. Any ideas? Thanks Joe

    I picked up one of these earlier this year and the only priming issue I have had so far is the little black plastic piece that sits on top that holds the primer feed tube centered in the outer tube. Every few rounds the inner tube would work its way up the plastic centering piece at the top and the primers would jam. I took that black plastic piece off and it has fed well since then.

      Interesting. There are two black plastic pieces that come with the AP, as far as I know - one for large primer tube and one for small primer tubes. Mixing those up might cause a problem, but even if you did mix them up, why the inner tube could 'climb', I don't know. That's really odd. I'll take a look at mine and see if I can figure that one out!

    • @silentbob267
      @silentbob267 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am pretty sure mine only came with the one but I could be wrong. Maybe that is what the problem was, although that still wouldn't explain why it climbs. It seems to be loading fine without it though so I'm not really in any hurry to mess with it

    Hi I need some help i have the progressive press and I started to install the primers into 223 case and I’m having a lot of primers getting stuck and not going in all the way and then the case is stuck and I have to force it out I’ve checked to see if I have all the correct parts installed and I do I can’t find any videos about the problem I’m having any info would be great thanks

  • @SgtDevilCow

    Just curious, what do you use to lube the parts? I have a grease gun for the grease points, but the shell plate, the primer slide, etc, do you use anything there? I saw one person recommend just a touch of white lithium, someone else said only dry lube, and another said no lube what soever. I've broken nearly 3 index prawls and now have broken the index wheel it's self because of primers not seating properly and causing the whole machine to lock up like a brick. I'll try these steps, but if you could let me know about the lube situation I'd appreciate it! Thanks for the informative video!

    one other thing I found stopped my problems was on the primer slide bar to slightly ramp the bottom front. mine would hang up on the primer punch so 45 the bottom of the front stops it cold

    • @obsyan

      Daniel I’ve had similar issues and believe I know what you’re saying to do. Do you have a picture or video detailing the 45 you did?

    • @danielf7055
      @danielf7055 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@obsyan Noni didn't take. a picture the bottom side of the front of primer slider what I did was to take a little bit off and slide it by hand to see if it catches if it does take a little bit more off trial and error seems to work you just need to ramp its it will slide over primer pin

      jack if you look under the turret you will see a spring this is the cause of the primer feed with the primer slide at rest you can see the primer punch sticking up and it stops the slide this means the spring has settled there is 2 ways to deal with it one is put shim under the spring until the primer punch sits level or grind a 45 under the primer slider so it clears the punch this hornadays lnl primer problem in a nut shell hope it helps you I sent you some picture they ebay a few minutes ago

    • @danielf7055
      @danielf7055 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      jack you can take a thin stainless flat washer with a hole the size of the brass dump tube and slice out a opening so you can slide it under the spring this will fix it also with out grinding your choice see what works best for you Dan

    wouldnt using a 22 cal cleaning rod be quicker and easier?

    • @DesertDogExploring
      @DesertDogExploring  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lance Collins It sure would, if the rod and patch would both fit. That's the first issue. The other issue is the finish on the tube is poor, and you would quickly ruin a good cleaning rod. So the wire was handy, easier to work with, and disposable.
      A .17 cleaning rod would be ideal, but I don't have one. Thanks for the feedback, too!! 😄

    Hello, my deal is after I resize and now to the priming station, some cases take it really easy but some you have to really work the handle hard to get it to prom the case. Is this primer pockets not cleaned enough or something to do with the actual press I’ve tried everything you showed here on your video

  • @marklamasky6304
    @marklamasky6304 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Use a at-15 gas tube pipe cleaner. They are very long and should work very nice. You can buy them and I’m sure will last you a lifetime

    Will this fix the problems with primers being improperly set? - Mine jams them in the case at an angle sometimes, its a real pain in the butt. I adjusted the pawl but to no avail, i hope this fixes it! Thanks for the video!

    • @jimmybare3026
      @jimmybare3026 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Facing the press ,your left pawl is out of adjustment. Adjust it until your primer plunger is centered where the case sets in the shell plate should fix it.

    • @samuelcoronel7725
      @samuelcoronel7725 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jimmybare3026 Yep! That fixed it for the most part, the 2nd part was that the primer pockets needed to be slightly trimmed.
